Introduction

Imagine standing outside a stone castle. A deep ditch or moat separates you from the walls. Towers rise above you, guards watch the gate, and the strongest entrance may have thick doors, a portcullis, and a drawbridge. Inside, people cook, repair equipment, care for horses, store food, work, sleep, plan, and prepare for danger.

This aiMOOC explores castles, knights, and warfare in medieval Europe, with special attention to the period from about 1000 to 1500. The Middle Ages lasted for many centuries, so there was no single type of castle, knight, army, or battle. Designs and tactics changed over time and from place to place.

You will investigate three big questions: Why were castles built? How did knights train and fight? How did attackers and defenders try to outthink each other? You will also learn how historians use buildings, objects, pictures, and written records as evidence.

War was dangerous and destructive for soldiers and civilians. This course does not treat warfare as a game. Instead, it studies how people organized defense, used technology, solved problems, and made choices in difficult situations.

Learning Goals

By the end of this course, you should be able to explain why medieval castles were built, identify major parts of a castle, describe how castle design changed, compare mail and plate armor, explain the roles of knights and other soldiers, describe several siege methods, and use historical evidence to support a conclusion.

You should also be able to connect history with engineering, physics, geography, art, and English by reading sources, using specialist vocabulary, comparing evidence, and explaining cause and effect.


Castles: Homes, Fortresses, and Symbols of Power


Why Build a Castle?

A medieval castle was usually more than a military building. It could protect a lord, family, soldiers, servants, stored goods, and important records. It could also help control a road, river crossing, port, town, or border. A large castle showed that its owner had wealth, authority, and access to workers and materials.

Location mattered. A hilltop could give defenders a wide view. A river could supply water, carry goods, and create a natural barrier. A castle near a road or bridge could help control movement. Builders therefore had to think like geographers as well as engineers.

Not every medieval fortified site looked like a storybook castle with a moat and four round towers. Some were wooden, some were stone, some were built on hills, and others stood on flatter ground. Their shapes depended on the landscape, date, money, purpose, and local building traditions.


From Earth and Timber to Stone

In parts of western Europe, especially during the 10th and 11th centuries, many castles used earthworks and timber. A well-known form was the motte-and-bailey castle. The motte was a raised mound, often carrying a tower, while the bailey was an enclosed courtyard protected by a ditch and fence or wall.

After the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, many motte-and-bailey castles were built as new rulers tried to secure important places. Timber could be used relatively quickly, but it could decay or burn. Over time, many important castles gained stone towers and stone curtain walls.

A large stone tower is often called a keep or great tower. It could provide secure rooms, storage, impressive halls, and a strong point inside the castle. Later castle design often placed more defensive strength around the outer walls, towers, and gatehouses instead of depending mainly on one central keep.

The Castle's Defensive System

Castle defense worked best as a system. One wall or one tower was rarely enough. Attackers might have to cross open ground, descend into a ditch, climb or cross an obstacle, approach a gate under observation, break through an entrance, and then face more defenders inside.

Important features included a curtain wall, which enclosed the castle; towers, which gave defenders height and wider views; battlements, which provided protected positions along wall tops; and arrow loops or other openings that allowed defenders to shoot while exposing less of themselves.

A moat was a ditch around part or all of a castle. It did not always contain water. A dry moat could still make it harder to move siege machines close to the wall or to dig directly beneath it.

The gatehouse needed special attention because an entrance is also a weak point. Strong gatehouses could use thick doors, narrow passages, towers, a portcullis, and sometimes a drawbridge. Some castles also used a barbican, an extra fortified structure protecting the approach to a gate.

The main gatehouse at Harlech Castle shows how an entrance could become one of the most strongly protected parts of a fortress.

Caerphilly Castle in Wales is famous for its large-scale defenses. Its walls, towers, gates, and water defenses show how castle builders could create several layers of protection.


Concentric Castles and Layers of Defense

A concentric castle uses more than one defensive ring, often with an inner wall protected by an outer wall. An attacker who passed one obstacle could still face another. Towers and walls were arranged so defenders could cover important approaches.

This idea shows an important lesson in engineering: defense is not just about making one object stronger. It is also about arranging several parts so that they support one another.

When you study a castle, ask: Where would an attacker have to go? Where could defenders watch from? Which route is safest? Which route is most dangerous? A castle plan is a puzzle about movement, distance, height, and visibility.


