Creative Thinking Strategies



Introduction

Creative Thinking Strategies are tools that help you look at a question in more than one way, make many possible ideas, and improve an idea after testing it. Creativity is not only for art. You can use it in English, Science, Mathematics, Art, Technology, and everyday problem solving.

In this aiMOOC, you will practise two important kinds of thinking. Divergent thinking means opening up and making many different possibilities. Convergent thinking means narrowing down, comparing possibilities, and choosing what seems most useful for your goal. Good creative work often moves back and forth between these two kinds of thinking.

By the end of the course, you should be able to generate several ideas, organize them, change them with creative prompts, choose ideas for a reason, build a simple test version, and explain how feedback helped you improve your work.


What Creative Thinking Looks Like

Creative thinking begins with curiosity. Instead of stopping at the first answer, you ask questions such as "What else could work?", "What could I change?", and "What would happen if I tried the opposite?" You also notice details, connect ideas, listen to other viewpoints, and test your ideas.

A creative idea does not have to be completely new to the whole world. It can be new to you, new for your class, or a fresh combination of things you already know. What matters is that you use imagination for a purpose.


A Helpful Thinking Cycle

You can use this simple cycle for many school projects:

  1. Questioning: Understand the challenge and ask open questions.
  2. Ideation: Produce many possibilities before choosing.
  3. Evaluation: Compare ideas with clear criteria.
  4. Prototyping: Make a quick version that can be tested.
  5. Feedback: Learn what works and what needs change.
  6. Iteration: Improve the idea and try again.

This cycle is not a straight road. You can return to an earlier step whenever you learn something new.


Strategy 1: Ask Open Questions

A narrow question may have only one short answer. An open question invites several possible answers. One useful starter is How might we...? For example, instead of asking "Can we make the classroom quieter?", ask "How might we make quiet work time easier for everyone?"

Try changing a complaint into a challenge. "Our reading corner is boring" can become "How might we make the reading corner a place students want to use?" A good creative question gives you a clear goal but leaves room for many answers.


Question Storm

In a question storm, you create questions before solutions. For two minutes, write as many questions as you can about a challenge. Do not answer them yet. Then circle the questions that could lead to interesting ideas.

Useful starters include "What if...?", "Why...?", "How might we...?", "Who else...?", and "What could we change?"


Strategy 2: Brainstorm and Brainwrite

Brainstorming means generating many ideas around a challenge. During the idea-making stage, avoid judging ideas too quickly. One unusual idea can lead to a useful one. After the brainstorm, you can switch to convergent thinking and decide which ideas fit your goal.

A classroom brainstorm works best when everyone gets a chance to contribute, people build on one another's ideas, and the group saves judging for later. You can use sticky notes, a shared board, or a large sheet of paper.

Brainwriting is a quieter version. Each person writes ideas first, then shares them with the group. This can help everyone contribute, including students who prefer time to think before speaking.


Strategy 3: Use a Mind Map

A Mind map starts with one main topic in the center. Branches spread out to related words, questions, pictures, examples, or possible solutions. A mind map helps you see connections that may be harder to notice in a simple list.

To make one, write your challenge in the center. Add big branches for main ideas. Add smaller branches for details. Use short words, symbols, or small sketches. When two branches seem connected, draw a line between them.

A mind map can be made on paper or with digital tools. The goal is not to make it beautiful. The goal is to make your thinking visible.


Strategy 4: SCAMPER

SCAMPER is a set of prompts that helps you change an existing object, idea, story, or solution. The letters stand for Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, and Reverse.

Imagine you want to improve a school backpack. You might substitute a heavy material for a lighter one, combine the backpack with a fold-out seat, adapt a pocket from a sports bag, modify the strap shape, put a side pocket to another use, eliminate an unnecessary zipper, or reverse the way the main flap opens.

You do not need to use all seven prompts every time. Choose the prompts that make you see the challenge differently.


Strategy 5: Make Forced Connections

Sometimes two ideas that seem unrelated can create a new direction. Pick a random object, animal, place, or word and ask, "What can this teach me about my challenge?"

Suppose your challenge is to design a better school library sign. Your random word is "bee." You might think about a hive, clear pathways, bright warning colors, or the way bees guide one another. You do not copy the bee. You use the connection as a spark for new ideas.


Strategy 6: Change Perspective

Your first idea often comes from your own point of view. Creative thinkers deliberately look again. Ask how the problem might seem to a younger student, a teacher, a visitor, a person with a temporary injury, or someone using the space for the first time.

Changing perspective can reveal needs you did not notice at first. It also reminds you that a solution that works well for one person may not work well for everyone.


Strategy 7: Try the Opposite

If you feel stuck, state the usual rule and imagine the opposite. If the usual rule is "A poster must be read from top to bottom," ask, "What if the reader could start anywhere?" If a game is usually competitive, ask, "What if everyone had to win together?"

The opposite does not have to become your final answer. Its job is to shake loose new possibilities.


Strategy 8: Sketch, Prototype, and Test

An idea becomes easier to discuss when you make it visible. A sketch is a quick drawing. A prototype is a simple test version. It might be a paper model, a storyboard, a sample paragraph, a cardboard structure, or a short role-play.

A prototype is not meant to be perfect. It helps you find out what works. Ask testers what was clear, confusing, useful, or difficult. Then improve the idea. This repeated process is called iteration.


Strategy 9: Set a Useful Constraint

A constraint is a limit or rule. A useful limit can sometimes make a challenge easier to start because it gives your imagination a clear space to work in. For example, "Invent any game" is very broad, but "Invent a game that uses only paper, can be learned in two minutes, and works for four players" gives you a focused challenge.

Try adding one or two fair constraints, such as a time limit, a small set of materials, a size limit, or a rule about who the solution must help. The goal is not to make the task impossible. The goal is to create a helpful starting point.


Divergent and Convergent Thinking Together

Divergent and convergent thinking work as a team. Imagine that your class wants to reduce wasted paper. First, use divergent thinking to generate many ideas without choosing too soon. Next, use convergent thinking to compare the ideas.

You might judge ideas by questions such as: Does it solve the problem? Is it safe? Can our class actually do it? Does it help enough people? What materials would it need?


Build Creative Habits

Creative thinking improves with practice. Keep an idea notebook. Notice interesting designs. Read different kinds of texts. Ask people how they solve everyday problems. Make small experiments. Give yourself time to think, and remember that a first draft is allowed to be unfinished.

When you work with others, listen for ideas you can build on. You can disagree respectfully, ask for reasons, and suggest improvements. A good creative team makes room for different voices.

  4. Creative solution report: Write a short report that shows your question, divergent ideas, selection criteria, prototype, feedback, and the changes you would make next.
