Introduction
Clean water and safe sanitation help people stay healthy, learn, work, and care for their communities. In this aiMOOC, you will explore where drinking water comes from, how water can become polluted, how water is treated, why toilets and handwashing matter, and how everyone can help protect water.
The United Nations includes these ideas in Sustainable Development Goal 6, often called SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Its goal is to improve access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene and to manage water resources responsibly.

As you learn, remember an important safety rule: water that looks clear is not always safe to drink. Never drink water from an experiment, stream, puddle, tank, or unknown source unless a responsible adult and local guidance say it is safe.
Water Is Essential
Your body needs water every day. People also need water for cooking, washing, farming, hospitals, schools, factories, and many other activities. Plants and animals depend on freshwater too.
Only part of Earth's water is freshwater, and not all freshwater is easy for people to reach or safe to use. That is why protecting rivers, lakes, wetlands, groundwater, and water systems matters.
The Water Cycle
Water is always moving through the water cycle. The Sun provides energy that helps liquid water change into water vapour through evaporation. Plants release water vapour through transpiration. Higher in the atmosphere, water vapour cools and forms tiny droplets in condensation. Water returns to the ground as precipitation, such as rain or snow. Some water flows across land as runoff, while some soaks into the ground and can become groundwater.
The water cycle moves water around Earth, but it does not automatically make every water source safe for people. Pollution can enter water at many points.
Safe Drinking Water
Safe drinking water is water that is suitable for drinking and does not expose people to harmful levels of germs or chemicals. Water can contain visible dirt, but it can also contain things you cannot easily see, such as tiny germs or dissolved chemicals.
A safe water system usually includes several connected steps: protecting the water source, collecting or pumping water, treating it when needed, storing it safely, and delivering it through clean pipes, taps, tanks, or other systems.
How Water Is Treated
Water treatment depends on the water source and local system. A drinking-water treatment plant may use several steps. Larger particles can be gathered together and allowed to settle. Water may then pass through filters made from materials such as sand, gravel, or other media. A disinfection step can reduce harmful germs before treated water is stored and sent to users.


Filtration is not the same as complete purification. A classroom sand-and-gravel filter can show how particles may be removed, but the filtered water must not be tasted or drunk. Making water safe may require additional treatment and careful testing.
Protecting Water Sources
It is often easier and safer to prevent pollution than to remove it later. Communities can protect water by keeping rubbish, fuel, paint, oil, medicines, sewage, animal waste, and harmful chemicals away from drains, rivers, lakes, wells, and groundwater.
Plants and soil can also help slow rainwater and reduce erosion. Healthy wetlands can store water, trap some sediments, and provide habitats for wildlife.

Sanitation
Sanitation means safely managing human waste and wastewater so that people and the environment are protected. Good sanitation includes toilets, safe waste collection, drainage, treatment, maintenance, and safe disposal or reuse where appropriate.
A toilet is only one part of a sanitation system. Waste must also be kept away from hands, food, drinking water, homes, and places where children play.
Safe and Inclusive Toilets
School toilets should be clean, private, usable, and safe. They should have nearby handwashing facilities with water and soap. Good design also considers people with disabilities. Features such as ramps, handrails, suitable door widths, and enough space can make facilities easier for more people to use independently.

Sanitation is also connected with dignity and education. When students have safe, private, and usable facilities at school, it is easier to take part in school life comfortably.
Hygiene and Handwashing
Hygiene means habits and conditions that help people stay clean and healthy. Handwashing with soap and water is especially important after using the toilet, before preparing or eating food, and when hands are visibly dirty.
Soap helps loosen dirt, oils, and germs from the skin so they can be rinsed away with water. Careful handwashing includes rubbing the palms, backs of hands, between fingers, thumbs, fingertips, and wrists.

A tippy tap is a simple handwashing device that can release a small amount of water when a container is tipped. It shows that useful hygiene solutions can be designed for places where a normal sink or tap is not available.
Water Pollution
Water pollution happens when harmful substances or too much waste enter water. Pollution can come from many places. Examples include litter, untreated sewage, leaking oil, farm chemicals, industrial waste, and soil washed from bare ground.
Pollution can harm people, animals, plants, and entire ecosystems. It can also make water more difficult and expensive to treat.
A useful way to think about pollution is to ask three questions: Where did it come from? How did it reach the water? What action could prevent it?
Wastewater
Wastewater is water that has already been used. Water from toilets, sinks, showers, kitchens, schools, farms, and some workplaces may become wastewater. Before wastewater returns to the environment, it often needs treatment to remove solids, reduce harmful germs, and lower the amount of pollutants.
Wastewater treatment and drinking-water treatment are different processes, even though both protect health and water quality.
Saving Water and Using It Wisely
Water conservation means using water carefully and avoiding unnecessary waste. You can help by turning off taps when they are not needed, reporting leaks, using only the water you need, and reusing water safely when local rules allow it.
Saving water does not mean using too little water for drinking or hygiene. Health and cleanliness still come first. The aim is to reduce waste while meeting real needs.
Climate, rainfall, drought, population, pipes, pumps, treatment systems, and pollution can all affect how much safe water is available in a place. Because communities face different conditions, there is no single solution that works everywhere.
Fair Access to Water and Sanitation
Clean water and sanitation are not only science topics. They are also connected to fairness, public health, education, engineering, geography, and community planning.
Some people must travel farther for water, use less reliable services, or face barriers because facilities are not accessible. Good solutions listen to the people who will use them and consider children, older people, people with disabilities, and different local needs.
What Communities Can Do
Communities can improve water and sanitation by protecting water sources, repairing pipes, building and maintaining safe toilets, treating drinking water and wastewater, supporting handwashing, testing water quality, planning for droughts and floods, and teaching safe hygiene practices.
Engineers, health workers, teachers, scientists, plumbers, local leaders, families, and students can all contribute. You do not need to solve every problem yourself. Learning how systems work and taking responsible action are important first steps.
