E7 G - Explain a school or leisure activity

Look first. Don't translate.

What can you see?

  1. A sports hall?
  2. A school?
  3. A place for an activity?

Your mission: Explain a German school or leisure activity to a fictional English-speaking person. Use short, clear English.

Einleitung

You meet Sam. Sam is fictional and speaks English. Sam wants to know about an activity in Germany.

Sam asks:

“What is the activity? When is it? Where is it? What do you do there? What do I need?”

You learn useful chunks for a short answer.

English first → try → use the picture or context → get a hint → use German help only if you need it.

I can ...

  1. I can name a school or leisure activity.
  2. I can say when and where it is.
  3. I can say what people do there.
  4. I can say what people need.
  5. I can give a simple reason with because.
  6. I can explain the main information in short connected sentences.

Before you start

Say or think of three activities you know.

Examples: football, chess, music.

Picture task: What activity is this?

Hint: You use black and white pieces.

German help if needed: Schach.

Notice: school and leisure activities

An activity can be at school or in your free time.

A German school may offer an AG. An AG is an extra activity. It is often after lessons. Examples can be music, sport, drama, chess or a school newspaper.

A leisure activity can also take place at a sports club, library or youth centre.

Notice the useful questions:

  1. What is it?
  2. When is it?
  3. Where is it?
  4. What do you do?
  5. What do you need?
  6. Why do you like it?

Understand: a model

School activity: Football Club

“Our football club is on Wednesday. It starts at 3:30 p.m. We meet in the sports hall. We practise football and play short matches. You need sports clothes and trainers. I like the club because it is fun.”

Quick check:

What day is it? → Wednesday

Where do they meet? → in the sports hall

What do they need? → sports clothes and trainers

Word bank

English Simple meaning
activity Aktivität / Angebot
club AG / Gruppe / Verein
meet sich treffen
start beginnen
practise üben / trainieren
need brauchen
sports hall Sporthalle
youth centre Jugendzentrum
trainers Sportschuhe
because weil

Do not learn every word at once. Use the words you need for your activity.

Listening and Viewing

First viewing: no transcript.

Watch a short part and listen for familiar words about free time and hobbies.

Watch 0:32–3:15 first.

Your task:

  1. Name two activities you hear or see.
  2. Listen for one phrase with I like ...
  3. Listen again. Add one detail.

Hint: You do not need to understand every word.

German help if needed: Achte nur auf Aktivitäten, Vorlieben und kleine Zusatzinformationen.

Second media task: vocabulary with pictures

Choose five words that you can really use. Do not copy a long list.

Make five short sentences:

“I like ...”

“I play ...”

“I go ...”

“I do ...”

“My favourite activity is ...”

Mini listening script after your first try

Read this only after you tried listening.

“Hi Sam. I go to a chess club at school. We meet on Thursday after lessons. We play chess in a classroom. You only need a chess set at the club. I like it because I can play with friends.”

Check:

  1. Activity: chess club
  2. Day: Thursday
  3. Place: classroom
  4. Reason: playing with friends

Reading

Read Sam's message.

“Hi! I am new here. I want to try an activity after school. I like sport, but I do not have special equipment. I am free on Wednesday. Can you tell me about one activity?”

Find three important facts about Sam.

  1. Sam likes sport.
  2. Sam has no special equipment.
  3. Sam is free on Wednesday.

Now choose useful information for Sam. You do not need to explain everything.

Vocabulary in context

Look at the picture.

Complete the chunks in your head:

“People play table tennis.”

“They meet in a sports hall.”

“They need bats and a ball.”

“It is fun.”

Now change only one part:

“They play football.”

“They meet outside.”

“They need trainers.”

Pronunciation

Your goal is clear speech, not a perfect accent.

Say these chunks slowly first:

after school

on Wednesday

in the sports hall

you need trainers

because it is fun

Now connect them:

“Our club is on Wednesday. We meet in the sports hall.”

