The communication exam is not about reciting a memorised speech. It tests whether you can understand a task, select relevant ideas, structure a long turn, react spontaneously and build a discussion with another person. For the 2027 Leistungsfach, connect language performance with well-founded course knowledge and independent analysis.

Official 2027 check, Stand 02.10.2026: Grundlage sind der Facherlass 2027 und die Beurteilungs- und Korrekturrichtlinien des Kultusministeriums Baden-Württemberg. Die offizielle Übersichtsseite führt diese Dokumente für den Abiturjahrgang 2027. Vor der eigenen Prüfung solltest Du prüfen, ob später eine aktualisierte Fassung veröffentlicht wurde.

I-can goals

After this aiMOOC, you can say:

  1. I can explain the difference between a single and a tandem communication exam.
  2. I can use the 15-minute preparation period efficiently and legally.
  3. I can structure an approximately five-minute monologue around a clear line of argument.
  4. I can co-construct a roughly ten-minute dialogue by reacting, challenging, developing and negotiating.
  5. I can distinguish content, interaction/discourse and language as assessment areas.
  6. I can connect a new visual, audio or written stimulus with course knowledge without reproducing memorised model answers.
  7. I can evaluate my own speaking with evidence and set one precise improvement target.

Vorwissen: quick diagnostic

Answer in English before reading on:

  1. What makes a five-minute long turn coherent rather than merely long?
  2. How can you disagree without blocking a discussion?
  3. Which evidence can you extract from a visual or a small data set?
  4. What should you do when you lack one word but still know the idea?
  5. Which is more useful in preparation: full sentences or a speaking map? Explain.

Prüfung 2027: Was ist verbindlich?

Tandemprüfung etwa 5 Minuten pro Person, nacheinander etwa 10 Minuten gemeinsamer Dialog mindestens 20 Minuten

Important: In the tandem, listen actively to your partner's long turn. You may take notes while listening, and the information can matter in the dialogue.

Ablaufdiagramm: from preparation to dialogue

15 min preparation → 5 min monologue → thematic bridge → 10 min dialogue → criteria-based assessment

For a tandem:

15 min individual preparation → Candidate A long turn → Candidate B long turn → joint dialogue

No partner contact during preparation. You prepare individually under supervision.

Vorbereitung: 15 minutes that matter

During the 15-minute preparation period you work silently on your own task. You may make written notes and use them in the exam. An English monolingual dictionary and an English-German/German-English bilingual dictionary are permitted; further aids are not.

Use this compact workflow:

  1. Decode the task: underline the operator and the issue.
  2. Read the stimulus: identify message, evidence, perspective and limitation.
  3. Activate context: add only course knowledge that clearly helps.
  4. Build a speaking map: opening claim, two or three developed points, mini-conclusion.
  5. Prepare interaction: write two questions, one counterpoint and one compromise phrase.
  6. Check language: choose precise topic vocabulary and useful connectors; do not script every sentence.

Prüfungsaufgaben und Impulse

Officially, tasks may use visual, auditory and audiovisual stimuli, quotations and theses. A German-language thesis can also be used in a mediation-related sense. The tasks for monologue and dialogue follow one thematic line. The 2027 Schwerpunktthema can be addressed, but excerpts from the mandatory canon are not used as communication-exam impulses.

2027 LF context: On the Move: Migration and Cross-Cultural Encounters plus the USA and UK topic fields named in the Facherlass. The exam still requires transfer to a new stimulus rather than reproduction of a prepared text.

Listening and Viewing

Viewing task: Watch a short section of the Cambridge speaking test. Do not copy phrases mechanically. Track three things: how a speaker enters a turn, how the partner reacts, and how an idea is extended with a reason or example.

Transfer to BW 2027: The format differs, but the interaction skills transfer: listen, respond to content, maintain the conversation and make your contribution relevant.

Datei:Six in six.webm

Optional listening: Select a 60–90 second section. Write only five keywords. Then retell the core idea and add one evaluative comment. This trains listening-to-speaking transfer without producing a transcript.

Reading: short stimulus, not a model answer

Read this original practice text:

A school exchange programme reports that students often describe mobility as an opportunity to become more independent. At the same time, some participants mention financial pressure, loneliness and the difficulty of entering already established social groups. The programme therefore plans to combine travel support with peer mentoring. Critics argue that short exchanges can create superficial impressions unless students reflect on power, privilege and local perspectives.

Task: Summarise the tension in one sentence. Then formulate one analytical claim and one evaluative question for a discussion.

Context vocabulary and word formation

Use English explanation first. Check a dictionary next. German help comes only if the concept is still unclear.

Base Related form Useful exam meaning Example
argue argument / argumentative a reasoned position The argument is convincing because…
cohere coherence / coherent logical connection of ideas A coherent response signals its line of thought.
interact interaction / interactive responding and building together Good interaction develops the partner's point.
persuade persuasion / persuasive making a case effectively The speaker uses a persuasive example.
migrate migration / migrant movement across places or borders The stimulus frames migration as both opportunity and challenge.
evaluate evaluation / evaluative judging by explicit criteria An evaluative answer weighs benefits against limitations.

