ABI BF - Mündliche Englisch-Abiturprüfung verstehen

Mini description: Understand the structure of the oral English Abitur exam in the Basisfach: about 20 minutes of supervised preparation, about 10 minutes of independent speaking, followed by an exam discussion. This aiMOOC is for English as a continued foreign language in the Kursstufe at an allgemein bildendes Gymnasium in Baden-Württemberg. It applies only if English has been chosen as a mündliches Prüfungsfach.
English first: Work from context to word formation, visual clues, an English explanation and a dictionary check. Use short German help only when you still need it. Do not translate whole texts.
Einleitung
The oral exam is not a memorised presentation. You receive a fresh authentic fictional or non-fictional text, work with one to three tasks, prepare notes, speak coherently and then respond flexibly in a discussion. The exam is conducted in English.
Important distinction: This aiMOOC is about the oral Abitur examination in English as a Basisfach. It is not the separate Kommunikationsprüfung that belongs to a written modern-foreign-language Abitur examination.
Current official check, status 02 October 2026: The published rules for Abitur 2027 and 2028 use the same core structure: about 20 minutes of preparation and about 20 minutes of individual examination, beginning with an independent talk of about 10 minutes and followed by an exam discussion. For modern foreign languages, the authentic exam text is about 200 to 300 words, may be fictional or non-fictional, and the task contains one to three prompts. Works from the Pflichtkanon may not be the text basis of the oral exam, even though the wider Schwerpunkt and course contexts can be relevant.
For the Basisfach, the task is less complex than in the Leistungsfach. Reproduction and reorganisation, especially Anforderungsbereiche I and II, are more strongly weighted than Anforderungsbereich III. The official assessment framework is nevertheless shared across Basisfach and Leistungsfach; the expected performance differs through text complexity, breadth and depth of contextual knowledge, and task design.
Cohort check: For Abitur 2027, a monolingual English dictionary and a bilingual English-German/German-English dictionary are permitted during preparation. For Abitur 2028, the current Facherlass additionally permits a German spelling reference. No further aids are permitted. Always check the Facherlass for your own Abitur year and your school's instructions.

I can: Lernziele
By the end of this aiMOOC, you can say:
- I can explain the exam timeline without confusing it with the Kommunikationsprüfung.
- I can prepare a 200-to-300-word text efficiently by finding task focus, evidence and context.
- I can build a clear ten-minute talk with an opening, task-based main part and conclusion.
- I can analyse rather than retell by connecting language or structure to effect and meaning.
- I can respond in the discussion by clarifying, developing, qualifying and linking ideas.
- I can use dictionaries strategically without turning preparation into translation.
- I can check sources and AI-supported information and still produce my own analysis and wording.
Media start: What does effective speaking look like?
Datei:Presentation & public speaking skills.pdf
Watch for structure, audience orientation and clarity. The following video is not a Baden-Württemberg exam guide; use it as a speaking-skills input and transfer only what fits the oral exam.
Viewing task: Write down one idea about structure, one idea about clarity and one idea about audience focus. Then turn each idea into an exam action, for example: “I signpost my next step before I analyse the quotation.”
Vorwissen: Quick check
Before you continue, answer from memory:
- What is the difference between summary and analysis?
- What does an operator such as analyse, explain, assess or comment ask you to do?
- How do you support a claim with textual evidence without reading out long quotations?
- Which course topics could you connect to a new text?
- Which English phrases help you gain thinking time without switching to German?
If two or more questions feel difficult, use the structure aids in this aiMOOC before attempting a full mock exam.
Prüfungs-Timeline

The core rhythm is: about 20 minutes prepare → about 10 minutes speak → about 10 minutes discuss.
| Move the phase to the matching action. | Interactive exam timeline |
|---|---|
| Preparation | Read the authentic text, decode the task, mark evidence, build a speaking map and check only essential vocabulary. |
| Independent talk | Respond to the task in a coherent English monologue, using evidence, analysis and context. |
| Exam discussion | Deepen, qualify and connect ideas, respond to questions and move to wider course contexts. |
German help: Vorbereitung etwa 20 Minuten, selbstständiger Vortrag etwa 10 Minuten, danach Prüfungsgespräch; die gesamte Prüfung dauert ungefähr 20 Minuten.
The preparation room: 20-minute plan