Tip: Stress the important words: Wednesday, sports hall, trainers, fun.

Try again at a natural speed.

Functional grammar

You only need a few patterns.

Function Pattern Example
Name the activity It is ... It is a chess club.
Say the time It is on ... / It starts at ... It is on Thursday.
Say the place We meet in / at ... We meet in the sports hall.
Say what you do We ... We play football.
Say what you need You need ... You need trainers.
Give a reason I like it because ... I like it because it is fun.
Say what is possible You can ... You can meet new people.

Notice: Use the simple present for regular activities.

“We meet every Wednesday.”

“Sam plays football.”

Use can + base form:

“You can join.”

“You can play.”

Try: build your explanation

Choose one:

school club – sports club – music group – chess club – youth centre activity – reading club

Use this frame:

“Hi Sam. The activity is __________. It is on __________. It starts at __________. We meet at/in __________. We __________. You need __________. I like it because __________.”

Level 1 help: Use the word bank.

Level 2 help: Copy the sentence starters.

Level 3 help: Read the model again and change only the key information.

Speaking

30-second speaking task

Explain one activity to Sam.

Use at least four points:

  1. activity
  2. time
  3. place
  4. action
  5. things you need
  6. reason

Partner feedback:

“Good: I understood __________.”

“One more detail: __________?”

Try again. Make your second version clearer.

Speaking safety

You may practise without recording.

If you record yourself, keep the recording private unless you freely choose to share it in a safe school setting.

Do not upload private recordings, names, locations or personal social-media information.

Writing

Write 5–7 short sentences.

Writing frame:

“Hi Sam,

I want to tell you about __________.

It is on __________.

We meet __________.

We __________.

You need __________.

I like it because __________.

Would you like to try it?”

Word bank: fun – interesting – easy – active – creative – friends – after school – sports hall – classroom – youth centre.

Direct feedback check

Check your text.

  1. Did you name the activity?
  2. Did you give a day or time?
  3. Did you give a place?
  4. Did you say what people do?
  5. Did you use need or can?
  6. Did you use because?

If one answer is “no”, improve one sentence.

Mediation: German information → simple English

You do not need a full translation.

Fiktiver deutscher Aushang:

“Basketball-AG: mittwochs, 15:30–16:30 Uhr, Sporthalle. Sportsachen und Hallenschuhe mitbringen. Anfängerinnen und Anfänger sind willkommen.”

Tell Sam the important information in simple English.

Try first.

Hint: Use only five chunks:

“Basketball club ...”

“on Wednesday ...”

“at 3:30 ...”

“sports hall ...”

“sports clothes and trainers ...”

Possible answer:

“The basketball club is on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. It is in the sports hall. You need sports clothes and trainers. Beginners can join.”

Media comparison

Choose one picture.

Say four sentences:

“This is a __________ activity.”

“People __________.”

“You need __________.”

“I would / would not like to try it because __________.”

Mini-transfer

Sam asks a new question:

“Is the activity good for a new student?”

Answer in two or three sentences.

Possible chunks:

“Yes, because ...”

“You can ...”

“You can meet ...”

“You do not need ...”

Improve and use again

Your first answer does not need to be perfect.

Use this cycle:

Notice → understand → try → use → communicate → feedback → improve → use again

Now explain the same activity again in fewer, clearer words.

Self-check: Can do

I can ... Yes A bit Not yet
name an activity □ □ □
say when it is □ □ □
say where it is □ □ □
say what people do □ □ □
say what people need □ □ □
give a reason with because □ □ □
speak for about 30 seconds □ □ □

If you tick Not yet, use the model and try one more time.

Responsible use of AI

AI can give you ideas or simple feedback, but check the level.

  1. Keep your own message and your own ideas.
  2. Ask for short A1–A2 / Klasse-7-friendly feedback.
  3. Check whether the suggested English is really understandable.
  4. Do not let AI replace your whole text.
  5. Do not send private recordings, names, addresses or social-media data to external AI services.
