Introduction

When you read an article, watch a video, hear a speech, or write an argument, you often meet a claim: a statement that someone wants you to accept. Good readers do not accept a claim simply because it sounds confident. They ask what evidence supports it, how strong that evidence is, and whether it really fits the claim.

In this aiMOOC, you will learn how to analyse supporting evidence in a careful, fair way. The course is designed for Grades 7–8 and uses examples from English Language Arts, Media literacy, History, Science, and everyday life. You will practise identifying claims, testing evidence, checking sources, comparing information, and explaining why evidence is strong or weak.

Think of evidence analysis as using a magnifying glass. You are not looking for reasons to reject everything. You are looking closely enough to understand what the evidence can and cannot prove.


Learning Goals

By the end of this aiMOOC, you should be able to:

  1. Identify a claim: State clearly what an author is trying to prove.
  2. Locate supporting evidence: Find facts, examples, quotations, observations, statistics, and expert information used to support a claim.
  3. Judge relevance: Decide whether evidence actually connects to the claim.
  4. Judge sufficiency: Decide whether there is enough good evidence for the size of the claim.
  5. Evaluate credibility: Check who created the information, when it was created, what its purpose is, and what evidence it provides.
  6. Corroborate information: Compare independent sources to see where they agree, disagree, or add useful context.
  7. Explain reasoning: Show how evidence supports a claim instead of simply dropping a quotation or statistic into your writing.


Claims, Evidence, and Reasoning

A strong argument usually has three connected parts:

Claim — the point the writer wants the reader to accept.

Evidence — information that supports the claim.

Reasoning — the explanation of how or why the evidence supports the claim.

For example, imagine the claim: Our school should create a quiet study area in the library at lunchtime. A useful piece of evidence might be a well-designed student survey showing that many students cannot find a quiet place to study. The reasoning would explain why that result supports the need for a quiet area.

Evidence becomes more useful when the connection to the claim is made clear. A statistic may be accurate but still weak if it has little to do with the claim.

The video above introduces the claim-evidence-reasoning structure. While you watch, notice that evidence alone is not the whole argument. The writer still needs to explain the link between the information and the claim.


A Quick Test

Ask three questions whenever you see evidence:

  1. What is the claim? Put it into your own words.
  2. What is the evidence? Point to the exact information being used.
  3. What is the connection? Explain why the evidence should make the claim more believable.

If you cannot answer the third question, the evidence may be irrelevant, poorly explained, or simply not strong enough.


Types of Supporting Evidence

Different claims need different kinds of evidence. No single type is automatically strongest in every situation.

A personal story can be meaningful evidence for a claim such as One student found this rule confusing. The same story is not enough to prove All students find this rule confusing. The wider the claim, the more evidence you usually need.


Numbers Need Context

Statistics can look powerful because they are precise, but precision does not guarantee quality. When you analyse a statistic, ask:

  1. Who collected the data?
  2. How many people or items were included?
  3. How were they selected?
  4. What exactly was measured?
  5. When was the data collected?
  6. Is the comparison fair?
  7. Does the statistic show a cause, or only a connection?

For example, if 80 percent of ten volunteers prefer one design, that is different from 80 percent of a carefully selected sample of 1,000 people. The percentage is the same, but the evidence is not equally strong.


Relevance: Does the Evidence Fit the Claim?

Relevant evidence directly helps to support, weaken, or clarify the claim being discussed.

Imagine this claim: The school garden should receive more water during a heatwave.

Evidence about unusually high temperatures, soil moisture, and signs of plant stress could be relevant. A fact about the cost of football uniforms might be accurate, but it does not help decide how much water the garden needs.

Relevance depends on the exact wording of the claim. Before judging the evidence, underline the key idea in the claim and ask, What would I need to know to decide whether this is true?


Relevance Is Not the Same as Credibility

A source can be highly credible but still provide irrelevant evidence. For example, a respected scientist may give accurate information about ocean temperatures, but that information might not help answer a claim about the school lunch menu.

The reverse can also happen: information may seem directly related to a claim but come from a weak or unknown source. Strong analysis checks both the connection and the source.


