English: Incomplete cast lead papal bulla of Pope Clement VI (1342-1352), with the name in relief CLE/MENS/PP VI on the reverse, a floret above and below. The small floret at the start of the text, and the reversed bar to the 'N' are characteristic of bullae of Clement VI. The obverse is very worn and only a few pellets remain that would have formed part of the border and surrounded the heads of St. Peter and St. Paul, to the left and right of a cross in the centre. Bullae of Clement VI are relatively frequent and mark an upsurge in the use of papal documents about the time of the Black Death. The edge on one side of the bulla has been damaged, possibly since it was buried, or perhaps when it was removed from its document. The bulla may have been bent back slightly for the cord to be extracted, and then bent flat again. It is certainly no longer flat, but any such operation must have occurred in antiquity as the bulla is now too fragile for it to have happened recently. The reason for removing the bulla is not known, although this practice has now been noticed on a number of examples from across the country.
