E6 G - Understand a short digital message

Mini description: Understand a short digital message. Find the sender, the reason and the most important information.

Target group: English as a first foreign language, Klasse 6, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

Learning route: Notice → understand → practise → use → feedback → use again.

Language help: Try English first → Hint → German help → example → solution.

I can ...

At the end, you can say:

  1. I can find the sender.
  2. I can say why the message was sent.
  3. I can find key information like time, place and action.
  4. I can answer a short message.

Media start

Look at the picture.

Think: Where do you see short digital messages?

Hint: phone – tablet – computer

German help: Wo siehst Du kurze digitale Nachrichten?

Example: I see messages on my phone.

Quick check: What do you know?

Read the words.

sender – time – place – message – reply

Which words do you know?

Hint: Look for words that are similar to German or that you know from apps.

German help: Markiere zuerst bekannte Wörter. Du musst nicht alles verstehen.

Notice: What is important in a message?

A short message often gives you three important things:

  1. Who? Who sends the message?
  2. Why? Why does the person write?
  3. What? What do you need to know or do?

Sometimes you also need:

  1. When? time or day
  2. Where? place

Read a first message

Fictional message:

From: Mia
Hi Leo! Football practice is at 4:30 today. Meet me at the sports hall at 4:20. Bring your water bottle. See you!
Mia

Try English first:

Who sends the message?

Hint: Look at “From”.

German help: Wer ist der Absender?

Example: The sender is ...

Solution: The sender is Mia.

Why does Mia write?

Hint: football practice

German help: Warum schreibt Mia?

Solution: She gives information about football practice.

What are the key details?

Solution: 4:30, sports hall, 4:20, water bottle.

Picture support

When you read a message, do not translate every word.

Good reading strategy:

  1. Read the sender.
  2. Find names, times and places.
  3. Find the action word.
  4. Read again.

German help: Suche zuerst Schlüsselwörter. Eine vollständige Übersetzung ist nicht nötig.

Listen and repeat

Word: message

Listen more than once if you want.

Say: message

Tip: Clear speech is more important than a perfect accent.

German help: Sprich verständlich. Akzentfreiheit ist nicht das Ziel.

Audio input

Ask a teacher or partner to read this message slowly two times. You may listen again.

Hi Sam. This is Ben. The school music club starts at three fifteen today. We meet in room twelve. Please bring your music folder. See you there!

First listening: Who is speaking?

Second listening: Find the time, place and thing to bring.

Hint: Listen for names and numbers.

German help: Höre zuerst auf Namen und Uhrzeit.

Solution: Ben – 3:15 – room 12 – music folder.

Words in context

English Easy meaning German help
sender the person who sends the message Absender
meet come together sich treffen
bring take something with you mitbringen
today this day heute
reply answer a message antworten

Example: Please bring your book.

Example: Meet me at the library.

Understand a second message

From: Noah
Hi Ava! The library club is not in Room 8 today. We are in Room 5. It starts at 2:45. Please tell Finn too. Thanks!
Noah

Who? Noah.

Why? He gives new information.

What? Room 5, 2:45, tell Finn.

German help: Achte auf die Änderung: not Room 8 → Room 5.

A useful mini-pattern

Short messages often use simple chunks:

Meet me at ...

Please bring ...

It starts at ...

Can you ... ?

Use these chunks. You do not need a long grammar rule.

Example: Can you bring your English book?

German help: Nutze fertige Satzbausteine. So kannst Du schnell selbst schreiben.

Pronunciation practice

Say the short chunks.

  1. Meet me at four.
  2. Please bring your book.
  3. See you there.

Clap once on the important word:

MEET me at four.

Please BRING your book.

See you THERE.

Feedback: Was your message easy to understand? That is the main goal.

Speaking

Work with a partner.

Student A says:

Hi! Art club is at three today. Meet me in Room 6. Bring a pencil.

Student B answers:

OK. Three o’clock, Room 6, and a pencil. See you!

Sentence starters:

The sender is ...

The message is about ...

I need to ...

German help: Wiederhole die wichtigsten Informationen. So zeigst Du, dass Du verstanden hast.

Reading

Read this short message.

From: Ms Green
Hello class. Tomorrow we meet in the computer room, not in our classroom. Please bring your headphones. The lesson starts at 8:00 as usual.
Ms Green

Answer in short English:

  1. Who sends the message?
  2. When is the lesson?
  3. Where do they meet?
  4. What should students bring?

Hint: Find the name, time, place and object.

German help: Suche Name, Zeit, Ort und Gegenstand.

Solution: Ms Green – 8:00 – computer room – headphones.

Short writing output

Write a message with 3–4 short sentences.

Use fictional data only.

Task: Tell a friend about a school club.

Word bank: today – tomorrow – at – room – meet – bring – please – see you

Sentence starters:

Hi ... !

The ... club starts at ...

Meet me in / at ...

Please bring ...

See you!

Example:

Hi Mia! The chess club starts at 3:30 today. Meet me in Room 4. Please bring a pencil. See you!

Check:

Is the sender clear?

Is the reason clear?

Are the key details clear?

Optional mediation

Your friend understands little English.

Message:

Hi! Bus 12 leaves at 7:40 tomorrow. Meet me at the bus stop at 7:30. Bring your school ticket.

Tell your friend the key information in short German.

Hint: Do not translate every word.

German help: Gib nur die wichtigen Informationen weiter.

Example solution: Bus 12 fährt morgen um 7:40 Uhr. Treffen ist um 7:30 Uhr an der Bushaltestelle. Du brauchst Dein Schulticket.

Safe digital learning

Use fictional names and data in this course.

You do not need to upload private messages, photos or voice recordings.

Recording your voice is optional and should stay private unless you choose otherwise.

If you use AI for practice, check the answer and write your own final message.

German help: Keine privaten Chats ungefragt hochladen. Prüfe KI-Ausgaben und formuliere selbst.

Feedback

After your writing, use this quick feedback:

Green: I can understand it easily.

Yellow: One detail is missing.

Red: I need more help.

Try again after feedback.

Use again: Change one detail in your message: time, place or thing to bring. Give it to a partner to read.

Can-do check

Choose for yourself:

Yes / Almost / Not yet

  1. I can find the sender.
  2. I can find the reason for the message.
  3. I can find time and place.
  4. I can understand what I need to do.
  5. I can write a short clear reply.

If you choose Almost or Not yet, read one message again and use the hints.

Follow-up course

Next step: E6 G - Reply to a short digital message

There you practise short answers such as:

Yes, I can.

Sorry, I can’t.

What time?

Where do we meet?
