E9 E - Create a book podcast, review or trailer
E9 E - Create a book podcast, review or trailer
Mini-description: Create an English book podcast, review or short trailer with a concise summary, analysis, opinion and recommendation. Work independently, check sources and media, revise your own language and keep recordings private unless you choose otherwise.

Einleitung
This course is for English as a first foreign language, Year 9, E level, Baden-Württemberg. You create one product about a book: a podcast, a written review or your own short trailer. The focus is not on retelling the whole story. Your job is to select, explain, analyse and recommend.
Learning loop: English first → understand → respond → ask → use a hint → improve → use the language again.
I can ...
| I can ... | Target |
|---|---|
| summarise | give the main idea without retelling every event |
| analyse | explain a theme, character, conflict, perspective or effect |
| evaluate | give a clear opinion and support it with reasons |
| recommend | address a specific audience and explain why the book may or may not fit |
| create | produce a coherent review, podcast or trailer and revise it |
| interact | answer spontaneous follow-up questions in English |
Before you start
- Book choice: Choose a class reader, YA novel, accessible novel or non-fiction book that you have actually read.
- Copyright: Do not reproduce long protected passages. Paraphrase. Use only very short quotations when they are really needed and allowed.
- Privacy: Recordings are voluntary and can stay private. Do not upload classmates' voices, faces or private social-media data without permission.
- AI literacy: If AI tools are allowed by your teacher, check facts, sources and feedback. Keep your own wording and revision. Do not send private recordings or copyrighted book passages to external AI services without explicit permission.
Vorwissen
Before you choose a format, check your starting point:
- Quick recall: Name the protagonist, setting and central conflict in English without notes.
- Quick opinion: Give one claim about the book and one reason.
- Quick question: Ask one open question about a character, theme or choice.
- Quick source check: Name one source you could use and explain why it is trustworthy enough for your purpose.
If one step is difficult, use the matching help level later. Do not translate your whole idea into German first; build the English message from keywords and sentence starters.
Media start

Watch or listen actively. First watch without stopping. Then watch again and note only keywords. Use English captions if they help.
Viewing task: Identify the four basic jobs of a review: introduce, summarise, evaluate and conclude. Then explain which part should be shortest in your own product.
Viewing task: Note three choices a trailer creator has to make before filming. Which choice has the strongest effect on mood?
Listening task: Choose two fluency tips that you can use in your own recording. Try one immediately in a 30-second spoken summary.
Core input: from book to product

Step 1: Understand and select
Do not include everything. Select what your audience needs.
| Content | Keep it concise | Useful question |
|---|---|---|
| summary | setting, main situation, central conflict | What does the audience need to understand the book? |
| analysis | one or two important ideas | What makes the book interesting or meaningful? |
| opinion | a clear judgement with reasons | What worked for you, and what did not? |
| recommendation | a named target audience | Who might enjoy or benefit from this book? |
No-spoiler rule: Stop before major late twists unless your teacher asks for a full analysis.
Step 2: Context vocabulary
| Function | Useful words |
|---|---|
| summary | setting, plot, conflict, turning point, narrator, point of view |
| analysis | theme, character development, contrast, symbol, atmosphere, perspective |
| opinion | convincing, moving, thought-provoking, predictable, effective, uneven |
| recommendation | suitable for, especially relevant to, worth reading, may appeal to |
| production | hook, script, voice-over, pacing, soundtrack, storyboard, cut, transition |
Use words in context: Do not build a vocabulary list only. Reuse at least six of these words in sentences about your book.
Step 3: Language moves

