E6 G - Sorry! – Sich entschuldigen und reagieren

Mini-Beschreibung: You learn short, polite phrases to say sorry, accept an apology and solve a small problem. Du versuchst zuerst Englisch. Deutsch hilft nur, wenn Du es brauchst.

Course profile: English as first foreign language · Klasse 6 · Baden-Württemberg · G-Niveau.

Einleitung

Sometimes things go wrong: You bump into someone. You are late. You take the wrong pencil. A friend is upset. Then a short, friendly apology can help.

Your learning path: Notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again.

Language rule: Try English first → Hint → German help → example → solution.

Important: Clear and kind English is the goal. Your accent does not have to be perfect. Recordings are optional and stay private. Do not upload personal recordings unless your teacher clearly asks for it. Use only fictional names and data in tasks.

Media starter: What do you notice?

Look at the picture. What word can you read? What feeling can it show?

Try English first: Say one sentence: “The person is …”

Hint: Think of sorry, polite, kind.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Was könnte die Geste bedeuten?

Example: “The person is saying sorry.”

Now listen. You can play the short audio more than once.

Say it quietly, then normally: I’m sorry.

Listen task: Can you hear Excuse me? You do not need to understand every word yet.

I-can goals

  1. I can say sorry. I can use “I’m sorry” and give a short reason.
  2. I can react. I can say “That’s OK”, “It’s all right” or “No problem”.
  3. I can check. I can ask “Are you OK?”
  4. I can help. I can say “Can I help?” or “Let’s fix it.”
  5. I can stay polite. I can speak clearly and kindly in a small conflict.

Quick check: What do you already know?

Choose or say a phrase for each situation.

Situation Try English first Hint Deutsch-Hilfe
You step on Sam’s shoe. __________ Start with “I’m …” Entschuldige Dich.
Mia says: “I’m sorry.” __________ You can accept. Nimm die Entschuldigung an.
Leo drops your book. __________ Ask about the person or the book. Reagiere ruhig.

Possible solutions: “I’m sorry.” / “That’s OK.” / “Are you OK?” or “No problem.”

Notice: Useful phrases in context

Picture input: “sorry” in everyday life

Here sorry is polite. It does not mean that the shop has hurt someone. English uses sorry in many everyday situations.

Mini-dialogue 1: A small accident

Lina: Oh! I’m sorry, Ben. Are you OK?
Ben: Yes. I’m OK.
Lina: It was my fault.
Ben: That’s OK. No problem.

Notice: Lina says sorry, checks Ben, and takes responsibility. Ben accepts the apology.

Mini-dialogue 2: A broken pencil

Noah: I’m really sorry. I broke your pencil.
Ava: Oh.
Noah: Can I give you another pencil?
Ava: Yes, please.
Noah: Here you are.
Ava: Thanks. It’s all right.

Notice: A good short apology can have three parts: sorry + what happened + a simple solution.

Word bank

English Small help in German Use
I’m sorry. Entschuldigung / Tut mir leid. basic apology
I’m really sorry. Es tut mir wirklich leid. stronger apology
It was my fault. Das war mein Fehler. take responsibility
Are you OK? Alles okay? check the other person
That’s OK. Ist okay. accept an apology
It’s all right. Schon gut. accept an apology
No problem. Kein Problem. calm response
Don’t worry. Mach dir keine Sorgen. calm response
Can I help? Kann ich helfen? offer help
Let’s fix it. Lass es uns lösen. find a solution

Keep it small: You do not need all phrases at once. Start with I’m sorry – That’s OK – Are you OK? – Let’s fix it.

Understand

Listen: Sorry or excuse me?

Listen to both short files.

I’m sorry is useful after a mistake or small problem.

Excuse me is often useful before you interrupt, ask a question or move past someone.

Try English first: Which phrase fits?

  1. You bump into someone: “__________.”
  2. You want to ask a stranger a question: “__________.”

Hint: mistake → sorry; get attention → excuse me.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Bei einem Missgeschick eher sorry, beim höflichen Ansprechen oft excuse me.

Solution: 1 “I’m sorry.” 2 “Excuse me.”