Use a compact routine instead of writing a script.
| Time window | Your action | Product |
|---|---|---|
| First read | Read for gist and identify text type, speaker or author, issue and position. | One-sentence gist |
| Task read | Circle the operator and underline the exact focus. | Task target |
| Evidence pass | Mark two to four strong textual details. | Evidence bank |
| Analysis pass | Add the effect or meaning next to each detail. | Evidence-effect notes |
| Context pass | Add one or two relevant course connections. | Context bridge |
| Final minutes | Build a short opening, main-part route and conclusion. | Speaking map |
Do not write a replacement essay. Notes should help you speak freely. Aim for keywords, line references, arrows and short phrases.
Dictionary-first protocol

When a word blocks understanding, move through this order:
- Context: What does the surrounding sentence suggest?
- Word formation: Can you recognise a prefix, suffix or word family?
- Visualisation: Can you picture the relationship or action?
- English explanation: Can you define the idea in simple English?
- Dictionary: Check the precise meaning and usage.
- German rescue: Use a short German equivalent only if needed.
This keeps your thinking in English and saves preparation time.
Reading: From text to task
A Basisfach task should remain manageable, but it still asks you to do more than retell. Read with a three-pass method.
- Gist pass: Who is communicating what, to whom, and why?
- Task pass: Which parts of the text matter for the operator?
- Evidence pass: Which details best support your answer?
Exam-text rule: The official oral-exam basis is an authentic fictional or non-fictional text of about 200 to 300 words. The source and word count are given. Short factual notes and vocabulary help may be provided, but they should be kept to a minimum. A Pflichtkanon work cannot itself be the exam text.
Practice safely: Use a current authentic text legally provided by your teacher, an open-licensed source, or a publicly accessible source that may be linked but not copied in full. Do not upload protected exam materials to public platforms.

Operators: What kind of thinking is required?
| Operator | English first | Word family | Simple visual | German help |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| analyse | Break the material into relevant features and explain how they create meaning or effect. | analyse → analysis → analytical | detail → effect → meaning | untersuchen und deuten |
| explain | Make a relationship clear by giving reasons, causes or consequences. | explain → explanation → explanatory | cause → result | erklären |
| compare | Show important similarities and differences according to a clear criterion. | compare → comparison → comparable | A ↔ B | vergleichen |
| assess | Weigh evidence against criteria and reach a justified judgement. | assess → assessment | evidence → criteria → judgement | beurteilen |
| comment | State and support your own position on an issue. | comment → commentary | claim → reason → example | Stellung nehmen |
| contextualise | Connect the text to a wider historical, social, cultural or course context. | context → contextual → contextualise → contextualisation | text → wider topic | in Zusammenhang einordnen |
Kontextwortschatz

Learn flexible language, not entire scripts.
| Function | Useful English | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Introduce | The text focuses on... / The central issue is... | Gives a precise start |
| Signpost | I will first..., then..., and finally... | Makes structure audible |
| Evidence | This becomes clear when... / A key example is... | Anchors your point in the text |
| Analyse | This choice of words suggests... / The contrast highlights... | Moves from evidence to effect |
| Contextualise | This can be linked to... / In the wider context of... | Connects to course knowledge |
| Qualify | To some extent... / However, this depends on... | Avoids oversimplification |
| Clarify | If I understand the question correctly... / Could you please rephrase the question? | Keeps the discussion going |
| Conclude | Overall, the text presents... / The most important point is... | Closes the line of argument |
Basisfach support: Choose a small set of phrases you can actually use naturally. Accuracy and clarity matter more than memorising long phrase lists.
Analysis: Evidence → effect → meaning
A useful speaking unit is short:
Point → evidence → effect → meaning → context.
Example pattern: “The author repeatedly uses inclusive pronouns. This creates a sense of shared responsibility. It supports the argument that the issue concerns the whole community. In a wider course context, this can be linked to debates about participation and identity.”
Do not list stylistic devices without explaining their function. Do not quote long passages. Short, accurate references are more useful than recitation.
Visual material
If the task includes an image, chart, poster or other discontinuous text, move from description to interpretation.
- Identify the source, type and central message.
- Select only relevant visual features such as composition, proportion, symbolism, perspective, captions or headings.
- Explain how the visual feature shapes meaning.
- Connect the visual to the written text when the task asks you to.
German help: Nicht nur beschreiben. Immer fragen: Was bewirkt das Merkmal, und wie trägt es zur Aussage bei?
Listening and Viewing
The following BBC Learning English video gives general advice for speaking exams. Some examples concern pair or group exams, so adapt the advice to the Baden-Württemberg individual Basisfach examination.
First viewing: Note three practical actions.
Second viewing: Listen for one strategy for unclear questions and one strategy for pace or pronunciation.
Transfer: Write one sentence beginning with “In the Baden-Württemberg Basisfach exam, I can use this by...”

