E10 M - Use sequences of adverbials effectively
E10 M - Use sequences of adverbials effectively
Mini-Beschreibung: Ordne mehrere Angaben zu time, place, manner beziehungsweise other circumstances in verständlicher englischer Reihenfolge und überprüfe Wirkung und Klarheit.

Look first: What can the clock add to a sentence? Think of one useful time adverbial.
Add place: Where could an action happen? Build one sentence with a clear place adverbial.

Add manner: How can someone move, speak or work? Add a suitable manner adverbial.
Einleitung
You already know many adverbs and adverbial phrases. In this unit, you use them more effectively: you decide what information matters, put several adverbials into a natural order and revise sentences when the result sounds unclear or heavy.
A useful neutral pattern for several end-position adverbials is:
manner → place → time
Example: The team worked carefully in the library after school.
This is a useful default, not a rule for every sentence. Speakers and writers can move an adverbial to the front for focus, and frequency adverbs such as usually often have a different position.
I-can-Ziele
- I can identify adverbials of manner, place, time, reason, purpose and frequency.
- I can use manner → place → time as a useful default order.
- I can move an adverbial to the front when I want to change focus.
- I can explain why one word order is clearer than another.
- I can revise my own speaking and writing for clarity.
- I can give and use short peer feedback in English.
Vorwissen: quick check
Sort these chunks in your head: carefully – at the station – after lunch – because the bus was late – to save time – usually.
Ask:
- How? → manner
- Where? → place
- When? → time
- Why? → reason
- What for? → purpose
- How often? → frequency
Understand: functional grammar
What is an adverbial?
An adverbial gives extra information about an action, situation or whole sentence. It can be one word, a phrase or a clause.
| Function | Question | Example |
|---|---|---|
| manner | How? | carefully |
| place | Where? | in the media room |
| time | When? | after school |
| reason | Why? | because the deadline was close |
| purpose | What for? | to finish the report |
| frequency | How often? | usually |
A useful default order
When several adverbials come after the verb, this order is often clear:
manner → place → time
We practised quietly in the hall after lunch.
With an extra reason or purpose, it often comes later:
We practised quietly in the hall after lunch because the presentation was important.
We met calmly in the library after school to solve the problem.