Sufficiency: Is There Enough Evidence?

Sufficient evidence means there is enough appropriate support for the claim being made. One strong piece of evidence may be enough for a small, specific claim. A large or general claim usually requires more.

Compare these two claims:

Claim A: One Grade 8 class preferred reading outdoors during a trial lesson.

Claim B: All Grade 8 students learn better outdoors.

A class survey might be enough to support Claim A if the survey was carried out well. It would not be enough for Claim B because Claim B applies to all Grade 8 students and also makes a claim about learning, not just preference.

When you judge sufficiency, ask whether the evidence matches the scope of the claim. Be careful with words such as all, always, never, best, and everyone. These words make a claim very broad and difficult to prove.


Source Credibility and Reliability

Evidence is only as useful as your understanding of where it came from. A credible source is one that gives you good reasons to trust its information for the question you are investigating.

Use this source-checking routine:

  1. Author or organisation: Who created the information?
  2. Expertise: What does the creator know about this topic?
  3. Evidence trail: Does the source show where its facts, data, or quotations came from?
  4. Date: Is the information recent enough for the claim?
  5. Purpose: Is the source trying to inform, sell, entertain, persuade, or provoke?
  6. Accuracy: Can important details be checked elsewhere?
  7. Context: What information might be missing?
  8. Independence: Can another source confirm the key point without simply copying the first source?

The video above focuses on source credibility. As you watch, compare its questions with the checklist in this course. Good source evaluation is not about trusting a website because it looks professional. It is about checking authorship, evidence, purpose, and verifiability.


Bias and Purpose

Bias is a tendency or point of view that can influence which information is selected, emphasised, or ignored. Bias does not automatically make a source useless. Every creator has a perspective.

Instead of asking only, Is this source biased?, ask more useful questions:

  1. What does the creator want the audience to think or do?
  2. Which evidence is included?
  3. Which evidence may be missing?
  4. Are opposing facts or explanations considered fairly?
  5. Can important claims be checked in independent sources?

An advertisement may be useful evidence for what a company claims about its own product, but it is usually weak evidence for an independent judgement that the product is the best on the market.


Corroboration: Check More Than One Source

Corroboration means checking whether other independent sources support the same important information.

If three websites repeat the same sentence from one press release, you do not really have three independent confirmations. Trace the information back to its original source. Then look for other evidence created separately.

Corroboration is especially useful when:

  1. a claim is surprising or important;
  2. the first source gives little evidence;
  3. sources disagree;
  4. a statistic is repeated without a link to the original data;
  5. a social media post makes a factual claim without context.

The image above is a reminder to check information before accepting or sharing it. Do not label something false simply because you disagree with it. Investigate the evidence, trace important claims, and compare reliable sources.


Using Quotations and Paraphrases as Evidence

A direct quotation uses the source's exact words. A paraphrase restates the source's meaning in your own words. Both can provide evidence, and both should be credited to the source.

A quotation is strongest when the exact wording matters. A paraphrase is useful when you need to explain an idea clearly and briefly. In either case, you should not leave the evidence alone. Add reasoning that explains its importance.

A useful paragraph pattern is:

Claim or point → Evidence → Explanation → Link back to the claim

Example:

Point: The trial quiet area appears to meet a real need.

Evidence: During a one-week trial, librarians counted an average of 35 students using the area each lunchtime.

Explanation: Regular use across the week suggests that the space was useful to more than one or two students.

Link: This supports the proposal to continue the quiet area while collecting more evidence over a longer period.

Notice the careful language: suggests is more accurate than proves because one week of data is limited.


Analysing Primary and Historical Sources

A primary source is an original item connected to the time, event, person, or investigation being studied. It might be a letter, photograph, diary, speech, newspaper, map, interview, or set of original data.

This image shows the front page of The Times from 4 December 1788. As evidence, it can tell you something about what was printed for readers at that time. It does not automatically tell you whether every statement in the newspaper was correct or whether all people agreed with it.

A useful analysis routine from the Library of Congress is to observe, reflect, and question.

