E8 G - Conditional I – Real possibilities
E8 G - Conditional I – Real possibilities
Einleitung
Mini-Beschreibung: Festige conditional I / first conditional für reale beziehungsweise mögliche zukünftige Bedingungen und Konsequenzen.
Level: Klasse 8, G-Niveau, Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Baden-Württemberg.
English first: You meet the situation first, try it, ask a question, use a hint and only then use short German help. There is no full translation.

Look and think: It is Saturday morning. You want to meet friends outside. What will you do if it rains?
- Say one idea in English.
- Add a reason.
- Compare your idea with a partner.
Example: If it rains, I’ll meet my friends at the sports centre because we can stay dry.
I can ...
- I can understand first conditional sentences about school, free time and everyday plans.
- I can build sentences with if + present simple and will + base verb.
- I can connect a condition and a possible future consequence.
- I can give an opinion and a short reason.
- I can check and improve common first conditional mistakes.
What you already know
Try these before you read the rule.
- Complete: If I finish my homework, I ...
- Make a negative future form with will.
- Find the present simple verb in: If Sam misses the bus, he will walk to school.
Need help? Remember: won’t = will not. After will, use the base form: will play, will go, will be.

Context first: A Friday plan
Mia and Sam are fictional students. Their class is planning a sports afternoon.
Mia: If the weather is good, we’ll play football outside. Sam: And if it rains, we’ll use the gym. Mia: If I finish my homework early, I’ll bring the music speaker. Sam: Great. I’ll bring some water if my bottle is clean.
What do you notice? The speakers talk about a future situation that is possible. One event is the condition. The other is the consequence.

Functional grammar
For this course, use this clear pattern:
If + present simple, will + base verb.
Example: If we finish early, we’ll play outside.
You can also change the order:
We’ll play outside if we finish early.
Use a comma when the if-clause comes first. In the basic first conditional pattern for this course, do not use will directly after if.
Function: You use the first conditional when a future condition is real or possible and you want to say what will happen as a consequence.
Try → ask → hint → German help
Try: Complete: If Lena studies tonight, she ___ ready for the test.
Ask yourself: Which part is the condition? Which part is the result?
Hint 1: After if, use present simple.
Hint 2: In the result, use will + base verb.
German help if needed: Nach if steht hier das Simple Present. Die mögliche Folge steht mit will.
Check: If Lena studies tonight, she will be ready for the test.
Common errors and direct feedback
- If it will rain, we’ll stay inside. → Not the target pattern. Try: If it rains, we’ll stay inside.
- If I finish, I will goes home. → After will, use the base form: will go.
- If we miss the bus we’ll walk. → The grammar is clear; add a comma when the if-clause comes first: If we miss the bus, we’ll walk.
- I’ll call you if I will arrive. → For this course, use present simple in the if-clause: if I arrive.
Error check: Find the error, explain it in one short sentence, then rewrite the sentence.
Listening and viewing
Watch once without subtitles. Listen for the big idea, not every word.
First viewing
- What is the grammar topic?
- Does it talk about impossible dreams or possible future events?
- Write one example pattern you hear or see.
Second viewing
- Watch again.
- Pause after an example and predict the second clause.
- Now turn on English subtitles if you need them.
After the listening try: Explain the rule to a partner in simple English. Use German only for one difficult point if needed.
Short review video
Use this second video only after you have tried the tasks above. One clear speaker explains the same core pattern and gives examples.
Viewing task: Stop after an example. Say whether the first clause is the condition or the consequence.
Reading
Read the message. Do not translate every sentence.
Friday Sports Plan
Hi everyone, our class will have a sports afternoon on Friday. If the weather is dry, we’ll meet on the school field at 2 p.m. If it rains, we’ll meet in the gym. Please bring water. If you forget your bottle, you can use the water fountain near the changing rooms. We’ll start with football and badminton. If enough people want a quiet activity, we’ll also set up a table-tennis area. I’ll send a short message in the class learning platform if the plan changes. Please do not post private phone numbers or social-media profiles.
Reading check
- Where will the class meet if it rains?
- What happens if enough people want a quiet activity?
- Find two first conditional sentences.
- Which sentence is about digital safety?

Context vocabulary
| English | Short help | Example |
|---|---|---|
| condition | what must happen first | if it rains |
| consequence | the result | we’ll stay inside |
| finish | complete | finish homework |
| miss | be too late for | miss the bus |
| plan | what you want to do | weekend plan |
| change | become different | the plan changes |
| practise | train or repeat | practise after school |
| probably | likely | probably stay home |
Mini-task: Choose three words and make one connected statement about your day.
Pronunciation
Clarity is more important than accent.
Say these chunks with a small pause between condition and result:
If it RAINS, | we’ll STAY inside. If I FINISH early, | I’ll CALL you.
Notice the contractions: I’ll, we’ll, you’ll, won’t. Do not force an accent. Aim for clear word endings and a clear contrast between will and won’t.
Speaking
Work with a partner. Use school, free time or everyday life.
Round 1: Complete the idea
- If I have time after school, ...
- If my friend is late, ...
- If the weather is good this weekend, ...
- If we have a test next week, ...
Round 2: Add a reason Example: If I have time after school, I’ll practise basketball because I want to improve.
Round 3: React Partner A gives a condition. Partner B gives a consequence and one reason. Then switch.
Recordings are optional. If you record, keep the file private unless you have clear permission to share it. Do not upload recordings automatically.
Writing
Write a short email of about 80–100 words to a fictional friend about your weekend plan. Use at least three first conditional sentences.
Simple structure
- Greeting and plan
- Two or three possible conditions and consequences
- Your opinion with one reason
- Friendly ending
Useful language: If ..., I’ll ... / I think ... because ... / Maybe ... / I hope ...
Do not copy a model text word for word. Your own message is the learning goal.
Optional mediation
Your German-speaking school club gives this notice: „Bei Regen findet das Training in der Halle statt. Wenn du später kommst, melde dich zuerst bei der Lehrkraft.“
A new English-speaking student asks what is important. Give the key information in simple English. Do not translate every word.
Possible start: If it rains, ...
Safe and smart use of AI
You may use an AI tool only if your school or teacher allows it. First write your own sentence. Then you can ask for a grammar check.
Check the AI result:
- Is the language suitable for your level?
- Is the first conditional pattern correct?
- Did the tool change your meaning?
- Can you explain the correction yourself?
Do not enter private names, contact data, social-media accounts, recordings or other personal data. AI feedback should help you improve your text, not replace it.
Quick transfer
Look at the timetable image above. Choose a school day and make three realistic plans.
Example: If our last lesson finishes early, I’ll go to the library.
Now change the context:
- school → free time
- free time → family plan
- family plan → weather problem
Keep the grammar pattern, but change the meaning.
Can-do check
| I can ... | Yes | Almost | Not yet |
|---|---|---|---|
| understand a possible future condition | □ | □ | □ |
| use present simple after if | □ | □ | □ |
| use will + base verb for the consequence | □ | □ | □ |
| connect two ideas and give a reason | □ | □ | □ |
| find and correct a common error | □ | □ | □ |
If you tick Almost or Not yet, return to Try → ask → hint → German help and do one more example.
Language scope for G level
Your productive focus here is the first conditional. If a text or video contains a passive form or a past perfect form, you only need to understand it from context; you do not have to produce it in this course. Reported speech is not a production target here. Receptive forms should not be forced into your speaking or writing.
