Evaluating Claims and Evidence



Introduction

Every day, you meet claims in news reports, advertisements, social media posts, essays, videos, conversations, and school texts. Some claims are well supported. Others use weak evidence, missing context, emotional language, or unreliable sources. Learning to evaluate claims and evidence helps you read critically, write stronger arguments, and make better-informed decisions.

This aiMOOC is designed for Grades 9–10 English. You will learn how to identify a claim, examine the evidence offered for it, judge the quality of sources, notice gaps in reasoning, compare conflicting accounts, and explain your own conclusion with appropriate confidence.

A useful goal is not to become automatically skeptical of everything. Instead, you should become a careful reader who asks good questions, checks important details, and changes a judgment when stronger evidence appears. These habits connect critical thinking, media literacy, argumentation, and responsible communication.


Claims, Evidence, and Reasoning


What Is a Claim?

A claim is a statement that presents a position, conclusion, interpretation, or factual assertion that can be supported or challenged. In an argumentative essay, the main claim is often the central position. In informational texts, smaller claims may appear throughout the text.

For example, consider the sentence: “Our school should add more shaded outdoor seating.” This is a claim because a reader can ask what reasons and evidence support it. A statement such as “The courtyard has six benches” can also function as a factual claim if its accuracy matters to an argument.

When you evaluate a claim, first make it precise. Ask: What exactly is being asserted? How broad is the statement? What words limit or strengthen it? Words such as all, never, usually, may, and in this study change what must be proven.


What Counts as Evidence?

Evidence is information used to support or challenge a claim. Depending on the task, evidence can include data, observations, documents, examples, quotations, images, measurements, survey results, records, and testimony from people with relevant knowledge. A piece of information is not automatically strong evidence simply because it includes a number, a quotation, or an expert.

Strong evidence should be connected to the claim and should help a reasonable reader judge whether the claim is likely to be true. In English classes, you often need to quote or paraphrase a text accurately and explain how that evidence supports your interpretation. In research tasks, you must also evaluate where the evidence came from and whether it can be checked.


Reasoning Connects Evidence to a Claim

Evidence rarely speaks for itself. Reasoning explains why the evidence supports the claim. A strong response makes the connection visible instead of expecting the reader to guess it.

A useful pattern is: claim → evidence → reasoning. Suppose the claim is that the school courtyard needs more shade. Evidence might show that most outdoor tables receive direct sunlight during lunch and that many students avoid them on hot days. The reasoning explains why those observations matter: if the goal is to make outdoor seating usable during lunch, additional shade could address the problem shown by the evidence.

The diagram above introduces formal argument terminology. In school writing, you do not need to turn every paragraph into a formal logic proof, but the central question is similar: do the supporting reasons actually justify the conclusion?


Five Questions for Evaluating Evidence

When you encounter evidence, ask five connected questions.

Relevance: Does the evidence actually address the claim? Interesting information can still be irrelevant.

Accuracy: Is the information represented correctly? Check quotations, calculations, labels, dates, and the original context when possible.

Sufficiency: Is there enough evidence to justify the strength of the claim? One example can show that something is possible, but it usually cannot prove that it is common.

Representativeness: Does the evidence reflect the larger group or situation being discussed? A tiny or unusual sample can create a misleading impression.

Source quality: Who produced the information, for what purpose, using what methods, and with what level of expertise or access to the facts?

These questions work together. A reliable source can still provide evidence that is irrelevant to a particular claim, and relevant evidence can still be too limited to support a broad conclusion.


Strong Claims Match the Strength of the Evidence

Good writers do not make a claim stronger than the evidence allows. If a small survey finds that many students in one class prefer later homework deadlines, a cautious claim might say, “In this class, most surveyed students preferred later deadlines.” The evidence would not justify “All students learn better with later deadlines.”

This is called qualification: limiting a claim so that it fits the available evidence. Useful qualifying words include often, may, in this sample, under these conditions, and the evidence suggests.


Evaluating Sources

Source evaluation asks whether the origin of information makes it more or less useful for a particular purpose. Do not reduce this task to a single label such as “good website” or “bad website.” Instead, examine the source in context.

Ask who created the source, what relevant knowledge or access the creator has, why the source was created, when it was produced, what evidence it cites, and whether other credible sources independently support the same important facts.


Read Laterally, Not Only Vertically

Vertical reading means staying on one page and judging it mainly from its own design, wording, and claims. Lateral reading means leaving the page to learn what other sources say about the publisher, author, evidence, or disputed claim.

A professional-looking page can still be unreliable, and an unfamiliar site can still contain accurate information. When a claim matters, open new tabs, search for independent coverage, locate the original study or document, and check what trusted sources say about the organization behind the information.


