Strength, Balance, and Flexibility



Introduction

Welcome to Strength, Balance, and Flexibility, a movement course for Grades 5–6. You use these abilities every day when you carry a school bag, climb stairs, ride a bicycle, dance, play games, reach for an object, or land after a jump. In this course, you will learn what each ability means, how they work together, and how to practise them safely.

Strength is your ability to use your muscles to push, pull, lift, hold, or control your body. Balance is your ability to stay steady when you are still or moving. Flexibility is your ability to move your joints comfortably through a useful range of motion. Together, these skills support physical fitness, physical education, sports, play, and everyday movement.


Three Important Movement Abilities


Strength: Creating and Controlling Force

You use strength when your muscles create force. You do not need heavy weights to practise strength. For learners your age, many useful activities use your own body weight, such as a wall push, a squat, climbing, crawling, or a short plank. Good strength practice is controlled: move smoothly, keep breathing, and focus on your position instead of rushing.

A plank is an example of a bodyweight strength hold. Your trunk stays firm while your arms, shoulders, and core muscles help support your position. A squat uses the muscles of your legs and hips as you lower and raise your body.

Balance: Staying Steady

Balance helps you control your body over your base of support. When you stand on two feet, your base is fairly wide. When you stand on one foot, your base becomes smaller, so the task is harder. You can make a balance task easier by standing near a wall, using a fingertip for support, or widening your stance.

Your brain combines information from your eyes, your inner ears, and sensors in your muscles and joints. These signals help your body make tiny corrections so you can stay upright. This is one reason balance can change when you move your head, change where you look, or stand on a different surface.

Try a simple tree-pose balance near a wall: stand tall, keep your eyes on one still point, and place one foot lightly against the other ankle or lower leg. Do not press your foot against the knee joint. Switch sides so both legs get a turn.

Flexibility: Moving Through a Comfortable Range

Flexibility describes how comfortably a joint and the tissues around it can move through a range of motion. Different body parts can have different levels of flexibility. You do not need to be able to do the splits to be flexible enough for healthy movement.

A safe stretch should feel gentle, not painful. Move into the stretch slowly, keep breathing, and avoid forcing or bouncing. Stretching is often most comfortable when your body is already warm from light movement. Your goal is controlled movement, not a contest to see who can reach the farthest.

A cool-down can include easy movement and gentle stretching. Follow this American Heart Association video and notice how the pace becomes calmer.


How the Three Abilities Work Together

Strength, balance, and flexibility often appear in the same movement. Imagine stepping onto a low bench. Your leg muscles need strength to lift and lower your body, your nervous system uses balance to keep you steady, and your hips and ankles need enough flexibility to move comfortably.

Think about landing after a small jump. Your legs use strength to slow your body, your balance helps keep your body over your feet, and your joints need enough movement range to bend smoothly. In a throw, your trunk and arm muscles create force, balance helps you control your stance, and flexibility allows your shoulder and trunk to move through a comfortable path.

Coordination connects these abilities. Coordination means different body parts work together in the right order and at the right time. A movement can be strong but still difficult if balance or coordination is missing.


Safe Practice

Before practising, clear enough space so you will not hit furniture or another person. Use a flat, non-slippery surface. For balance tasks, work near a wall or stable support when needed. Warm up with easy movements such as marching, arm circles, and gentle side steps.

During strength activities, use slow, controlled movements and keep breathing. During flexibility activities, stretch only to a gentle pulling feeling and never force a joint. During partner activities, respect personal space and never push another learner deeper into a stretch.

If an activity causes pain, stop. If you feel dizzy, unwell, or unusually unstable, stop and tell your teacher or another responsible adult. A good movement lesson should help you learn, not make you ignore warning signs from your body.


A Simple Learning Circuit

This circuit is for practising movement quality, not for competing. Your teacher can change the time, repetitions, or movements so the activity suits your class.

After the circuit, ask yourself: Which station became easier when you slowed down? Which station needed the most concentration? Which movement used more than one of the three abilities?
