Einleitung

ABI BF - Zehn Minuten zusammenhängend auf Englisch sprechen

Mini description: Develop a coherent talk of about ten minutes from a new source text and the task. Your four anchors are structure, textual evidence, contextual knowledge and conclusion. The course is designed for the English Basisfach in the Kursstufe in Baden-Württemberg.

English first: Try to understand instructions, examples and key terms in English. Use context, word families, visualisation and an English explanation before you use the short German rescue help.

Important: This course practises skills for an oral English exam. It becomes part of your Abitur only if English is actually chosen as the relevant oral examination subject.

Media entry – watch actively: Watch the British Council video once without stopping. Then name three things that make the presentation easy to follow. On a second viewing, collect useful phrases for opening, sequencing and closing.

Abi reality check: checked 2 October 2026

For Abitur 2027 in Baden-Württemberg, the official regulations for modern foreign languages state that the oral examination is based on a new authentic fictional or non-fictional text at the required level, usually about 200–300 words. The sheet can contain one to three tasks. The tasks should allow a coherent talk of about ten minutes. After preparation, the examination starts with an approximately ten-minute coherent presentation and continues with an examination discussion.

For the Basisfach, requirements from Anforderungsbereiche I and II have greater weight than Anforderungsbereich III. Monolingual and bilingual dictionaries are permitted during preparation; other aids are not. A compulsory canon work may be relevant as contextual knowledge, but it may not be the source text of the oral Basisfach or Leistungsfach examination.

Official check: Termine und Informationen zum Abitur and Facherlass Abitur 2027, Stand 09.09.2025.

If your examination year is 2028 or later, check the Facherlass for your own year again. Do not transfer the 2027 details automatically.

I-can goals

I can ... Evidence of learning
structure a ten-minute talk I can give the listener a clear route from opening to conclusion.
use textual evidence I can select precise details and explain what they show.
connect context I can add relevant course knowledge without drifting away from the source.
speak coherently I can link ideas, repair small problems and continue without reading a script.
conclude I can answer the task again in a concise final synthesis.

Prior knowledge: 60-second start

Speak for 60 seconds about a familiar course topic. Use only five keywords. Afterwards, check:

  1. Structure: Did the listener know where you were going?
  2. Evidence: Did you refer to a concrete example?
  3. Context: Did your background knowledge support the point?
  4. Conclusion: Did you finish the thought instead of simply stopping?

Deutschhilfe nur bei Bedarf: Die vier Fragen prüfen roten Faden, Beleg, passenden Kontext und einen echten Schluss.

The ten-minute route

This is a training route, not a fixed official minute-by-minute rubric. The wording of the task always comes first.

Training time Main job Useful question
0:00–0:45 Frame the task and give your route. What is the central issue and what will I show?
0:45–2:00 Give only the source information needed for the task. What must the listener know before my analysis?
2:00–6:30 Build two or three evidence chains. What does the text show, how does it show it and why does that matter?
6:30–8:45 Connect relevant contextual knowledge or transfer. Which course concept sharpens my interpretation?
8:45–10:00 Synthesize and conclude. What is my final answer to the task?

Memory aid: SECC = Structure – Evidence – Context – Conclusion.

Listening and Viewing

Use the Oxford Online English video as a listening source.

  1. First viewing: identify the overall presentation structure.
  2. Second viewing: note five signposting expressions.
  3. Transfer: replace one phrase with wording that sounds natural to you.

For an openly licensed German school resource, use Planet Schule: How to Give a Presentation in English Class. Use it as a model for speaking techniques, not as a script to memorise.

Reading: an unseen authentic text

The real examination skill is flexibility. Do not prepare one speech and force every text into it.

When your teacher gives you a legally provided authentic practice text of roughly examination length, work in this order:

  1. Read the task verbs first: for example outline, analyse, explain, assess, comment on, discuss.
  2. Mark the text's central claim, perspective or conflict.
  3. Select only evidence that helps answer the task.
  4. Add short margin labels such as contrast, example, tone, imagery, statistic, shift, appeal.
  5. Link one or two relevant pieces of contextual knowledge.
  6. Plan the conclusion before you start speaking.

Do not reproduce full copyrighted compulsory texts or unauthorised film sequences in your notes or uploads.