Primary and Secondary Sources

A primary source provides direct evidence from the time, event, person, experiment, or dataset being studied. Examples include a speech transcript, original research article, interview, photograph, diary, law, or raw dataset.

A secondary source analyzes, explains, or synthesizes primary sources and other evidence. Examples include a textbook chapter, scholarly review, news analysis, or historical overview.

Neither type is automatically better. A primary source can be incomplete, biased, or difficult to interpret. A high-quality secondary source can place evidence in context. Your task is to decide which source is appropriate for the question you are asking.


Corroboration and Independent Verification

Corroboration means checking whether other evidence supports the same important point. If several websites repeat the same statement but all copy one original source, that is not the same as independent confirmation.

Trace claims back to their origin when possible. Compare reports that gathered information separately. If sources disagree, identify exactly where the disagreement lies: the facts, the interpretation, the methods, the date, or the definition of a key term.

An objection does not automatically defeat an argument. It gives you a reason to test the connection between evidence and conclusion more carefully. Strong arguments often become stronger when they address serious counterarguments fairly.


Numbers, Studies, and Surveys

Numbers can make a claim look precise, but you still need to ask how the numbers were produced.

Check the sample: Who or what was measured? How many cases were included? How were participants selected? A voluntary online poll may overrepresent people who feel strongly about an issue.

Check the comparison: “Twice as likely” sounds large, but you should also ask for the original rates. A change from one case in ten thousand to two cases in ten thousand is a doubling, yet the absolute difference is small.

Check the time frame: A short-term change may not represent a long-term trend.

Check the measurement: What exactly was counted or measured? Different definitions can produce different results.


Correlation Is Not Automatically Causation

A correlation means two variables change together in some way. A causal claim says that one factor produces a change in another. Correlation alone does not prove causation because another factor may influence both variables, the direction may be reversed, or the pattern may be coincidental.

When a text makes a causal claim, look for stronger support: a plausible mechanism, careful controls, repeated findings, experiments where appropriate, or other designs that reduce alternative explanations.


Visual Evidence: Images, Graphs, and Charts

Images can be powerful evidence, but they can also omit context. Ask when and where an image was made, who created it, whether it has been cropped or edited, and whether the caption accurately describes it.

For graphs and charts, inspect the title, axes, labels, units, time range, source, and scale. A graph can use accurate numbers while still creating a misleading visual impression through a truncated axis, uneven intervals, or selective time period.

Common Weaknesses in Arguments

A logical fallacy is a pattern of faulty reasoning. Not every weak argument fits a named fallacy, but learning common patterns can help you notice problems.

Cherry picking selects evidence that supports a position while ignoring important evidence that points another way.

False dilemma presents only two options when more possibilities exist.

Ad hominem attacks a person instead of addressing the relevant reasoning or evidence.

Hasty generalization draws a broad conclusion from too little or unrepresentative evidence.

Post hoc reasoning assumes that because one event happened before another, the first event caused the second.

Labels are not substitutes for explanation. If you think an argument contains a fallacy, show exactly where the reasoning fails and what additional evidence would be needed.


News, Social Media, and Misinformation

Online information moves quickly. Posts can remove quotations from context, recycle old images, misread studies, or repeat claims without checking the original source. Some inaccurate information is shared unintentionally; other content is designed to mislead.

A useful response is to slow down before sharing. Identify the claim, look for the original source, check the date and context, search for independent reporting, and compare the claim with the best evidence you can access.

Counterclaims and Fair Evaluation

A counterclaim is a competing position or conclusion. Evaluating a counterclaim fairly can reveal whether your own argument is strong.

First, represent the other position accurately. Then ask what evidence supports it, whether that evidence is strong, and where the reasoning differs from yours. Avoid creating a weak version of the other side merely because it is easier to refute.

A strong writer can acknowledge uncertainty. If the evidence is mixed, your conclusion can be mixed too. Phrases such as “the strongest available evidence supports,” “the evidence is limited,” or “more information is needed” communicate responsible judgment.


A Practical Evaluation Routine

Use this routine when you face an important claim in a text, video, post, speech, or advertisement.

  1. Identify the claim: State the exact claim in your own words and notice qualifiers such as always, most, may, or in this study.
  2. Locate the evidence: List the specific facts, examples, quotations, data, or observations offered as support.
  3. Check relevance and sufficiency: Decide whether the evidence addresses the claim and whether there is enough of it.
  4. Evaluate the source: Investigate authorship, expertise, purpose, date, methods, citations, and original context.
  5. Corroborate: Look for independent sources and trace repeated claims back to their origin.
  6. Test the reasoning: Ask whether the conclusion follows and whether alternative explanations or counterclaims have been considered.
  7. Communicate your judgment: Explain what is well supported, what is uncertain, and what evidence would change your mind.
