Introduction

Earth is a world of connected land and water. When you learn to read a world map or globe, you can describe where places are, how they are connected, and why geographers sometimes divide the same world in different ways.

In this course, you will use the common seven-continent model and the five named oceans. You will also learn an important geography idea: a region is a useful way of grouping places, but regional boundaries can depend on the purpose of the map or study.

The image above is a satellite-based view of Earth's land and oceans. Notice how much of the planet is covered by water.

This BBC Teach video introduces the world, continents, oceans, the poles, and the Equator. As you watch, pause when you hear a place name and try to point to it on a globe or map.


Learning Goals

By the end of this aiMOOC, you should be able to identify the seven continents and five oceans on a map, use the Equator and hemispheres to describe location, explain what a geographic region is, compare different kinds of regions, and use map evidence to describe relationships between land and water.

You should also be able to explain why two correct maps may organize the world differently. Geography is not only about memorizing names. It is also about asking good questions about location, patterns, connections, and scale.


Continents


What Is a Continent?

A continent is one of Earth's very large divisions of land. In the seven-continent model used in this course, the continents are Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.

Look closely at the map. Which continents touch more than one ocean? Which continent is completely surrounded by the Southern Ocean? Which continents are connected by land?

While watching the continents video, keep a simple tally. Each time a continent is named, locate it on the map before the video moves on.


Meet the Seven Continents

A continent is not the same thing as a country. A continent can contain many countries. Australia is unusual because the same name is used for both a country and, in the seven-continent model, a continent.


Continents Can Be Grouped Differently

Not every school or map uses exactly the same continent model. Some systems combine Europe and Asia as Eurasia. Some combine North America and South America as one America. Some use Oceania as a continental label, while this course uses Australia for the continent and Oceania for the broader Pacific region.

The animated map shows that continent models are conventions. When you compare maps, first ask: What system is this map using? A different grouping does not automatically mean a map is wrong.


Oceans


One Global Ocean, Five Named Oceans

Earth has one connected global ocean. Geographers and ocean scientists divide it into named ocean basins so that locations are easier to describe and study. In the five-ocean model, the names are Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic.

About 71 percent of Earth's surface is covered by ocean. This is one reason oceans are so important for weather, climate, ecosystems, travel, and trade.

As you watch, notice that ocean boundaries are not walls. Water moves between the named ocean basins, making them parts of one connected global ocean.


The Five Oceans

Oceans connect as well as separate places. Ships cross them, currents carry heat, animals migrate through them, and coastal communities depend on them.


Hemispheres and World Map Skills


The Equator and Hemispheres

A hemisphere is half of Earth. The Equator is an imaginary line at zero degrees latitude that divides Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere.

The Prime Meridian is the reference line at zero degrees longitude. Together with the line on the opposite side of Earth, it helps us describe the Eastern Hemisphere and Western Hemisphere.

Try this map-language pattern: "Africa lies in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres because the Equator crosses it." Then make a similar sentence about South America, Europe, or Australia.


Reading a Flat World Map Carefully

Earth is round, but most classroom maps are flat. A map projection is a method for showing Earth's curved surface on a flat page or screen. Every flat world map changes some combination of shape, area, distance, or direction.

This means a world map is a model, not a perfect copy of Earth. Use a globe when you want to check how continents and oceans wrap around the planet. Use a flat map when you need a convenient view for comparing many places at once.

Cardinal directions also help you describe position. On most school maps, north is at the top, south at the bottom, east to the right, and west to the left. Remember that "north-up" is a map convention, not a natural top of the planet.


Major Regions


What Is a Region?

A region is an area that people group together because places share a feature or a useful relationship. A region may be based on location, landforms, climate, language, history, culture, trade, or another purpose.

Regional boundaries are often less fixed than country borders. For example, a climate region may cross several countries, and a cultural region may overlap more than one physical region. That is why you should always ask what feature was used to create a region.


Examples of World Regions

The following examples show common ways you may meet regional names in geography. They are not the only possible regional system.

This map shows one formal example: the United Nations geographical subregions used for statistical work. It is useful because it shows how one organization groups countries for a clear purpose. Other atlases, textbooks, and researchers may use different regional groupings.


Oceania: A Helpful Example

Oceania shows why "continent" and "region" are not the same idea. Oceania is a broad Pacific region that includes Australia, New Zealand, and many Pacific islands. Within Oceania, you may also see the regional names Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.

This Nat Geo Kids video about Asia is a useful example of regional thinking. Do not only collect facts. Ask which landforms, environments, and human activities help make different parts of a very large continent distinct.

Compare the South America video with the Asia video. Which details are about physical geography, such as landforms and ecosystems? Which details are about human geography, such as settlement, culture, or ways people use resources?


Physical and Climate Regions

Regions can also be based on natural features. A physical region might be organized around a mountain range, river basin, desert, island chain, or plain. The Amazon Basin, Sahara, Himalayas, and Caribbean are examples of names connected strongly to physical geography.

A climate region groups places with similar long-term patterns of temperature and precipitation. Climate regions often cross country and continent boundaries.

This climate map uses the Köppen-Geiger classification. You do not need to memorize its symbols here. Instead, look for the main idea: one world map can divide Earth into regions using climate rather than continents or political borders.


Connecting Land, Water, and Regions


The position of a continent next to an ocean affects travel routes, coastal environments, weather patterns, and connections with other places. For example, the Atlantic links ports in the Americas with ports in Europe and Africa, while the Pacific connects the Americas with Asia and Oceania.

When you study a region, look beyond its land boundary. Ask which ocean, sea, river, or coastline connects it to other regions.


Think Like a Geographer

A geographer asks more than "What is it called?" Try questions such as: Where is it? What is nearby? What pattern can I see? What features were used to draw this region? How does water connect this place to another place? Would the same region look different on another kind of map?

Use evidence from maps, globes, images, and reliable sources. If two maps disagree, compare their titles, legends, dates, purposes, and definitions before deciding why.
