Say the sentence slowly, then naturally:

This book is better than that book.

Pronunciation focus: Make better clear. In normal speech, than is often short and unstressed. Clear meaning is more important than copying one accent.

The useful forms

Use a comparative when you compare two people, things, places or activities.

Base adjective	Comparative	Example
small	smaller	My bag is smaller than your bag.
nice	nicer	This park is nicer than that car park.
big	bigger	The blue box is bigger than the red box.
happy	happier	Leo is happier today than yesterday.
interesting	more interesting	The new story is more interesting than the old one.
good	better	The second idea is better than the first idea.
bad	worse	The weather is worse today than yesterday.

Notice the spelling:

1. short → shorter: usually add -er
2. nice → nicer: final e + r
3. big → bigger: double the final consonant in common short patterns
4. happy → happier: consonant + y changes to i
5. interesting → more interesting: many longer adjectives use more
6. good → better and bad → worse: learn these forms as chunks

Do not use two comparative markers together: say bigger, not more bigger.

Than joins the comparison

than tells us what the first thing is compared with.

Maya's bike is faster than Ben's bike.

The library is quieter than the sports hall.

This puzzle is more difficult than the first puzzle.