Speaking: Build the ten-minute talk

A strong monologue sounds planned but not memorised.
| Part | Goal | Support question |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Identify text, issue and route through the task. | What is this text about and what will I show? |
| Main point one | Answer the first task focus with evidence and analysis. | What is the key claim and how does the text support it? |
| Main point two | Develop analysis or a second task focus. | Which feature or idea deserves deeper explanation? |
| Context bridge | Link relevant course knowledge without leaving the text behind. | Which wider topic makes this text easier to understand? |
| Conclusion | Synthesize rather than repeat. | What is the most important result of my analysis? |
Timing practice: Aim for a calm pace. A ten-minute talk is not a race. Pauses for thought are better than filling every second with “um”.
The exam discussion

The discussion is not meant to be a rapid-fire quiz. Examiners may ask you to deepen, problematise or widen the issues and connect them to broader course contexts. The goal is to show flexible thinking and appropriate response in English.
Use this response shape:
Answer → reason → evidence or example → connection.
Useful moves:
- Clarify: “Do you mean the author’s argument or the wider issue?”
- Develop: “A further aspect is...”
- Qualify: “That is true in this case, although...”
- Connect: “This links to the course topic of...”
- Correct yourself: “Let me reformulate that more precisely...”
Self-correction is a communication strategy, not a failure.
Writing: Notes, not a script
Writing matters mainly during preparation. Your best product is a speaking map, not a full essay.
Use three columns on scrap paper:
| Task | Evidence | Meaning or context |
|---|---|---|
| What must I answer? | Which detail proves it? | Why does it matter? |
Then reduce each row to keywords. If you can read your notes aloud as complete sentences, you may have written too much.
Mediation: useful transfer, not the exam core
Mediation is not a separate phase of this oral Basisfach exam. It can still improve your ability to paraphrase and explain ideas.
Practice: Read one short English idea, explain it in simple English without the key noun, then give a one-sentence German rescue only if your partner still does not understand. Return immediately to English.
This trains flexible reformulation without turning the exam into translation.
Differenzierung im Basisfach
Basisfach means clear structure and secure communication on a manageable task, not superficial thinking.
| Support level | What to do | Appropriate challenge |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Use a speaking frame and two strong pieces of evidence. | Secure understanding and clear structure |
| Standard | Add effect, context and a qualified conclusion. | Independent analysis and communication |
| Stretch | Compare interpretations, discuss limitations and connect across course topics. | Selective transfer without overloading the task |
If language is the main difficulty, simplify syntax but keep the analytical relationship. If content is the main difficulty, use a smaller number of points and develop them more clearly.
Feedback and Fehleranalyse
After a practice talk, do not ask only “Was it good?”. Diagnose one next step.
| Focus | Self-check | Typical repair |
|---|---|---|
| Task fulfilment | Did I answer the operator and all task parts? | Rephrase the task as a spoken thesis |
| Evidence | Did I support claims with precise text references? | Add two evidence-effect links |
| Analysis | Did I explain meaning instead of naming devices? | Add “This suggests...” or “This highlights...” |
| Context | Did I connect relevant course knowledge without drifting away? | Use one explicit bridge sentence |
| Language | Was my English clear, varied and appropriate? | Replace one vague phrase and one repeated word |
| Discussion | Did I respond directly before adding background? | Answer first, then expand |
Error log: Keep three columns: “My recurring issue – example – repair strategy”. Revisit the log after the next mock exam.
Responsible practice: sources, AI and privacy
Your analysis and speaking must be your own. AI-supported information can be useful for checking vocabulary, generating practice questions or comparing explanations only when school rules allow it, but you must verify factual claims against reliable sources and never treat an AI response as an authority.
- Use fictional names and fictional personal data in practice scenarios.
- Do not upload protected exam tasks, classmates' work or personal data to public services.
- Recordings are voluntary; keep them private unless everyone involved has explicitly agreed.
- Do not trigger external AI tools or uploads on behalf of other people without permission.
- Do not submit AI-generated replacement essays or memorised model speeches as your own work.
- Check source, date, author, purpose and evidence before reusing a claim.
Abi-Check
You are ready for a full mock exam when you can answer “yes” to these statements:
- I know that this course concerns the oral Basisfach exam only if English is one of my oral exam subjects.
- I can explain the 20-minute preparation and roughly 10-plus-10-minute exam structure.
- I can work with a new authentic text without searching for a memorised model answer.
- I can turn an operator into a clear speaking route.
- I can support analysis with concise textual evidence.
- I can connect the text to relevant course content.
- I can keep speaking when I need to clarify, qualify or correct myself.
