E10 M - Meine Englisch-Kompetenzen Klasse 10 diagnostizieren

Einleitung

Mini-Beschreibung: Find out where you are strong and where you still need practice in listening, reading, speaking, writing, mediation, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. This diagnostic course is for Klasse 10, M-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg and is B1-oriented.

Your route: English first → understand → respond → analyse → communicate → feedback → revise → transfer.

Do not translate everything. Work with meaning, context and purpose. Use German only when a mediation task asks for it.

Media warm-up: Watch part of the B1 speaking example. What makes communication successful: perfect grammar, or clear ideas, interaction and understandable language? Note three observations.

Privacy and AI: Use only fictional profiles and applications. Audio recordings are optional and should stay private. Do not upload personal recordings or texts without a clear reason and permission. External AI tools are not required. If you use AI support elsewhere, check facts and sources, mark the support and keep your own original text so that your learning progress stays visible.

I-can goals

Skill I can ...
Listening understand the main idea, important details and speaker attitude in natural standard English.
Reading find explicit and implicit information in longer B1-oriented texts.
Speaking discuss, negotiate, present and react spontaneously.
Writing write clear formal and informal texts for a purpose and audience.
Mediation pass on relevant meaning for a specific person instead of translating word for word.
Vocabulary use context, collocations and topic vocabulary to express ideas.
Grammar use familiar structures accurately and more complex structures when they help communication.
Pronunciation speak clearly enough to be understood, using useful stress and intonation.

Vorwissen: Quick start

Without a dictionary, write 60–80 words in English: What is one skill you will need after school, and why? Then speak about the same question for about one minute. Keep both versions. You will compare them with your revised work later.

Diagnose: Listening and Viewing

Watch the BBC Learning English video in natural standard English.

  1. First viewing – gist: What is the main problem shown in the example?
  2. Second viewing – detail: Note three differences between formal and informal English.
  3. Analyse: Why can register change the impression you make?
  4. Transfer: Give one situation where informal English works and one where formal English is safer.

Self-check: If you understand the main idea but miss several details, practise listening for detail. If the speed is the main problem, practise natural-speed listening with short repeated sections.

Diagnose: Reading

Fictional diagnostic text – read without translating every word.

Work Experience: More Than One Week Away from School

Last spring, 16-year-old Jordan Lee completed a one-week placement at a small local media company. At first, Jordan expected to spend most of the time watching other people work. Instead, the team asked Jordan to help prepare short social-media texts, check information for a newsletter and organise material for a meeting.

The first day was difficult because the staff used several unfamiliar expressions and worked faster than Jordan was used to at school. Jordan began writing key words instead of complete notes and asked short questions when instructions were unclear. By the third day, the work felt easier.

The most useful task was checking two online sources for a short article. One source looked professional but did not say where its numbers came from. The second linked to an official report. Jordan learned that a good-looking website is not automatically a reliable source.

At the end of the week, the supervisor praised Jordan's questions and careful work but suggested using more precise English in formal e-mails. Jordan now plans to practise professional vocabulary and to write shorter, clearer messages before the next placement.

  1. Understand: Summarise the text in two English sentences.
  2. Respond: Name two problems Jordan had and how Jordan reacted.
  3. Analyse: What does the text suggest about reliable sources?
  4. Evidence: Find one detail that shows Jordan became more independent.

Self-check: If you find the gist but not implied meaning, continue with reading strategies. If unknown words block you, continue with context vocabulary.

Kontextwortschatz

Use the reading context before opening a dictionary. Explain these words in simple English or give a close synonym: placement – reliable – source – supervisor – precise – instructions.

Then build three useful collocations, for example with meet, apply, reliable, take, give.

Diagnostic question: Can you paraphrase when one word is missing? If not, practise paraphrasing and collocations.

Aussprache und Verständlichkeit

Listen for the schwa and for unstressed grammar words. Then say:

I would have applied for the placement if I had known about it earlier.

Say it once slowly and once at a natural pace. Recording is optional and private.

Check:

  1. Are the important content words easy to hear?
  2. Does your voice show where the sentence continues and ends?
  3. Can another person understand you without seeing the sentence?

Goal: Verständlichkeit vor Akzentfreiheit. A noticeable accent is not a problem if meaning stays clear.

Next step: word stress, sentence stress and intonation.

Speaking: Discuss, Negotiate, Present

Pair task: A fictional school can offer only one new project: a weekly careers workshop or a student media project. Discuss both options and agree on one.

Use natural interaction:

  1. react to your partner;
  2. ask a follow-up question;
  3. disagree politely once;
  4. suggest a compromise;
  5. summarise the final decision.

Then give a two-minute talk about one skill you want to improve before leaving school. Use notes, not a full script. After that, answer one spontaneous follow-up question.

Next step: If you can present but not react spontaneously, choose dialogue and discussion. If structure is difficult, choose two-minute presentation practice.

Writing: Register, Application and Opinion

All profiles and applications in this course are fictional.

Main writing task: Write 150–170 words for your school website: Should every Year 10 student complete work experience? Give your opinion, include one counterargument and refer to the reading text with a phrase such as According to the text ....

Then complete the genre switch:

  1. Write a 60–80 word formal e-mail from fictional student Alex Morgan asking a company about a work-experience place.
  2. Rewrite one key message as a short informal e-mail to a friend.
  3. Create only the headings and three fictional entries for Alex's CV: education, skills, experience.

Check purpose – audience – register – structure – linking – evidence – accuracy.

Next step: writing, formal e-mail, application and CV or opinion and source reference.

Mediation: Meaning for a Purpose

German source:

Am Donnerstag findet an der fiktiven Linden-Schule ein Berufsorientierungstag statt. Beginn ist um 8:30 Uhr in der Aula. Danach wählen die Jugendlichen zwei Workshops. Angeboten werden Bewerbungstraining, Medienberufe und technische Ausbildungswege. Für den Workshop Bewerbungstraining sollen die Teilnehmenden einen ausgedruckten fiktiven Lebenslauf mitbringen. Die Veranstaltung endet um 13:00 Uhr.

Situation: Your English-speaking exchange partner Sam wants to join but only needs information about time, place, choices and what to bring.

Write an 80–100 word English message to Sam. Do not translate every sentence. Select, reorganise and explain only what Sam needs.

Next step: If you translate too closely, continue with mediation by purpose and addressee.

Functional Grammar

Grammar helps communication. Test whether you can use it in context.

  1. Complete: If Jordan had ignored the source problem, ...
  2. Combine with a useful linker: The website looked professional. Its evidence was weak.
  3. Improve the register: I wanna know if you got any places.
  4. Correct the tense or form: If I would have known, I had applied earlier.

For Klasse 10 M, review familiar structures and especially useful complex links such as conditional clauses and clear sequencing.

Next step: grammar overview, third conditional and linking and sequencing.

Feedback, Fehleranalyse und Revision

Mark only the errors that help you learn:

Code Meaning Revision question
M meaning Is my message clear?
G grammar Which structure would express the idea better?
V vocabulary Is the word precise and natural in context?
R register Does the language fit audience and purpose?
S structure Is the text or talk easy to follow?
P pronunciation Could a listener understand the key words?

Choose three recurring errors. Correct them, explain the rule or strategy in your own words, then revise one paragraph or one spoken response. Keep the first version so you can see the change.

Transfer

Read one short section on the official English-language Baden-Württemberg website: Our State – Baden-Württemberg

Then:

  1. summarise it in three English sentences;
  2. identify the source and date if available;
  3. explain which information you would use for a visitor and which you would leave out;
  4. check one factual claim with a second reliable source.