Summary: The novel follows ... The central conflict begins when ... The story is set in ...
Analysis: This suggests that ... The contrast between ... and ... highlights ... The narrator's perspective makes the reader ...
Opinion: What I found most convincing was ... Although ..., I think ... From my perspective, ...
Recommendation: I would recommend this book to readers who ... It may be less suitable for readers who ... If you are interested in ..., this book is worth considering.
Discussion and follow-up: What makes you say that? Which scene best supports your point? Would your recommendation change for a different audience? How reliable is the source you used?
Step 4: Functional grammar
| Function | Language | Example |
|---|---|---|
| summarise a literary text | present simple | The narrator hides important information. |
| balance an argument | although, while, whereas | Although the pace is slow, the atmosphere is effective. |
| support a judgement | because, since, therefore | The ending feels convincing because the conflict has been developed carefully. |
| recommend | would, might, may | I would recommend it to readers who enjoy moral dilemmas. |
| add precision | relative clauses | The protagonist, who often misreads other people, becomes more self-aware. |
Check: Grammar must help your message. Do not add difficult structures only to sound advanced.
Step 5: Pronunciation and fluency

Aim for clarity, not accent-free speech. Mark thought groups in your script with a slash. Stress key content words. Use short pauses before important points. Record one test sentence, listen once and improve one thing only: pace, stress, volume or clarity.
Fluency drill: Speak for 40 seconds from keywords only. Repeat the same task once. Your second version should be clearer, not necessarily faster.
Choose your product
Option A: Book podcast
Length: about 2-4 minutes. Speakers: 1-3. A useful structure is hook → concise summary → analysis → opinion → recommendation → one final question.
Podcast language should sound spoken, not read like an essay. Use cue cards with keywords. If there are two or three speakers, react to each other and ask real follow-up questions.
Option B: Written book review
Length: about 250-350 words. Use a clear title and paragraphs. Keep the summary shorter than the analysis and evaluation.
A strong review does more than say “I liked it”. It explains why, uses selected evidence without copying long passages and addresses a reader.
Option C: Short book trailer
Length: about 45-90 seconds. Speakers: 1-3 or voice-over only. Use a hook, selected visuals, a clear mood and a final recommendation or question.

Create your own images or use properly licensed media. Do not use copyrighted film clips, music or audiobook recordings just because they are easy to find.
Reading and source check
Before you use a blurb, review, interview or background article, check:
- Source check: Who published it?
- Purpose: Is the source informing, selling, reviewing or entertaining?
- Evidence: Which claim is fact, which is interpretation?
- Perspective: Whose view is represented, and which view is missing?
- Paraphrase: Can you explain the useful information in your own English?
Mini-reading task: Compare an official publisher description with an independent review of the same book. Write three differences in focus, wording or purpose. Do not copy either text.
Mediation
Use mediation when information comes from German but your audience needs English. Do not translate line by line. Select what the listener or reader needs.
Task: A German classmate gives you a short German note about the book's historical or social context. Explain the relevant points in clear English for an exchange student. Leave out details that do not serve the purpose.
Help levels
| Level | Use it when ... | Help |
|---|---|---|
| Hint 1 | you know the idea but cannot start | Use one sentence starter from “Language moves”. |
| Hint 2 | your product is too general | Add one precise example and explain its effect. |
| Hint 3 | your argument is unclear | Use claim → reason → evidence → link to audience. |
| Hint 4 | you get stuck while speaking | Pause, rephrase and continue. Do not restart the whole recording. |
Feedback and error analysis
Two-pass feedback:
- Content first: Is the summary concise? Is there real analysis? Is the recommendation justified?
- Language second: Check connectors, verb forms, word choice, pronunciation and repeated errors.
Error clinic: Choose two recurring errors from your draft or recording. Name the pattern, correct two examples and create one new sentence with the correct form. Then use that form again in the final product.
Peer feedback frame: One point is convincing because ... / One point needs stronger evidence because ... / One language choice that works well is ... / One question I still have is ...
Transfer: use it again
Turn the same idea into another format:
- podcast → 120-word review
- review → 45-second trailer script
- trailer → 90-second spoken analysis
Keep the message, but change language, pacing and detail for the new audience and medium.
