Introduction

Every day, matter changes. An ice cube melts, a sheet of paper is cut, a bicycle chain rusts, and bread turns brown in a toaster. Scientists group many of these events into physical changes and chemical changes.

A physical change changes the size, shape, state, or appearance of matter without making a new substance. A chemical change forms one or more new substances with different properties. Learning to tell the difference helps you understand cooking, weathering, recycling, manufacturing, and many events in a science laboratory.

What Is a Physical Change?

In a physical change, the substance stays the same kind of substance even though it may look different. Imagine an ice cube. When the ice melts, it becomes liquid water, but it is still water. When liquid water freezes, it becomes solid ice, but no new substance is made.

Common physical changes include melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation, cutting, crushing, bending, and some kinds of dissolving. These changes affect physical properties such as state, size, shape, or texture.


Changes of State

Matter can exist as a solid, liquid, or gas. A change from one state to another is usually a physical change because the substance keeps the same chemical identity. Ice, liquid water, and water vapor are all forms of water.

A useful question is: Did the kind of substance change, or only its state? If only the state changed, you are observing a physical change.


Changes in Size or Shape

Tearing paper, sharpening a pencil, crushing a can, and cutting an apple into pieces all change size or shape. The material may be harder to put back together, but that does not make the change chemical.

This is important: reversibility is not a perfect test. Many physical changes can be reversed, but some cannot easily be undone. A torn sheet of paper is still paper even though you cannot restore it perfectly.


Dissolving Can Be a Physical Change

When table salt dissolves in water, the salt spreads through the water and becomes difficult to see. In a basic classroom example, this is treated as a physical change because no new substance is produced and the salt can be recovered by evaporating the water.

Do not decide only by appearance. A substance can seem to “disappear” and still be present in a mixture.


What Is a Chemical Change?

A chemical change happens when matter changes into one or more new substances. Chemical changes are also called chemical reactions. The starting substances are called reactants, and the new substances formed are called products.

Examples include iron rusting, wood burning, an egg cooking, and baking soda reacting with vinegar.


Evidence of a Chemical Change

You usually cannot see atoms directly, so you look for evidence. Possible clues include:

  1. A new gas forms, such as fizzing that is not caused by boiling.
  2. A lasting color change occurs because new substances form.
  3. Energy is released or absorbed, causing an unexpected temperature or light change.
  4. A new solid forms when two liquids are mixed.
  5. A new smell appears, although you should never sniff unknown substances directly.

No single clue always proves a chemical change. For example, bubbles in boiling water are water vapor and are part of a physical change. Mixing two colors of paint can make a new color without making a new substance. Good scientists use several observations and ask whether new substances formed.


Rusting

Rusting is a chemical change. Iron reacts with oxygen in the presence of water or moisture and forms rust, which contains iron oxides and related compounds. Rust has properties that are different from the original shiny iron.

Rusting can be slow, which reminds you that chemical changes do not have to happen quickly.


Burning and Combustion

Combustion is a chemical reaction in which a substance reacts with oxygen and releases energy. Burning wood or candle wax forms new substances, including gases.

A burning candle is a useful example because more than one change happens at once. Wax near the flame melts, and melting is a physical change. Wax vapor then burns, and burning is a chemical change.


Looking at Changes Through the Particle Model

All matter is made of tiny particles. In a physical change, the particles may move, spread out, come closer together, or change arrangement, but the substance keeps the same chemical identity. During melting, for example, water particles can move more freely while remaining water.

In a chemical change, atoms are rearranged into new combinations. The reactants are changed into products. The atoms are not simply destroyed; they become part of new substances. This idea connects to the conservation of mass: in a closed system, matter is conserved even when a chemical reaction makes products that look very different from the reactants.

The best rule is not “physical changes are reversible and chemical changes are not.” Instead, ask: Was a new substance formed?

Safe Investigation Habits

Science is most useful when it is careful and safe. Wear eye protection when your teacher asks you to. Never taste laboratory materials. Do not directly smell unknown substances. Never seal a container in an experiment that produces gas, because pressure can build up. Use flames, hot plates, or boiling water only when a teacher or responsible adult is supervising.

Record what you observe before, during, and after a change. Separate observation from explanation. “I saw bubbles” is an observation. “A new gas formed” is an explanation that needs evidence.