  1. Observe: What can you directly see, hear, or read without guessing?
  2. Reflect: What might those observations mean?
  3. Question: What more would you need to know?
  4. Investigate further: Which other sources could help answer your questions?

This routine helps you separate what the source actually shows from the conclusions you draw from it.


Reading Arguments in Informational Text

When you read an article or essay, do not highlight every fact. First find the main claim and any smaller claims. Then group the evidence under the claim it is supposed to support.

While watching, pay attention to the difference between a claim and the details used to support it. Afterward, choose a short informational text and mark each claim with C, each piece of evidence with E, and each explanation with R for reasoning.


A Practical Annotation Method

Use a three-column note when reading:

Claim Evidence Your analysis
What is the writer saying? What information is offered? Is it relevant, sufficient, credible, and well connected?

In the analysis column, write a complete thought such as: This survey is relevant because it measures the same group named in the claim, but it may not be sufficient because only 18 students responded.

That sentence is stronger than writing only good evidence or bad evidence because it explains your judgement.


Worked Example: A School Study Area

Consider the claim: Our school should create a permanent quiet study area in the library at lunchtime.

Here are four pieces of possible evidence:

Evidence A: A school survey of 240 students reports that 72 percent sometimes struggle to find a quiet place to read or complete homework at lunchtime. The survey explains how students were invited to respond.

Evidence B: One student says, My friend and I hate noise in the cafeteria.

Evidence C: A 2018 article describes how some adult office workers reacted to open-plan offices.

Evidence D: During a one-week trial, librarians recorded an average of 35 students using the quiet area each lunchtime and fewer noise complaints in the surrounding library space.

Now analyse them.

Evidence A is relevant because it asks the same school population about the need for quiet study space. It is useful, but you should still check who responded, how the question was worded, and whether 240 students represent the whole school.

Evidence B is relevant as a personal example, but it is not sufficient for a school-wide decision. It shows one experience, not a broad pattern.

Evidence C may offer background about noise and concentration, but the setting and population are different. It needs a careful explanation before it can support a claim about middle-school students.

Evidence D is directly relevant because it records what happened in the actual school during a trial. It is still limited because one week may not show what would happen over a whole term.

Together, Evidence A and Evidence D give stronger support than either one alone because they answer different questions: one asks about student need, and the other observes real use. A responsible conclusion would still acknowledge limits and recommend continued data collection.


Common Evidence Traps


Cherry-Picking

Cherry-picking means selecting only the evidence that supports a preferred conclusion while ignoring important evidence that points another way. To avoid it, ask what a fair-minded reader would need to see, not only what helps your side.


The Single-Story Problem

One memorable example can make a claim feel true even when it is not typical. Ask whether the example is being used to illustrate a point or to prove a much wider rule.


Old or Out-of-Context Evidence

Older evidence is not automatically weak. A historical claim may require old documents. However, a current claim about technology, prices, rules, or recent behaviour may need recent information. Always match the date to the question.


Confusing Correlation with Cause

If two things happen together, one does not automatically cause the other. For example, if library attendance rises after new furniture is installed, the furniture may have helped, but other changes could also explain the rise.


Quotation Without Explanation

A quotation does not explain itself. After using it, tell the reader what part matters and how it supports the claim.


Repetition Instead of Independent Support

Seeing the same claim on many pages can create the feeling of strong evidence. Check whether those pages rely on the same original source. Ten copies of one unsupported claim are still one unsupported claim.


A Six-Step Evidence Analysis Routine

Use this routine when you need to analyse supporting evidence in a text, video, discussion, or research task:

  1. State the claim. Write it in one clear sentence.
  2. Identify the evidence. Point to the exact fact, quotation, statistic, example, or source.
  3. Check relevance. Explain what part of the claim the evidence addresses.
  4. Check quality. Examine the source, method, date, purpose, and context.
  5. Check sufficiency. Decide whether more evidence is needed for a claim of this size.
  6. Explain your judgement. Use because, however, therefore, although, or suggests to show your reasoning.

A good analysis can be mixed. You might decide that evidence is relevant but insufficient, credible but only partly connected, or useful but outdated for this particular claim. Careful readers often make qualified judgements rather than simple yes-or-no decisions.