Help ladder: English first

  1. Context: infer the meaning from the sentence, image or task.
  2. Word formation: identify root, prefix, suffix and word class.
  3. Visualisation: sketch the relation as cause → effect, claim → evidence or problem → response.
  4. English explanation: define the term in simple English.
  5. Dictionary: verify meaning, collocation and pronunciation.
  6. German help: use a short translation only if the previous steps fail.

Analysis: turn a stimulus into ideas

For a visual, avoid a pure description list. Move through:

observe → interpret → support with visual evidence → connect to context → evaluate significance

Useful LF questions:

  1. What is foregrounded, omitted or framed as normal?
  2. Which perspective does the stimulus invite?
  3. How do composition, scale, setting, caption or contrast shape meaning?
  4. Which course concept clarifies the stimulus?
  5. Where is the evidence insufficient for a strong conclusion?

Speaking

Monological speaking: a five-minute architecture

A strong long turn is not a mini-essay read aloud. Use a visible oral structure:

  1. Frame: identify the issue and formulate your main claim.
  2. Develop: explain two or three aspects with stimulus evidence and course context.
  3. Differentiate: include a limitation, tension or alternative reading.
  4. Conclude: answer the task directly and open a bridge to the dialogue.

Useful oral signposting: The key tension is… / What the stimulus suggests is… / This becomes more complex when… / A limitation of this view is… / Taken together…

Dialogical speaking: co-construct, do not alternate mini-speeches

Good dialogue means that your next move depends on what was just said.

Function English move
Build I would add to your point that…
Clarify Do you mean that…?
Challenge I see the logic, but does that still hold if…?
Compare Compared with the first option, this would…
Negotiate Could we agree on… while still recognising…?
Reframe Maybe the question is less about X and more about Y.

Avoid: memorised chunks that ignore the partner, repeated agreement without development, or waiting for the teacher to rescue the conversation.

Example impulse A: visual + dialogue

Practice only – not an official exam task.

Use the debate image above.

Monologue: Analyse how the image represents participation in a public discussion. Connect your analysis to one aspect of cross-cultural mobility or educational opportunity.

Dialogue: Your school can fund either a longer exchange for a small group or shorter virtual and physical encounters for a larger group. Discuss criteria, evaluate trade-offs and agree on a proposal.

Example impulse B: fictional data

FICTITIOUS DATA – created only for practice.

Main reason given for moving abroad Share in a fictional survey
Career opportunity 34 %
Study 27 %
Family 23 %
Climate or lifestyle 16 %

Monologue: Analyse what the data suggests about motives for mobility. Explain two limitations of the survey before connecting it to the 2027 topic context.

Dialogue: A city wants to support newcomers with only two priority measures. Discuss language support, housing advice, peer mentoring and cultural orientation. Agree on two priorities and justify your decision.

Example impulse C: thesis

Self-written practice thesis: Mobility can widen horizons, but it can also deepen inequalities.

Monologue: Explain the tension, develop two different perspectives and connect them to a relevant example or concept.

Dialogue: Negotiate which conditions make mobility more equitable without reducing the discussion to a simple pro/con list.

Writing: write to speak, not to submit an essay

During practice, write a speaking skeleton of no more than about 90 words:

  1. one-sentence thesis
  2. three evidence keywords
  3. two connectors
  4. one counterpoint
  5. one closing sentence
  6. two dialogue questions

Then speak without reading full sentences. The goal is retrieval and flexible formulation.

Mediation: only where it fits

For the 2027 Gymnasium communication exam, mediation is not a separate third exam section. However, the official rules allow, for example, a German-language thesis as a stimulus in a mediation-related sense. If this occurs, convey the relevant meaning and function in English; do not translate word for word.

Bewertung: three areas

The official 2027 criteria assess the overall performance across three areas:

Area What strong performance shows Training question
Task fulfilment / content relevant, accurate, coherent ideas; convincing development and structure Did I answer the exact task and support my claims?
Strategy / interactive conversation / discourse active contribution, spontaneous reaction, partner orientation, independent continuation Did my turn respond to and advance the discussion?
Language grammar and syntax, differentiated vocabulary, fluency, pronunciation, intonation and comprehensibility Was my English precise, fluent and easy to follow?

A completely insufficient performance in one of these three areas limits the overall result to at most 3 Notenpunkte.

Written exam vs communication exam

Do not confuse the parts:

2027 LF English Core format Share of the total result of the written Abitur examination
Listening unknown audio document, about 30 minutes 20 %
Writing reading, analysis and a further writing task, 225 minutes 55 %
Communication exam monological + dialogical speaking after 15 minutes preparation 25 %

The official document calls the communication exam the oral part of the written Abitur examination. This is different from a separate oral examination in a subject that has already been examined in writing.

Feedback, error analysis and improvement

Use a short feedback cycle after each simulation:

Evidence Feedback sentence Next action
Content Your strongest claim was… because… Add one more precise stimulus reference.
Interaction You reacted well when… Ask one follow-up question before changing topic.
Language You were easy to follow when… Replace one vague word with a precise collocation.
Fluency Your pauses were useful / disruptive when… Practise chunking, not faster speaking.

