E9 G - Write an opinion text with reasons
Mini-Beschreibung: In diesem aiMOOC schreibst Du zu einem vertrauten Thema einen kurzen opinion text. Du nutzt eine klare position, passende reasons, mindestens ein example und eine kurze conclusion. Die Sprache bleibt überschaubar und klar.

Media start – Look, think, say: Look at the speech bubble. Imagine it says: School should start later. Do you agree? Say one short reason in English.
Learning path: English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again.
I-can-Ziele
Am Ende kannst Du sagen:
□ I can state my opinion clearly. □ I can give two simple reasons. □ I can add an example. □ I can use because, so and for example. □ I can write a short conclusion. □ I can ask another person for their opinion. □ I can improve my text with a checklist.
Vorwissen aktivieren
Choose one topic: homework every day, school uniforms or phones during breaks.
Say:
I think ... is good / not good because ...
Wenn Dir ein Wort fehlt, umschreibe es mit einfachen Wörtern. Eine Vollübersetzung ist nicht nötig.
Listening and Viewing

First viewing: Watch without subtitles. Listen for phrases that show an opinion.
After the first viewing, answer in English:
- What is the video about?
- Which opinion phrase do you remember?
- Which phrase could you use in class?
Second viewing: Watch again. English subtitles are now allowed. Write down two useful phrases. Do not copy the whole transcript.
Respond: Say one opinion with one of the phrases.
Ask: Ask a partner: What do you think? or Why do you think that?
Hint: Start with I think ... if you are unsure.
Improve: Add a reason with because.
Use again: Give the same opinion about a new school topic.
Reading: A short model text

Topic: Should school start later?
Position: I think school should start a little later. Reason 1: Students can sleep a little longer, so they may feel more awake in class. Example: For example, a student with a long bus ride can get up later. Reason 2: A later start can also make the morning less stressful. Conclusion: In conclusion, I think a later start can be a good idea if it works for the school and families.
Understand: Find the sentence with the main opinion. Then underline the two reasons and circle the example.
Respond: Do you agree with the model text? Give one short answer.
The simple structure
| Part | Question | Useful start |
|---|---|---|
| Position | What do I think? | I think ... |
| Reason | Why? | First, ... because ... |
| Example | Can I show a real or possible case? | For example, ... |
| Reason | What is another reason? | Second, ... |
| Conclusion | What is my final message? | In conclusion, ... |
Viewing task: Watch the short structure video. Stop after each main part and name it: introduction, main body or conclusion. For this course, keep your own text shorter and simpler than a full essay.

Pronunciation and Fluency
Goal: Be easy to understand. You do not need a perfect accent.
Read these chunks aloud:
I think / school should start later / because students need enough sleep.
For example / a long bus ride / can make mornings difficult.
In conclusion / I think / a later start is a good idea.
Speak in short groups of words. Stress the important words such as think, later, students, sleep and example.
Fluency task: Listen for a polite opinion phrase. Pause. Repeat one short phrase. Then use the same phrase with your own topic.
Speaking

Work with a partner.
A: What do you think about homework every day? B: I think ... because ... A: Why? or Can you give an example? B: For example, ... A: I agree. or I don't agree because ...
Then change roles.
Speaking target: Give an opinion, one reason and one example in about 30–45 seconds.
Recording: Eine Aufnahme ist freiwillig. Wenn Du übst, speichere sie privat auf einem erlaubten Gerät. Kein ungefragtes Hochladen.
Writing

Your task: Write a short opinion text about a familiar topic.
Length: about 70–100 words.
You need: one clear position, two reasons, at least one example and one conclusion.
Writing frame
| Step | Your sentence |
|---|---|
| Position | I think ... |
| Reason 1 | First, ... because ... |
| Example | For example, ... |
| Reason 2 | Second, ... |
| Conclusion | In conclusion, I think ... |
Important: Keep your own text. Improve it instead of replacing it with a completely new text.
A second media model: conclusion
Viewing task: Watch only for the final part. What should a conclusion do? Answer with one short English sentence.
Functional grammar
You only need a few structures.
because + subject + verb: I like the idea because students have more time.
so + result: The bus is late, so the student arrives stressed.
should + base verb: School should start later.
Accuracy focus: Check only these three points first:
- Is there a subject and a verb in each full sentence?
- After should, do you use the base verb?
- Does because introduce a clear reason?
Communication comes first. Correct the few important errors after your message is clear.
Hilfestufen
Help 1 – Word bank: good, useful, fair, easy, difficult, stressful, time, school, students, friends, family, learn, help, need, use.
Help 2 – Sentence starters: I think ... First, ... because ... For example, ... Second, ... In conclusion, ...
Help 3 – Mini planner:
| My part | My note |
|---|---|
| Position | ____________________ |
| Reason 1 | ____________________ |
| Example | ____________________ |
| Reason 2 | ____________________ |
| Conclusion | ____________________ |
Feedback and improve
Use this short checklist with your own text or with a partner.
□ I understand the opinion. □ I can find two reasons. □ I can find an example. □ The conclusion fits the opinion. □ The sentences are short enough to understand. □ because, so and for example are used correctly. □ I corrected only important errors first.
Give feedback like this:
I understand your opinion. Your first reason is clear. Please add an example. Check this sentence after because. Your conclusion fits.
Fehleranalyse
Find and improve the problem.
- I think school start later.
- Because students are tired.
- For example students have more time.
- In conclusion because later is better.
Check after you try:
- I think school should start later.
- I think school should start later because students are tired.
- For example, students have more time.
- In conclusion, I think a later start is better.
Mediation
A new student understands little German. Explain the main idea in simple English. Do not translate every word.
German note: „Viele Schülerinnen und Schüler wünschen sich mehr Zeit in der Mittagspause. Sie möchten essen, reden und sich kurz erholen.“
Possible start:
The main idea is that many students want ... because ...
Your goal is the message, not a word-for-word translation.
Safe and responsible use
Use fictional names and fictional school situations. Do not add private social-media data, addresses, phone numbers or real application data.
If an AI tool is allowed in your lesson, use it only with teacher-approved tasks and no private data. Check AI facts, sources and feedback. Keep your own first version so that your learning stays visible. Do not send texts to external AI services without permission.
Transfer: Use it again
Choose a new topic:
Students should have less homework. School uniforms are a good idea. Phones should stay in bags during lessons.
Write a new 70–100 word opinion text. Use the same structure, but change your reasons and example.
Can-do-Check
□ I can write a clear position. □ I can give two reasons. □ I can use an example. □ I can finish with a conclusion. □ I can ask for another opinion. □ I can improve my own text after feedback. □ I can use the structure again with a new topic.
Next course: Use the same ideas in a short spoken presentation.