Context vocabulary and word formation

Try the English meaning and word family first. Use German only as a last resort.

Core word English explanation Word family Example Deutschhilfe
evidence a detail that supports a claim evident – evidently The contrast is evidence of the speaker's uncertainty. Beleg
analyse examine how parts create meaning or effect analysis – analytical I will analyse how the narrator frames the conflict. analysieren
argue present reasons for a position argument – argumentative The author argues that local action can change habits. argumentieren
imply suggest without stating directly implication – implicit The final image implies that the conflict is unresolved. andeuten
persuade try to make an audience accept or do something persuasion – persuasive The direct address makes the appeal more persuasive. überzeugen
interpret explain meaning using evidence interpretation – interpretive My interpretation is supported by the repeated metaphor. deuten
conclude bring reasoning to a final result conclusion – conclusive I would conclude that the text remains deliberately ambivalent. schlussfolgern

Dictionary strategy: If a word is unknown, first infer from sentence, paragraph and word family. Then use an English explanation. Only then check a bilingual dictionary if needed.

Analysis: from quotation hunting to evidence chains

A good analysis does more than name a technique. Think about speaker or writer – audience – purpose – context.

Use this compact chain:

Point → Evidence → Explanation → Context or Link

Invented micro-example for training only: “The student newspaper calls the new quiet study zone ‘a small rule with a surprisingly large effect’.”

A useful oral analysis could be: The phrase “small rule” initially minimises the measure, while “surprisingly large effect” creates a contrast. This makes the result sound more significant and helps the writer frame the change positively. In the context of debates about attention and digital habits, the wording shifts the focus from prohibition to perceived benefit.

The example is fictional and is not an authentic exam text.

The Toulmin model can help when the source contains an argument: identify a claim, the grounds supporting it and the often implicit warrant connecting both. Use the model only when it clarifies the task.

Speaking: make the listener hear your structure

Useful signposts:

Function Flexible phrase
opening The task asks me to focus on ... / I will first ..., then ..., and finally ...
moving to evidence A particularly relevant example is ... / This becomes clear when ...
explaining This suggests ... because ... / The effect on the reader is ...
adding context This can be connected to ... / A useful contextual point here is ...
qualifying However, the text does not simply ... / At the same time ...
concluding Overall, the evidence suggests ... / To return to the task ...

Do not learn the table word for word. Choose phrases you can use naturally and accurately.

After the BBC Learning English video, practise a repair strategy: if a word disappears, paraphrase it. If a sentence becomes too complex, finish it simply and continue.

Writing: notes, not a replacement essay

Prepare a cue-card plan instead of a full script.

Card Maximum content
1 task focus + thesis + route
2 evidence chain 1
3 evidence chain 2
4 context or transfer
5 conclusion + one backup link

A full written essay can make speaking less flexible. Your aim is to think in connected points and speak in complete sentences.

Optional mediation

Mediation is not word-for-word translation. Take a short German note supplied by your teacher and explain only the information an English-speaking listener needs for the stated purpose.

English first strategy: identify purpose → select content → rephrase → explain culture-specific terms → check relevance.

Deutschhilfe nur bei Bedarf: Vermittle sinngemäß und adressatengerecht; übersetze nicht Satz für Satz.

Basisfach differentiation

Basisfach practice should use manageable material, exemplary analysis and clear structure support. The goal is secure understanding, analysis and communication, not maximum density.

Support level Use
Scaffold Keep the SECC route visible, use a phrase bank and prepare two evidence chains.
Core Speak from keywords, connect evidence independently and add one relevant context link.
Extension Qualify interpretations, compare alternatives and respond to a more complex transfer question.

You may reduce language complexity before you reduce analytical clarity. A precise simple sentence is better than an ambitious sentence you cannot control.

Feedback and error analysis

Record yourself only if you want to. A private local audio recording is enough; no upload is required.

Check Typical problem Repair
Task focus long summary, little analysis underline the task verb and cut background that does not answer it
Evidence technique named without proof add one precise textual detail and explain its effect
Context memorised knowledge floats beside the text connect context with a sentence beginning “This helps explain ...”
Coherence separate points sound like a list use signposts and explicit links between claims
Timing conclusion disappears reserve the final minute and practise with a visible timer
Language one error causes a stop paraphrase, self-correct briefly and continue

Feedback rule: Give one comment on content, one on structure and one on language. Then choose only one repair target for the next attempt.