Error analysis: Categorise a problem before fixing it: task misunderstanding, missing evidence, weak structure, interaction breakdown, lexical gap, grammar pattern, pronunciation or time management. One precise diagnosis is more useful than I need to speak better.

Responsible AI and privacy

  1. Do your own analysis and speaking first; use AI, if your school permits it, for practice prompts or feedback rather than replacement answers.
  2. Check AI-generated facts and quotations against reliable sources.
  3. State AI use where school rules require it.
  4. Use fictional practice data unless a source is clearly documented.
  5. Recordings are voluntary. Keep them private or local unless everyone involved has explicitly agreed to sharing.
  6. Do not upload classmates' voices, images or personal data without consent.
  7. Do not connect external AI services to files, accounts or recordings unless you intentionally choose to do so and understand the data flow.

Differentiation

Help: Support uses a three-box plan: claim → evidence → explanation, five interaction phrases and a topic mini-glossary. Standard work removes these prompts gradually.

Language: Start with accurate high-frequency connectors, then move toward precise collocations, flexible syntax and differentiated evaluation language. Complexity only helps when it remains controlled and comprehensible.

Scope: Support focuses on one stimulus and two developed aspects. Standard work adds a counterargument and a limitation. LF stretch links several materials or concepts when relevant and expects greater breadth, depth and text/material complexity.

Analysis: Move from description to evidence-based interpretation; LF stretch distinguishes competing readings, evaluates source limitations and connects material independently.

Tempo: Start with a two-minute monologue + four-minute dialogue, then extend to exam timing without adding filler. At LF level, prioritise AFB II/III moves such as analysing, connecting, assessing and evaluating.

Transfer and Abi-Check

Before a full simulation, check:

  1. Can I explain the official timing without mixing up preparation and exam time?
  2. Can I create a five-minute structure from an unseen stimulus in 15 minutes?
  3. Can I use a dictionary selectively instead of losing time?
  4. Can I react to a partner's actual point within one sentence?
  5. Can I support an interpretation with visible or textual evidence?
  6. Can I add course knowledge without forcing a memorised paragraph into the task?
  7. Can I notice when a claim goes beyond the evidence?
  8. Can I finish with a concise answer or negotiated outcome?

Offene Aufgaben

Leicht

  1. Speaking Map: Create a one-page claim → evidence → explanation map for a fictional visual stimulus and speak for two minutes without reading full sentences.
  2. Interaction Phrases: Build a personal set of twelve phrases for building, challenging, clarifying and negotiating; test them in a short pair dialogue.
  3. Dictionary Drill: Choose six topic words and practise finding meaning, pronunciation, word class and one collocation quickly in a monolingual dictionary.
  4. Listening Notes: Watch 60–90 seconds of one embedded video, take only five keywords and retell the core point in English.

Standard

  1. Five-Minute Monologue: Use one example impulse from this aiMOOC, prepare for 15 minutes and record a private five-minute long turn only if you want to.
  2. Tandem Simulation: With a partner, run a ten-minute dialogue in which each turn must connect explicitly to the previous contribution.
  3. Visual Analysis: Analyse one Wikimedia Commons image using observe → interpret → evidence → context → evaluate, then compare your interpretation with a peer.
  4. Error Log: After a speaking task, classify three problems by cause and formulate one concrete action for each.

Schwer

  1. Material Link: Combine a visual stimulus, a short self-written data table and one course concept into a coherent five-minute response.
  2. Counterposition Drill: Develop two defensible interpretations of the same stimulus, then explain which evidence supports each and where each remains limited.
  3. Full Tandem Mock: Simulate the official sequence with separate 15-minute preparation, two long turns and a joint dialogue; use the three official assessment areas for peer feedback.
  4. Transfer Challenge: Create a new, copyright-safe practice impulse for the 2027 topic context, include fictional data, formulate monologue and dialogue tasks, and justify why they demand AFB II/III thinking.

Lernkontrolle

  1. Ablauf begründen: Explain why a 15-minute preparation strategy based on a speaking map is more flexible than writing a full manuscript. Apply your reasoning to a new stimulus.
  2. Interaktion analysieren: Read a short transcript of a fictional discussion and identify two moments where a speaker advances the dialogue and one where interaction breaks down. Rewrite the weak turn.
  3. Bewertung anwenden: Assess a fictional performance profile across content, interaction/discourse and language. Support each judgement with observable evidence rather than a general impression.
  4. Materialkritik: Given a small fictional data table, formulate one justified conclusion and two claims that would go beyond the evidence. Explain the difference.
  5. Prüfungsformen vergleichen: Compare single and tandem formats in terms of interaction demands and preparation needs without deciding that one format is generally better.
  6. Transfer 2027: Connect an unseen stimulus about mobility or identity to one relevant course concept, one limitation and one evaluative question for dialogue.

Lernnachweis

For a meaningful Lernnachweis, you should demonstrate:

  1. correct explanation of single and tandem exam timing
