Introduction

Welcome to Polar Environments. In this course, you will explore Earth's coldest regions: the Arctic in the north and Antarctica in the south. You will learn how ice, oceans, land, seasons, animals, plants, and people are connected in these environments. You will also investigate how climate change is affecting polar regions and why scientists study them.

Learning goals: By the end of the course, you should be able to compare the Arctic and Antarctica, explain several animal and plant adaptations, distinguish sea ice from land ice, describe how people live and work in polar regions, and use evidence to explain why changes near the poles can matter around the world.

Where Are the Polar Environments?

Earth has two polar regions. They are both cold, but their geography is very different.


The Arctic

The Arctic is the region around the North Pole. At its center is the Arctic Ocean, which is surrounded by the northern parts of North America, Europe, and Asia. Much of the ocean is covered by sea ice for part or all of the year. Around the ocean are islands, coasts, mountains, glaciers, and wide areas of tundra.

The Arctic is not an empty wilderness. Millions of people live in the wider Arctic region. Indigenous peoples, including Inuit, Sámi, Nenets, Chukchi, and many other communities, have deep histories, cultures, languages, and knowledge connected with northern lands and waters.

Sea ice is important habitat for animals such as polar bears and seals.

Antarctica

Antarctica is a continent around the South Pole. It is mostly covered by a very thick ice sheet. The continent is surrounded by the Southern Ocean, where sea ice grows during the cold season and melts back during the warmer season.

Antarctica has no Indigenous human population and no permanent towns or cities. Scientists and support teams live there temporarily at research stations. They study the atmosphere, ice, oceans, rocks, weather, and living things.

Light, Seasons, and Weather

Polar environments receive sunlight at a low angle for much of the year. Because Earth is tilted as it travels around the Sun, places near the poles experience very large seasonal changes in daylight.

Near and beyond the polar circles, summer can bring the midnight sun, when the Sun stays above the horizon for 24 hours. Winter can bring polar night, when the Sun does not rise for at least one full day. The exact length of these periods depends on how close a place is to a pole.

Cold air, strong winds, snow, and ice are common, but polar weather is not the same everywhere. Coastal areas, inland ice, mountain valleys, tundra, and open ocean can have very different conditions.

The northern lights can be seen in high northern latitudes when charged particles from the Sun interact with gases high in Earth's atmosphere.


Ice: More Than One Kind

The word ice can describe several different parts of a polar environment. Knowing the difference is important.

Sea ice is frozen seawater that floats on the ocean. It grows and melts with the seasons. Because it already floats, melting sea ice does not directly raise sea level in the same way that melting land ice does.

Glaciers form on land from snow that builds up, is compressed, and slowly turns into moving ice. Very large connected areas of land ice are called ice sheets. Today, the two great ice sheets are in Antarctica and Greenland.

An ice shelf is a thick floating extension of land ice attached to a coast. An iceberg is a piece of freshwater ice that has broken from a glacier or ice shelf and is floating freely in the sea.

Permafrost is ground that stays frozen for at least two years in a row. It is common in parts of the Arctic. The upper surface can thaw during summer, allowing small plants to grow.


Tundra: A Treeless Biome

Tundra is a cold, windy biome where the growing season is short and trees are usually absent. Arctic tundra may contain mosses, lichens, grasses, sedges, dwarf shrubs, and small flowering plants. These plants often grow low to the ground, which helps protect them from strong winds.

This summer view of Svalbard shows that a polar landscape is not always completely white. In warmer months, tundra plants can grow above the frozen ground.


Animals and Their Adaptations

An adaptation is a feature or behavior that helps a living thing survive and reproduce in its environment. Polar animals have many different adaptations.

Insulation: Polar bears, seals, whales, foxes, and some birds keep warm with thick fur, feathers, or a layer of body fat called blubber.

Body shape: Compact bodies and shorter ears or limbs can reduce heat loss. Some animals also have large paws or feet that spread their weight on snow and ice.

Camouflage: White winter fur can help an Arctic fox or hare blend into snowy surroundings. Camouflage can help a predator approach prey or help prey avoid predators.

Migration: Many birds travel long distances to reach polar regions in summer, when food is more available and days are long.

Huddling: Emperor penguins can gather closely together during severe Antarctic winter weather, reducing heat loss.

Emperor penguins are strongly adapted to Antarctic cold. Parents protect and care for a single chick during an extraordinary breeding cycle on the ice.

Food Webs in Polar Regions

Living things are connected through food chains and food webs. Tiny organisms can support much larger animals.

In the ocean, microscopic algae and phytoplankton use sunlight to make food. Tiny animals such as zooplankton and krill eat these producers. Fish, seabirds, seals, whales, and other predators feed at higher levels.

In the Arctic, a simplified sea-ice food chain might be: algae → small animals and fish → seals → polar bears. Real food webs are more complicated because most animals eat more than one kind of food.

In Antarctica, krill are especially important. Many penguins, seals, fish, and whales eat krill directly or depend on food webs that include krill.

People in Polar Environments

People have lived in the Arctic for thousands of years. Indigenous Arctic communities developed knowledge, clothing, tools, travel methods, food systems, stories, and technologies suited to local environments. Today, Arctic communities combine long-standing traditions with modern life in many different ways. It is important not to treat all Arctic peoples as one group: cultures and languages differ greatly across the region.

In Antarctica, people are temporary residents. Research stations support scientists, engineers, cooks, doctors, pilots, technicians, and many other workers. International agreements guide peaceful scientific cooperation and environmental protection.


Why Polar Environments Matter

Polar regions help influence Earth's climate. Bright snow and ice reflect much of the Sun's energy back toward space. Darker ocean or land absorbs more energy. This difference in reflectivity is called albedo.

Polar ice also stores large amounts of freshwater. When land ice in Greenland or Antarctica loses mass and the meltwater reaches the ocean, it contributes to global sea-level rise.

Polar oceans are connected with ocean circulation and marine food webs. Changes in the poles can therefore have effects far beyond the Arctic and Antarctica.


Climate Change in the Polar Regions

Earth is warming because human activities, especially burning fossil fuels, have increased the amount of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The Arctic is warming faster than the global average.

Scientists have measured a long-term decline in Arctic sea ice, especially at the end of summer. Greenland and Antarctica are also losing land ice. Thawing permafrost, changing snow cover, shifting habitats, coastal erosion, and changing food webs can affect both wildlife and people.

Climate change does not make every polar place change in exactly the same way. Scientists use satellites, weather stations, ocean instruments, field observations, and long records to measure patterns carefully.

How Scientists Study the Poles

Scientists ask questions such as: How thick is sea ice? How fast is a glacier moving? Which animals are present? How warm is the ocean? How is permafrost changing?

They collect evidence in many ways. Satellites measure large areas from space. Weather stations record temperature, wind, and pressure. Research ships collect ocean data. Ice cores preserve layers of old snow and ice that can reveal past atmospheric conditions. Wildlife researchers may count animals, track movements, or study feeding patterns.

Scientists also work with Indigenous knowledge holders in many Arctic regions. Local and Indigenous observations can add long-term, place-based knowledge about sea ice, animals, weather, and environmental change.
