E8 G - Write a report about an event
E8 G - Write a report about an event
Mini-Beschreibung: Write a short, structured report about a real or fictional school or personal event. You write mainly in the past simple, organise facts in a clear order and add a short opinion with a reason. This course is for English as a first foreign language, class 8, G level, Baden-Württemberg.

Look first – no dictionary yet. What can you see? What may have happened before this photo? What could happen next?
I can ...
- I can understand the main facts of a short report.
- I can answer the questions who, what, when, where.
- I can put events in a clear order.
- I can use the past simple for finished events.
- I can connect ideas with words such as first, then, after that, finally, because.
- I can write a short report and check it.
Before you start
English first: Read or listen once. Try the task. Ask for help only if you need it. Then use the hint. German help comes last.
Remember: A report gives clear information about an event. It is not a chat message and not a full story with lots of feelings.

Quick warm-up
Think of one event:
- a school sports day
- a class trip
- a birthday
- a school concert
- a club event
Say three facts in English: Where was it? Who was there? What happened?
Hint: Start with: Last ..., our class ...
Deutsch-Hilfe erst nach dem Versuch: Nenne Ort, Personen und ein wichtiges Ereignis.
Listening and viewing
First listen: Watch without subtitles if possible. Do not stop after every sentence. Listen for the main idea.
Try:
- What is the event or situation about?
- Name two things that happened.
- Which past-tense verbs do you hear?
Second listen: Now pause once or twice. Write five key words.
After your first attempts: Use captions or the transcript function if you need more support. Do not copy full sentences.
Hint: Listen for time words and past forms.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Beim ersten Hören zählt die Hauptidee. Beim zweiten Hören suchst Du Einzelheiten.
Optional viewing: How reports are organised
This video is more advanced. Do not copy all rules. Focus only on title – clear sections – facts – conclusion.
Stop after a useful idea and explain it in one easy English sentence.
Reading: A model report
Read once without using the word help.
School Sports Day – Short Report
Last Friday, our school held a sports day on the school field. Students from classes 7 and 8 took part. The event started at 9 a.m.
First, we ran short races. Then our class played a relay race. After that, there was a football match. Many students watched and cheered. At lunchtime, we had a short break.
The event ended at 2 p.m. Our class did not win every competition, but we worked well together. I liked the relay race because everyone helped the team.
Try:
- Who took part?
- Where did the event happen?
- Name three activities.
- When did the event end?
- What opinion does the writer give?
- What reason does the writer give?
Hint: The answers are in the opening, middle and ending.
Deutsch-Hilfe: Suche nach Personen, Ort, Zeit, Ablauf und einer begründeten Meinung.
Report structure
| Part | Your job | Useful language |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Give the basic facts. | Last Friday ... / Our class ... / The event took place ... |
| Main part | Put events in order. | First ... / Then ... / After that ... |
| Ending | Finish with a result or short opinion. | Finally ... / I liked ... because ... |
Target length for G level: about 80–120 words unless your teacher gives another length.
Context vocabulary

| English | Easy meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| event | something that happens | The event started at nine. |
| take part | join an activity | Our class took part. |
| field | outdoor sports area | We met on the school field. |
| audience | people who watch | The audience clapped. |
| winner | person or team that wins | The winner got a prize. |
| happen | take place | What happened next? |
| finally | at the end | Finally, we went home. |
| because | gives a reason | I liked it because it was fun. |
Try before translating: Choose four words and make four short sentences about your own event.
Pronunciation
Say these groups slowly, then at normal speed:
started – played – watched – helped
Listen to the endings. They are not always pronounced in the same way.
Speaking tip: Clear words and understandable rhythm are more important than sounding like a native speaker.
Try: Read one sentence from the model report aloud twice. Recording is optional and should stay private. Do not upload recordings unless your teacher has clearly asked for it and your school rules allow it.
Speaking before writing
Work with a partner or speak to yourself for 30–45 seconds.
Prompt:
- What was the event?
- Where and when was it?
- What happened first?
- What happened next?
- How did it end?
- What did you think, and why?
Useful support: Last ... / First ... / Then ... / Finally ... / I liked ... because ...
Less support: Speak from five key words only.
Functional grammar
Past simple: your main tense
Use the past simple for finished events.
Regular verbs: play → played, start → started, watch → watched
Irregular verbs: go → went, have → had, win → won, write → wrote
Negative: We did not win the match.
Question: What did your class do first?
Receptive forms: understand, do not force them into your own report
Passive – receptive: The prizes were given after lunch.
You only need to understand: someone gave the prizes.
Past perfect – receptive: Before the race started, our class had practised.
You only need to understand: the practice happened earlier.
Reported speech without backshift: Mia says the race was exciting.
For this G-level task, you do not need difficult backshift rules.
Writing workshop

Step 1: Plan
Write notes only.
| Question | Your notes |
|---|---|
| What event? | ... |
| When? | ... |
| Where? | ... |
| Who? | ... |
| First? | ... |
| Next? | ... |
| Ending? | ... |
| Opinion + reason? | ... |
Step 2: Write
Task: Write an 80–120 word report about a real or fictional school or personal event.
Choose one: sports day, class trip, concert, birthday, club event, or your own safe idea.
Writing frame – use only if needed:
Title: ...
Last ..., ...
First, ... Then, ... After that, ...
Finally, ... I liked / did not like ... because ...
Challenge: Use the frame only for the first sentence of each paragraph.
Step 3: Check
Use the 4F check:
- Facts: Did I include who, what, when and where?
- Flow: Is the order clear?
- Forms: Are my main verbs in the past simple?
- Finish: Did I add a clear ending or opinion with a reason?
Direct feedback and error analysis
Fix the sentence before looking at the help.
| Problem | Try to fix it | Help |
|---|---|---|
| Yesterday we go to the museum. | ... | finished event → past simple |
| Then we played a race. | ... | use ran a race or had a race |
| We liked it. It was good. | ... | add a reason with because |
| First we ate lunch. Then the trip started at 8 a.m. | ... | check the logical order |
Possible corrections: Yesterday we went to the museum. / Then we ran a race. / We liked it because we learned something new. / Put the start of the trip before lunch.
Mediation mini-task
A classmate gives you these German notes:
Schulfest – Samstag – Schulhof – Musik – Kuchenverkauf – Regen am Ende – trotzdem gute Stimmung
Do not translate every word. Write three simple English report sentences that give the important information.
Hint: Start with Last Saturday ...
Safe and responsible use of media and AI
Use only fictional profiles in tasks. Do not include private social-media data. Keep recordings voluntary and private. Do not upload personal texts, photos or recordings to external AI services without clear permission.
AI may help you check a word, a grammar point or feedback, but check the level, facts and feedback yourself. Your own writing should not be replaced by AI-generated text.
Transfer
Choose a new event and change at least three things: place, people, activities, result or opinion. Write only the plan first. Then tell a partner the event in 30 seconds.
Can-do check
Mark each statement: Yes / Almost / Not yet.
- I can find the main facts in a short report.
- I can use past simple forms for finished events.
- I can connect events in a clear order.
- I can give an opinion with a reason.
- I can write and check an 80–120 word report.
Next course: Improve a report about an event – make your report clearer, more varied and more accurate.