Media task: Describe an imagined meeting connected with the world clock. Include manner, place and time in one sentence.
Change the focus
You can front an adverbial when it gives important context.
After school, we practised quietly in the hall.
At the station, we waited calmly for the next train.
The basic information is similar, but the opening changes what the listener notices first.
Do not force the default order when another order is clearer.
Important exceptions
Frequency adverbs often stand before the main verb:
We usually meet after school.
With be, they often stand after the verb:
The room is usually quiet.
Sentence adverbials such as fortunately, probably or in my view comment on the whole message and do not simply follow manner → place → time.
Fortunately, we arrived at the station on time.
Listening and Viewing
B1 viewing: notice the pattern
Watch the sections on manner, place and time. While watching, write down three model sentences. Then mark each adverbial with M, P or T. Listen for natural Standard English and focus on meaning before terminology.
Second explanation: compare
Compare the examples with the default pattern in this course. Find one sentence in which a speaker uses another position for focus or sentence structure.
Optional refresher
Use this shorter support if you want to review manner, place and time before continuing.
Reading
Fictional profile: media-team project
Maya is a fictional Year 10 student. She is preparing a short school podcast with two classmates. On Tuesdays, they usually meet in the media room after lessons. They plan their questions carefully there for about twenty minutes. Last week, they recorded a test interview quietly in an empty classroom because another group was working next door. Afterwards, they checked the recording together at school to improve the sound. For the final version, Maya wants to speak clearly and naturally so that listeners can follow every point.
Reading task: Find at least six adverbials. Label their function. Then choose one sentence and change the position of one adverbial. Explain the effect.
Context vocabulary
| Word or phrase | Useful meaning in this unit | Example |
|---|---|---|
| carefully | with attention | check carefully |
| clearly | in an easy-to-understand way | explain clearly |
| naturally | without sounding forced | speak naturally |
| after lessons | time | meet after lessons |
| in the media room | place | work in the media room |
| because | introduces a reason | because time was short |
| to improve | introduces a purpose | to improve the result |
| usually | frequency | usually meet |
Pronunciation and fluency
Do not try to stress every word equally. In longer sentences, speak in meaning groups.
We worked carefully | in the media room | after school.
Clarity is more important than accent imitation. Practise once slowly, then again at a natural speed. Recording yourself is optional; keep recordings private unless you deliberately choose to share them.
Speaking
Negotiate a plan
Work with a partner. You are planning a fictional school event. Agree on:
- how you will prepare
- where you will meet
- when you will meet
- why one choice is better
Use at least three sentences with more than one adverbial. React spontaneously to one change suggested by your partner.
Useful feedback: Your sentence is clear. I would move the time phrase to the front. The place phrase is easy to follow. That order sounds heavy. Can you simplify it?
Writing
From basic to effective
Start with:
We will work.
Add information step by step:
We will work carefully.
We will work carefully in the library.
We will work carefully in the library tomorrow afternoon.
Then revise for purpose:
We will work carefully in the library tomorrow afternoon to finish the article.
Write four sentences for a fictional school project. At least two sentences should contain three different adverbials. Then revise one sentence by fronting time or place.
Formal and informal register
Compare:
Informal message: We can meet quickly at school after lunch.
More formal project email: We can meet briefly in the library after lunch to review the final draft.
The grammar is similar, but word choice and register change.
Do not use real names, addresses, application data or private documents. If you practise a CV, profile or application, use fictional information only.
Mediation
A German school notice says: Das Vorbereitungstreffen findet am Donnerstag nach dem Unterricht in Raum 204 statt. Bitte arbeitet ruhig, weil im Nachbarraum eine Prüfung geschrieben wird.
Give the essential information in English for a fictional exchange student. Do not translate every word. Adapt the message to the purpose and listener. Aim for a clear order of place, time and manner.
Analyse: why does order matter?
Compare:
She explained the task yesterday clearly in class.
She explained the task clearly in class yesterday.
The second version follows the useful default manner → place → time and is easier to process in neutral context.
Now compare:
Yesterday, she explained the task clearly in class.
This version is also natural. It highlights the time frame first.
The goal is not to memorise one rigid formula. The goal is to choose an order that helps the listener or reader understand the message quickly.
Feedback → revise
Use this short revision loop:
- Meaning: Is every adverbial necessary?
- Order: Is the sequence easy to follow?
- Focus: Should time or place move to the front?
- Register: Does the sentence fit the situation?
- Sound: Can you say the sentence in clear meaning groups?
- Revision: Keep the better version and explain one change.
Fehleranalyse
Problem: too many details compete with each other.
We discussed after lunch carefully because the deadline was close in the library the article.
Better:
We discussed the article carefully in the library after lunch because the deadline was close.
Problem: frequency is forced into the end-position pattern.
We meet in the library after school usually.
Better:
We usually meet in the library after school.
Problem: a rule is followed even when emphasis would be clearer.
We practised quietly in the hall on Friday.
Possible revision:
On Friday, we practised quietly in the hall.
Transfer

Imagine that you are giving directions for a fictional meeting in London. Build one clear sentence with how, where and when. Then build a second version that begins with the time phrase. Decide which version fits a travel message better.
Responsible use of tools and AI
Digital tools can help you check grammar, but they can also suggest awkward or incorrect sentences.
- Keep your own first draft.
- Check AI-generated language against reliable sources and your course rules.
- Do not upload private recordings, real applications, personal data or school documents without permission.
- Do not use external AI services if your learning setting does not allow them.
- Record what you changed and why.
- Prefer understandable English to impressive but unclear wording.
Curriculum and exam check
Checked on 2 October 2026. The current Baden-Württemberg curriculum for English as the first foreign language, Klasse 10, M-Niveau explicitly includes sequence of adverbials as a productive grammar target. The curriculum for the Mittlerer Schulabschluss is oriented to B1, partly B1+.
