E9 G - Respond directly to another speaker
E9 G - Respond directly to another speaker
Mini-Beschreibung: Pick up a speaker's idea, agree or disagree politely, add your own point, and keep the conversation going with a question. Du arbeitest mit kurzen, klaren Gesprächsbeiträgen auf Englisch. Deutsche Hinweise helfen nur dort, wo sie nötig sind.
Niveau: Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klasse 9, Baden-Württemberg, G-Niveau.

Einleitung
In a good conversation, you do not only wait for your turn. You listen, respond to the last idea, add one point and often ask a question. This course uses one simple learning loop:
English first → understand → respond → ask → hint → improve → use again

I-can-Ziele
After this course, you can say:
- I can show that I understood the last speaker.
- I can agree or disagree politely and give a short reason.
- I can add one new point.
- I can ask a simple follow-up question.
- I can improve my answer after feedback.
Vorwissen aktivieren
Say or write one short answer in English:
- A friend says: “School should start later.” What can you say if you agree?
- What polite word or phrase can you use before you disagree?
- Which question can keep a conversation going?
Hint: Start small. One clear sentence is enough.
Medien-Einstieg
Watch the picture first. What shows that people are listening or speaking?

Now watch the short BBC Learning English video. First viewing: no transcript. Listen for one polite disagreement phrase.
After viewing: Say one phrase you noticed. If you need help, watch again with English subtitles. Use a transcript only after your first listening attempt.
Input: Respond directly
Use this four-step pattern:
| Step | Useful English | Your job |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Pick up | I agree with you. / I see your point. | Show that you heard the speaker. |
| 2 Respond | I agree because ... / I see your point, but ... | Give your reaction. |
| 3 Add | Also, I think ... / Another point is ... | Add one idea. |
| 4 Ask | What do you think? / Why do you think that? | Keep the talk going. |
Model: “I see your point, but I think the bus is better because it is cheaper. Also, we can travel together. What do you think?”
Listening and Viewing
Watch this BBC Learning English scene about disagreement.
First listen: What is the main problem? Do not use a transcript yet.
Second listen: Tick what you hear:
- a polite disagreement
- a reason
- a new suggestion
Transcript help: After two listening attempts, use the English subtitles or transcript offered with the video. Do not translate every line. Find only the words that help you respond.
Datei:Students talk about Wikipedia.webm
Mini-viewing task: Watch a short part of the Commons video. Notice how speakers take turns. You do not need to understand every word. Focus on: Who speaks? Who reacts? When does the next person start?
Reading
Read the short fictional dialogue.
Sam: I think we should have a class project about local places.
Ava: I agree because we know the area. Also, we can take our own photos. What place should we choose?
Sam: Maybe the park.
Ava: I see your point, but the town library may be easier because we can work indoors. What do you think?
Check: Which line agrees? Which line disagrees politely? Which line adds a point? Which line asks back?
Kontextwortschatz
| Function | Phrase | Small hint |
|---|---|---|
| agree | I agree with you because ... | give a reason |
| partly agree | I see your point, but ... | stay polite |
| add | Also, I think ... | one new idea |
| ask | What do you think? | invite the other speaker |
| clarify | Do you mean ...? | check understanding |
| repeat | Could you say that again, please? | ask for help |
More ways to show interest:
Optional extra practice on agreeing:
Aussprache und Fluency
Speak in chunks, not word by word:
I see your point / but I think / the bus is better / because it is cheaper.
Try this:
- Speak slowly once.
- Repeat with natural pauses.
- Stress the important words: point, think, better, cheaper.
- Record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless everyone involved clearly agrees to share them.
Goal: Be easy to understand. You do not need to sound like a native speaker.
Speaking
Partner task: Choose one topic: school start time, homework, class trip, school lunch or a hobby.
Speaker A gives an opinion in 1–2 sentences.
Speaker B must:
- react to A's idea,
- agree or disagree politely,
- add one point,
- ask one follow-up question.
Then switch roles.

Writing
Write a short reply of 4–6 sentences to this fictional message:
Alex: “I think our class should do one project day without phones. We could talk more and work together.”
Your reply should:
- pick up Alex's idea,
- agree or disagree politely,
- give one reason,
- add one point,
- end with one question.
Useful start: “I see your point, but ...” or “I agree with you because ...”
Mediation
Your partner says in German: “Ich finde die Idee gut, aber wir brauchen auch Pausen. Frag bitte, ob wir nach 45 Minuten fünf Minuten Pause machen können.”
Give the main message in simple English. Do not translate every word. Keep the meaning, use your own English, and ask the question.
Funktionale Grammatik
Focus on only a few forms that help communication:
| Job | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| give a reason | because + subject + verb | I agree because it is useful. |
| contrast | ..., but ... | I see your point, but I prefer Friday. |
| suggestion | should + base verb | We should start earlier. |
| ask back | What do you think? | What do you think? |
Accuracy focus: Say “because it is useful”, not “because is useful”. Say “What do you think?”, not “What you think?”
Hilfestufen
Help 1 – Phrase starter: I agree because ... / I see your point, but ... / Also, ... / What do you think?
Help 2 – Build four parts: react → reason → add → question.
Help 3 – Key words only: agree/disagree + because + also + question. Speak from the key words, not from a full script.
Feedback
Use this short partner check:
- Did the reply connect to the previous speaker?
- Was the agreement or disagreement polite?
- Was there a reason or new point?
- Was the message easy to understand?
- Was there a follow-up question?
Feedback sentence: “Your reply was clear because ... Next time, try ...”
Fehleranalyse
Improve these sentences:
- “I disagree. You are wrong.” → Make it more polite.
- “I agree because is good.” → Add the missing subject.
- “What you think?” → Build the question correctly.
- “Also.” → Add a complete idea.
Communication comes first. Fix only the errors that block meaning or belong to the four core patterns.
Transfer
Situation: Your group plans a class event. One person says, “We should do everything outside.”
Reply in 20–30 seconds. Use: pick up → respond → add → ask.
Then try again with a new situation. Change your reason and your question.
Sicher und fair arbeiten
Use fictional names and fictional profile or application data. Do not use private social-media information. Recordings are voluntary and should stay private unless everyone involved has agreed to share them. Do not upload another person's voice, photo or text without permission. Do not send private class data to external AI tools. If you use AI for ideas or feedback, check facts, sources and language. Keep your own text visible and decide yourself which changes you accept.
