Red-hot steel ingots or billets enter the mill via Table A.The continuous billet is sheared for length at Table B. Three mills ("roughing mills") compress the steel into strips between 3.5 and 16.75 inches wide and 0.5 inches in depth.

Very roughly finished steel may then be slid sideways across Table L and R to the transfer table (Table U), where it cools and then is shipped out of the hot mill.

Steel may pass through another mill (Table E), and then moved off the line to the cold milling units. If little cold milling is needed, it is passed to Table L and then Table R, and cold milled by Mill No. 5. It is allowed to cool on Table M, and then sheared to the proper length before being passed to Table N where it is held prior to shipping.

If somewhat more cold milling is needed, the steel is passed only to Table L, and cold milled by Mills No. 3 and 4. The steel then may pass down Chute Q to await shipping.
