Introduction

Music can be thought of as sound organized through time. Three ideas help you understand how many songs and instrumental pieces are built: melody, harmony, and chords. A melody is the line you can usually sing or hum. Harmony describes how pitches sound together. Chords are groups of pitches that often provide the harmonic support beneath a melody.

In this aiMOOC, you will learn to hear, describe, build, and combine these elements. The examples focus mainly on common-practice and popular forms of Western tonal music, while remembering that musical cultures around the world organize pitch in many different ways. Music theory is not a set of rules that all music must follow. It is a toolkit for noticing patterns, communicating musical ideas, and making creative choices.

By the end of the course, you should be able to distinguish melody from harmony, build major and minor triads, recognize simple chord functions and progressions, explain how a melody can fit more than one chord, and create a short piece in which melody and harmony support each other.

Melody: The Musical Line

A melody is a sequence of pitches heard as a connected musical line. Pitch tells you how high or low a sound seems, while rhythm tells you when notes happen and how long they last. Because melody combines pitch and rhythm, changing either one can change the character of a tune.

Think of melody as movement through musical space. A line may rise, fall, repeat the same pitch, move mostly by small steps, or jump by larger intervals. The overall path is called melodic contour. You can sketch contour without writing standard notation: draw a line that rises when the melody rises and falls when the melody falls.


Steps, Leaps, and Intervals

The distance between two pitches is called an interval. When a melody moves to a nearby note of its scale, the motion often sounds smooth or conjunct. When it jumps across a larger interval, it sounds more disjunct. Good melodies can use both. Stepwise motion can make a line easy to follow, while carefully placed leaps can create emphasis, energy, or surprise.

Try singing C-D-E-F-G and then C-G-E-C. The first pattern moves mostly by steps; the second contains larger leaps. Neither type is automatically better. What matters is how the motion serves the musical idea.


Motifs and Phrases

A motif is a short, recognizable musical idea. A composer can repeat it, move it to a different pitch, change its rhythm, reverse its direction, or extend it. A phrase is a longer musical thought, similar to a phrase or sentence in language. Many melodies become memorable because they balance repetition with variation: enough repetition for the listener to recognize an idea and enough change to keep it interesting.

One useful composing strategy is question and answer. Write or improvise a short phrase that feels unfinished, then answer it with a related phrase that settles more clearly. The answer does not have to copy the first phrase. It can reuse the same rhythm with new pitches, reverse the contour, or end on a more stable note.


Harmony: Pitches Sounding Together

Harmony describes the vertical side of pitch: what happens when different pitches sound at the same time or when a sequence of sonorities creates a sense of movement. A melody can exist alone, but when another voice, instrument, or chord sounds with it, a harmonic relationship appears.

Harmony can be simple or complex. Two singers performing different notes at the same time create harmony. A guitar strumming beneath a voice creates harmony. An orchestra may create many layers at once. Harmony is therefore broader than chords: even two simultaneous notes form an interval and contribute to harmony.

Listeners often describe some combinations as stable, smooth, tense, bright, dark, open, or unsettled. These descriptions depend on musical style, tuning, register, timbre, and context. In tonal music, tension is often created and then released by moving toward a pitch or chord that feels like a home point.


Consonance, Dissonance, and Context

Consonance and dissonance are words used to describe relative stability and tension. They are not simple labels for good and bad. A dissonant interval can be exactly what a composer wants because tension makes a later resolution more noticeable. The same interval may also be treated differently in different musical styles.

When listening, ask what the sound is doing. Does it feel settled? Does it seem to want to move somewhere? Does a tense note resolve by step? Does the accompaniment make the same melody feel calm, suspenseful, joyful, or uncertain?


Chords: Building Blocks of Harmony

A chord is a group of pitches heard together as a harmonic unit. One of the most important chord types in Western tonal music is the triad, which contains three different pitch classes. A basic triad is built by stacking intervals of a third.

The lowest structural note of a chord is its root. The other two notes of a basic triad are called the third and the fifth because of their interval relationships above the root when the chord is in root position.


Major and Minor Triads

A major triad contains a root, a major third above the root, and a perfect fifth above the root. C major contains C-E-G. A minor triad contains a root, a minor third above the root, and a perfect fifth above the root. C minor contains C-E-flat-G.

The image above shows a C-major triad. Compare it with the C-minor triad below. Only one chord tone changes: E becomes E-flat. That small pitch change changes the interval structure and the chord quality.

Building Triads by Skipping Scale Notes

In a seven-note scale, a simple way to build a diatonic triad is to choose a scale note, skip the next scale note, choose the following one, skip again, and choose one more. In C major, starting on C gives C-E-G. Starting on D gives D-F-A. Starting on G gives G-B-D.

If you build a triad on every note of the C-major scale while using only the notes C, D, E, F, G, A, and B, you get these chord qualities: C major, D minor, E minor, F major, G major, A minor, and B diminished.

The pattern is useful, but do not treat it as a law for every kind of music. Chromatic chords, modal harmony, blues harmony, jazz harmony, and many non-Western traditions organize pitch differently.


