In 2013, EPA published the fifth Drinking Water Infrastructure Needs Survey and Assessment, which estimated that the nation’s drinking water utilities need $384.2 billion in infrastructure investment over the next 20 years for pipes, treatment plants, storage tanks, and other key infrastructure components. EPA conducted previous surveys in 1995, 1999, 2003, and 2007 which estimated a 20-Year national need (in billions) of $227.3, $224.8, $375.9, and $379.7 (adjusted for 2011 dollars). This estimate only includes infrastructure needs that are eligible for funding by the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF). EPA uses this estimate to allocate DWSRF capitalization grants to states. |