Responsible AI and privacy

Use fictitious names and data in self-created practice material. Recordings are voluntary and should remain private unless you deliberately choose otherwise. This MOOC never requires an upload or an external AI service.

If you use AI outside this MOOC, treat outputs as claims to check. Verify factual information and sources. Write and analyse independently. AI-generated replacement essays or fully scripted replacement speeches do not train the skill the examination requires.

Transfer: same method, new source

Use the same four anchors with a completely different authentic source:

  1. Structure: rebuild the route from the new task.
  2. Textual evidence: select new details rather than recycling old quotations.
  3. Contextual knowledge: choose only knowledge that actually clarifies this source.
  4. Conclusion: answer this task, not the previous one.

A useful transfer test is simple: If your speech still works after the source text is removed, it probably contains too little source-specific analysis.

Abi check

Before you call a practice run “exam-ready”, check:

Question Yes / not yet
Can I understand the task verbs before planning?
Can I speak from keywords rather than read a script?
Can I build at least two evidence chains?
Can I connect contextual knowledge directly to the text?
Can I keep enough time for a real conclusion?
Can I paraphrase when vocabulary fails?
Can I explain why my evidence matters?

Remember: The actual oral examination continues after the coherent presentation. Be ready to deepen, connect and qualify ideas in the following discussion.

Offene Aufgaben

Leicht

  1. One-minute route: Choose a familiar English-course topic and speak for 60 seconds using only five keywords and one signpost.
  2. Signpost hunt: Watch one embedded presentation video and collect six phrases. Sort them into opening, transition and conclusion.
  3. Word-family map: Create a small visual network for analyse, argue, interpret and conclude, including noun and adjective forms.
  4. Timer rehearsal: Speak for three minutes and mark where you spent too much or too little time.

Standard

  1. Two evidence chains: With a new teacher-provided authentic text, build two Point–Evidence–Explanation–Link chains and present them without a script.
  2. Context filter: Write down five course facts, then keep only the two that genuinely help explain the source. Justify your selection orally.
  3. Purpose-first mediation: Explain a short German school-related notice to an English-speaking exchange student without translating sentence by sentence.
  4. Private feedback loop: Give a five-minute practice talk, optionally record it privately, and revise one content problem and one language problem.

Schwer

  1. Ten-minute simulation: Use a new authentic text and one to three teacher-provided tasks. Prepare from keywords and deliver an approximately ten-minute coherent talk.
  2. Alternative interpretation: Present your main interpretation, then formulate a credible alternative and explain which textual details support or weaken it.
  3. New-source transfer: Apply the same SECC route to a source from a different semester topic and explain what had to change.
  4. Follow-up discussion: Ask a partner to challenge two of your claims. Respond by clarifying, qualifying or connecting them to another course context.

  1. Task redesign: You receive a talk plan with a long summary and almost no analysis. Restructure it for a task beginning with “Analyse how ...” and explain every change.
  2. Evidence test: Compare two analytical statements about the same source detail. Explain which statement establishes the clearer relation between evidence, effect and task.
  3. Context decision: Given three possible context links, explain which are relevant to a new source and which would distract from the task.
  4. Time trade-off: A speaker reaches minute eight before starting analysis point two. Decide what should be shortened, preserved or moved and justify the decision.
  5. Communication repair: Design three ways to continue speaking when an exact word, quotation or grammatical structure is unavailable.
  6. Transfer challenge: Take a structure built for a non-fictional article and adapt it to a fictional extract. Explain which analytical categories have to change.

Lernnachweis

For a learning record on this topic, show that you can:

  1. understand the task and identify its operator and focus.
  2. build a coherent route for an approximately ten-minute contribution.
  3. select precise evidence instead of retelling the whole source.
  4. explain meaning and effect and link details to an interpretation.
  5. use contextual knowledge selectively and connect it to the source.
  6. speak from notes with intelligible pronunciation, signposting and repair strategies.
  7. finish with a conclusion that answers the task.
  8. check sources and AI claims and keep the final analysis your own.
  9. handle recordings and data responsibly without compulsory uploads.