Chord Symbols and Roman Numerals

Letter names such as C, Dm, or G describe specific chords. Roman numerals describe a chord's position within a key. In C major, C major is I, D minor is ii, F major is IV, G major is V, and A minor is vi. Uppercase Roman numerals usually represent major triads, lowercase numerals represent minor triads, and a small degree symbol can mark a diminished triad.

Roman numerals are useful because the same harmonic pattern can be moved to another key. A I-IV-V-I progression in C major uses C-F-G-C. In G major, the same pattern uses G-C-D-G. The exact pitches change, but the harmonic relationships stay similar.


Chord Inversions

A chord does not always place its root as the lowest sounding note. If C-E-G is rearranged as E-G-C or G-C-E, the notes still belong to a C-major triad. These arrangements are called inversions. Inversions can make a bass line smoother and reduce large jumps between chord shapes.

For Grade 7–8 work, focus on hearing that an inversion changes the bass note and spacing without changing the chord's basic identity. When you play chords on a keyboard, guitar, ukulele, or digital instrument, experiment with moving only one or two notes between successive chords.


Chord Progressions and Harmonic Function

A chord progression is an ordered sequence of chords. In tonal music, chords often create a sense of departure, tension, and return. Three broad harmonic functions are especially useful:

Tonic function feels relatively stable and connected to the home key. The I chord is the clearest tonic chord. Predominant function tends to move away from tonic and prepare stronger tension. IV and ii often serve this role. Dominant function creates a strong pull toward tonic. V is the most important dominant chord in many tonal styles.

A simple progression such as I-IV-V-I can therefore be heard as home, movement away, tension, and return. Another common pattern, ii-V-I, makes the preparation-to-dominant-to-tonic motion very clear.


Cadences

A cadence is a harmonic and melodic event that helps mark the end of a phrase or section. A V-I motion often gives a strong sense of arrival because the dominant chord resolves to the tonic. A phrase that ends on V usually feels less finished and can encourage the music to continue. Other cadence types create softer or more surprising endings.

When analyzing a cadence, listen to both the bass and the melody. The feeling of closure comes from the interaction of several musical parts, not from one chord symbol alone.


Connecting Melody and Chords

Melody and harmony are related, but they are not locked together in only one correct way. A melody note can belong to several possible chords. For example, the note E belongs to C major, A minor, and E minor. Choosing one of these chords changes the surrounding harmonic meaning.

A strong starting method for harmonizing a melody is to look at important melody notes, especially notes that fall on strong beats or last for a longer time. Then ask which chords contain those notes. Try more than one possibility and listen to the result.

Chord tones are melody notes that belong to the current chord. Non-chord tones are melody notes that do not belong to the chord sounding at that moment. Non-chord tones are normal and expressive. Passing tones can connect two chord tones by step, neighbor tones can decorate a stable note, and suspensions can briefly delay a resolution.


A Simple Harmonizing Process

Suppose you write a melody in C major. First identify notes that sound like important arrival points. Next list chords from the key that contain those notes. Then test a short progression, beginning and ending with a stable chord if you want a clear sense of home. Finally, listen for awkward jumps and experiment with inversions.

Do not expect the first version to be the final version. Harmonizing is partly analysis and partly experimentation. Two chord choices can both be correct while creating different moods.


The Circle of Fifths

The circle of fifths organizes keys by the interval of a perfect fifth. Moving clockwise through major keys adds sharps in a regular pattern, while moving counterclockwise adds flats. Neighboring keys on the circle share many notes and chords, which is one reason transitions between them can sound smooth.

For this course, use the circle mainly as a map. Find C major, then locate G major and F major beside it. Notice how closely related keys sit near one another. You can also use the circle to think about chord roots moving by fifths, as in many progressions.

The circle is helpful, but it does not tell you which progression you must write. It is a reference tool for key signatures, relationships, and possible harmonic movement.


Listening Like a Musician

Listening becomes more powerful when you know what to focus on. Choose a school-appropriate song or instrumental piece and listen several times, each time with a different goal.

On the first listening, follow the main melody and trace its contour with your hand. On the second, focus on the bass or chordal accompaniment. On the third, identify moments where the harmony feels stable or tense. On the fourth, notice where phrases seem to end. If possible, compare your observations with a classmate and explain what evidence you heard.

You do not need perfect pitch to do this. Relative listening is enough: you can hear whether a line rises or falls, whether a harmony changes, whether tension increases, and whether a phrase sounds complete.


Creating a Short Melody-and-Chord Study

You can create a short piece with only a few musical materials. Choose a key that fits your instrument or voice. Create a two- or four-measure melody with a clear rhythmic idea. Reuse one motif so the listener has something to recognize. Then add two to four chords that support important melody notes.

Try one version in which the harmony changes slowly and another in which it changes more often. Compare the effect. Next, keep the melody the same but replace one chord with another chord that shares the melody note. The exercise demonstrates an important idea: harmony can change the meaning and color of a melody without changing the melody itself.