Life Inside the Walls

Castles were also places where people lived and worked. A major castle might contain a great hall, kitchen, chapel, private rooms, workshops, storerooms, stables, a well or cistern, and spaces for guards and servants. Food, fuel, tools, cloth, weapons, and building materials had to be brought in, stored, and managed.

The great hall could be used for meals, meetings, ceremonies, decisions, and receiving visitors. The castle household might include nobles, soldiers, cooks, servants, clerks, craftspeople, messengers, and other workers. A castle was therefore part fortress, part home, part workplace, and part center of government.

Water and food were especially important during a siege. A strong wall was not very useful if the people inside ran out of supplies. This is why wells, storage, and access routes mattered as much as stonework.


Knights: Training, Armor, Horses, and Status


Who Was a Knight?

A medieval knight was a warrior of high social status, usually trained to fight on horseback and on foot. Knights were only one part of medieval armies. Many soldiers were not knights at all.

The familiar story of a boy becoming a page, then a squire, and finally a knight can be a useful model, but real training did not follow exactly the same steps everywhere. Young nobles and future warriors could learn riding, weapons practice, hunting, manners, household duties, and military skills in noble households.

A squire could assist an experienced warrior, care for equipment and horses, and train for combat. Some squires later became knights, but knighthood depended on family, money, service, opportunity, and local custom.

Horses, armor, weapons, servants, and travel were expensive. This helped make knighthood a special social and military role rather than something every soldier could become.


Armor: Protection That Changed Over Time

Early and high-medieval warriors often depended heavily on mail, made from many linked metal rings. Mail is flexible and can protect well against cutting blows, especially when worn with padded clothing. However, it does not make the wearer invulnerable.

During the later Middle Ages, wealthy warriors increasingly added shaped metal plates to protect more of the body. By the 15th century, a complete harness of articulated plate armor could cover a knight from head to foot while still allowing movement at the joints.

Plate armor looks heavy, but well-made armor spread its weight across the body. A trained wearer could walk, fight, mount a horse, and get up from the ground. The popular idea that every armored knight had to be lifted onto a horse by a crane is a myth.

Weapons and Fighting Skills

Knights could use several weapons. The lance was strongly connected with mounted combat. The sword was useful in many situations and also became an important symbol of knightly status. Other weapons included maces, axes, daggers, and pole weapons.

A weapon was not automatically better just because it was larger. Reach, balance, protection, terrain, formation, and the skill of the user all mattered.

Crossbows were used by many kinds of soldiers. They could deliver powerful shots and were important in both field battles and sieges.

Study the shape of this medieval crossbow. Compare it with a longbow. The two weapons store and release energy in different ways, and each has different strengths and training demands.


Horses and Mounted Warfare

A knight's horse had to be trained to respond in noisy, crowded, dangerous situations. Mounted warriors could move quickly, threaten exposed troops, pursue opponents, and deliver force in a charge.

However, cavalry was not unbeatable. Mud, steep slopes, ditches, walls, stakes, disciplined infantry, missile fire, and crowded ground could reduce the advantage of horses. Successful commanders had to match tactics to terrain.

This is an important historical lesson: technology works inside a situation. A strong horse, sharp sword, or thick wall only helps when people use it effectively.


Heraldry, Tournaments, and Chivalry

Heraldry developed as a system of recognizable symbols, colors, and designs used on shields, banners, clothing, seals, and other objects. Heraldic designs could identify individuals and families and could show status or connection.

These historical drawings show shields connected with English knights and barons. Compare their patterns. Which are easy to recognize from a distance?

Tournaments allowed warriors to practise skills, compete, display status, and build reputations. Jousting, in which two mounted riders charged with lances, became one famous tournament event. Tournament rules and equipment changed over time.

The English Heritage video shows modern historical interpreters explaining jousting skills. Remember that a reenactment is a modern reconstruction, not a medieval source. It is useful when it is compared with surviving objects, buildings, pictures, and written evidence.

Chivalry was an ideal connected with knightly behavior, courage, loyalty, reputation, religion, and courtly conduct. Medieval writers did not all define it in the same way, and real people did not always live up to the ideal. Historians therefore separate what people said should happen from what evidence shows actually happened.


Warfare: Armies, Battles, and Sieges


An Army Was More Than Knights

Medieval armies could include knights and other men-at-arms, infantry with spears or pole weapons, archers, crossbowmen, engineers, miners, laborers, messengers, cooks, wagon drivers, and others who kept the army moving.