Watch and listen: A real English-learning video

G-level task: Watch only about the first two minutes. Use English subtitles if they help. Listen for I’m sorry and one phrase that makes an apology stronger.

Hint: You may hear a small word before sorry.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Achte auf eine Verstärkung wie so.

Possible answer: “I’m so sorry.”

Reading: The football problem

Fictional scene: Jay and Kim are in the school yard.

Jay kicks a ball. The ball hits Kim’s water bottle. The bottle falls down.

Jay: Oh no! I’m sorry, Kim. Are you OK?
Kim: Yes, I’m fine. But my bottle is dirty.
Jay: Sorry. It was my fault. Can I clean it?
Kim: Yes, please.
Jay: Here you are.
Kim: Thanks. That’s OK now.

Check:

  1. What falls down?
  2. What does Jay ask first?
  3. What solution does Jay offer?

Hint: Look for bottle, OK, clean.

Deutsch-Hilfe: Suche die drei Schlüsselwörter im Text.

Solution: The water bottle falls down. Jay asks “Are you OK?” He offers to clean the bottle.

Practise

Pronunciation: clear, not perfect

Listen again and repeat at your own speed.

I’m SOR-ry. The first part is stronger. Speak slowly enough to be clear.

Now try this short rhythm:

I’m sorry. → I’m really sorry. → Are you OK?

You may record yourself privately if you want. Recording is optional. Compare only for clarity, not for “perfect accent”.

Speaking drill: one line, one answer

Partner A reads the problem. Partner B answers. Then swap.

Problem Sentence starter Helpful answer
You are late. I’m sorry … That’s OK.
You take the wrong ruler. Sorry, I … No problem.
You bump into a friend. Oh! I’m … I’m OK.
You drop a classmate’s book. I’m really … It’s all right.

Feedback: Was the message clear? Was it kind? Did you use one useful phrase?

Build an apology

Use this simple pattern:

Step Phrase
1 I’m sorry.
2 I broke / dropped / took …
3 Can I help? / Let’s fix it.

Example: “I’m sorry. I dropped your book. Can I help?”

Grammar in use: For a finished mistake, you can often use a simple past form such as broke, dropped, took. You only need the form that helps you explain what happened.

Mini mediation: Help a friend

Your German-speaking friend asks: “Was kann ich sagen, wenn ich aus Versehen einen Stift kaputt gemacht habe?”

Try English first: Give your friend one short English sentence.

Hint: sorry + broke + pencil

Deutsch-Hilfe: Du musst nicht Wort für Wort übersetzen. Gib eine passende englische Formulierung.

Example: “I’m sorry. I broke your pencil.”

Use

Role-play: small school conflicts

Choose one fictional card. Keep the dialogue short.

  1. Pencil: You take the wrong pencil.
  2. Seat: You sit in a classmate’s seat by mistake.
  3. Book: You drop a classmate’s book.
  4. Late: You arrive late for a group task.

Use at least three parts: apology → reaction → solution.

Sentence starters: “I’m sorry …” / “That’s OK.” / “Are you OK?” / “Can I help?” / “Let’s fix it.”

Short writing output: a message

Write a 3–4 line message to a fictional classmate. Situation: You took the wrong workbook home.

Try English first.

Hint: Start: “Hi Alex, I’m sorry …”

Deutsch-Hilfe: Schreibe kurz: Was ist passiert? Entschuldigung? Lösung?

Example: “Hi Alex, I’m sorry. I took your workbook. I can bring it tomorrow. Sorry!”

Checklist: short sentence, polite phrase, clear solution.

Feedback

Use this small partner check. Do not score accents.

Check Yes / Not yet
I heard a clear apology.
I heard a calm reaction.
I heard a simple solution.
The English was understandable.

One helpful feedback sentence: “Good. I understood you.” or “Try ‘I’m sorry’ first.”

Use again

Do the same role-play again with a new situation. Change one phrase.

First try: “I’m sorry.”
Second try: “I’m really sorry.”
First reaction: “That’s OK.”
Second reaction: “No problem.”

This is how short language becomes active language: use it, get feedback, use it again.