This modern reenactment shows infantry carrying long pole weapons. Reenactments can help you imagine scale and movement, but they should not be treated as direct proof of exactly how every medieval battle looked.

Food, water, transport, replacement equipment, and communication were essential. This is called logistics. An army that could not feed people and animals or move supplies could fail even before a major battle.


Battlefield Choices

Commanders had to think about terrain, weather, visibility, numbers, morale, formation, timing, and supplies. A hill could help defenders. Mud could slow horses. A narrow bridge could limit movement. Forests or hedges could break up formations.

Infantry might stand close together for protection. Archers and crossbowmen could weaken or disrupt enemies from a distance. Mounted troops could move quickly or attack at a chosen moment. Different troops worked best when their roles supported one another.

This section of the Bayeux Tapestry shows Norman knights and archers at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It is valuable evidence, but it is also an artwork created for a particular audience. Historians ask who made a source, when it was made, what it shows, what it leaves out, and why.


What Is a Siege?

A siege happens when an attacking force surrounds or closely attacks a fortified place and tries to force its defenders to surrender. Sieges could last days, weeks, months, or longer.

Attackers had several choices. They might block roads and supplies, bombard walls, use ladders, attack a gate, dig tunnels beneath defenses, build siege towers, or try to break masonry with machines. They could also negotiate.

Defenders could repair damage, strengthen weak points, fire from walls and towers, make sudden attacks called sorties, protect water and food supplies, and wait for a relieving army.

Many sieges were battles of patience and supply. A castle could have excellent walls and still surrender if food, water, hope of relief, or the ability to continue resistance disappeared.


Siege Engines and Engineering

A trebuchet is a type of stone-throwing siege engine. The counterweight trebuchet uses a heavy falling weight to swing a long arm. The motion transfers energy to a sling, which releases a projectile.

This reconstruction at Château des Baux in France helps you see the long throwing arm, frame, sling, and counterweight system.

The trebuchet connects history with physics. Important ideas include potential energy, gravity, levers, rotation, projectile motion, and energy transfer. Changing the arm length, counterweight, sling, or release point can change the result.

A trebuchet was not a magic wall-destroyer. Building, moving, aiming, supplying, and operating large machines required materials, skilled labor, time, and space. Defenders might repair damage or attack the machine.

This PBS NOVA program investigates medieval siege engineering. Focus on the problem-solving process: builders must test materials, measurements, balance, and timing rather than simply copy a drawing.


Mining, Rams, Towers, and Blockades

Mining meant digging beneath or into a wall or tower so part of the structure could collapse. Defenders might hear the digging and try to create counter-mines.

A battering ram concentrated repeated force against a gate or wall. A siege tower could provide a protected raised platform for attackers, but it needed suitable ground and was difficult to move. Ladders were simpler but exposed attackers.

A blockade could be less dramatic but very effective. If attackers controlled roads, rivers, fields, or ports, defenders might lose access to food, reinforcements, and information.

These methods show why warfare depended on engineering and logistics as much as bravery.


Gunpowder Changes the Castle Story

Gunpowder weapons gradually became more important in Europe during the later Middle Ages. Cannon could damage tall stone walls in ways earlier weapons could not.

This did not make every castle useless at once. Owners strengthened some defenses, changed openings, thickened walls, or adapted old buildings. Over time, new fortifications often became lower and thicker and used shapes designed to resist artillery fire.

The history of castles is therefore a story of challenge and response: stronger walls encouraged new attack methods, and new weapons encouraged new defensive designs.


Thinking Like a Historian


Evidence Is Not the Same as Imagination

Historians study many kinds of evidence. A castle wall can show building methods and damage. A suit of armor can reveal metalworking skill and movement. A manuscript picture can show how an artist represented warfare. A written account can record events, but it may also contain mistakes, exaggeration, or bias.

A modern film, game, drawing, or reenactment can make history easier to imagine, but it is a secondary interpretation. It should be checked against older evidence and reliable scholarship.

This photograph shows a modern knightly combat reenactment at Malbork Castle. It is useful for asking questions about armor and movement, but it does not prove that a medieval fight looked exactly the same.


Ask Four Questions About Every Source

  1. Origin: Who created the source, where, and when?
  2. Content: What can you directly see, read, or measure?
  3. Context: What was happening when the source was created?
  4. Limits: What can this source not tell you by itself?

Good history often comes from comparing several sources. If a building, written record, and surviving object all point toward a similar conclusion, your argument becomes stronger.
