ABI - Deutsch natürlich ins Englische vermitteln
ABI - Deutsch natürlich ins Englische vermitteln
Mini-Beschreibung: Express meaning naturally in English instead of transferring German syntax and single words. Work from context, word formation, visuals, English explanations and dictionaries before using German support. Target group: Basisfach (BF) and Leistungsfach (LF), English as a continued foreign language in the Baden-Württemberg upper secondary course stage.

Einleitung
You do not build good English by replacing German words one by one. You build it by asking: What do I mean? Who am I speaking to? What would a clear English sentence normally sound like? This aiMOOC trains that shift from word-for-word transfer to idiomatic, precise and understandable English.
The course is English first: use context, visuals, word families, collocations, paraphrases, an English explanation and a learner's dictionary before German help. German remains useful when it solves a real comprehension problem, but it is not the default route.
For Baden-Württemberg, the course is aligned with English as a continued foreign language in the gymnasiale Kursstufe. The Bildungsplan distinguishes BF and LF mainly through complexity, abstraction, breadth, depth and differentiation. By the end of the course stage, the orientation is B2, in parts C1. For Abitur 2027, the current Facherlass refers to the 2016 curriculum, the topic On the Move: Migration and Cross-Cultural Encounters, listening and writing in the LF written examination, and the updated IQB operator set from 2027. Always check the official documents for your own examination year before planning revision.

I-can goals
- I can phrase ideas naturally: I can move from meaning to a typical English phrase instead of translating German syntax.
- I can use context vocabulary: I can choose collocations, word families and register that fit the situation.
- I can analyse texts and media: I can connect content, purpose, structure and language with evidence.
- I can speak clearly: I can paraphrase when a word is missing and keep interaction going.
- I can write independently: I can plan, draft, check and improve a text without copying model answers.
- I can mediate: I can relay relevant meaning for a specific audience rather than translate everything.
Prior knowledge check
Try these without a translator. Explain your choice in English.
- German idea: „Das spielt eine große Rolle.“ Choose or create a natural English phrase for a formal analysis.
- German idea: „Ich bin mit dieser Meinung nicht einverstanden.“ Reformulate it for a discussion, then for an article.
- German idea: „Die Grafik zeigt, dass …“ Give two alternatives that avoid repeating shows.
- German idea: „Es kommt darauf an.“ Express it in a context where conditions matter.
- German idea: „Man muss berücksichtigen, dass …“ Create a concise analytical sentence.
Self-check: If your first move was to translate each German word, repeat the task by starting with the intended function: explain, contrast, qualify, evaluate or persuade.
Core strategy: Meaning before words

Use a short five-step routine:
- Meaning: What is the core message?
- Context: Who is the audience, and what is the purpose?
- Chunk: Which English collocation or sentence pattern fits?
- Grammar: Which structure makes the relationship between ideas clear?
- Check: Does the sentence sound like English, or like German with English words?
A natural version may be shorter, longer or structurally different from the German starting point. That is not a mistake. The goal is equivalent meaning and appropriate effect.
Typical transfer problems
| German starting point | Less natural transfer | Better English direction |
|---|---|---|
| „eine Entscheidung treffen“ | make a decision is fine, but not every noun needs make | check the usual verb-noun collocation |
| „etwas macht Sinn“ | something makes sense can work | ask whether is sensible, is plausible or is useful fits better |
| „aktuell“ | actually | current, currently, at present, recent, depending on meaning |
| „bekommen“ | become | get, receive, obtain, be given, depending on context |
| „kontrollieren“ | control | check, monitor, verify, inspect, depending on purpose |
Do not memorise isolated replacements. Store meaning + example + collocation + register.
Context vocabulary and word formation

A useful word is not only a translation. Build a small network around it.
| Base idea | Word family | Useful chunk | Typical context |
|---|---|---|---|
| differ | difference, different, differently | differ significantly from | comparison |
| respond | response, responsive | respond to criticism | analysis or discussion |
| assume | assumption | challenge an assumption | evaluation |
| persuade | persuasive, persuasion | a persuasive argument | non-fiction analysis |
| migrate | migrant, migration, migratory | patterns of migration | socio-cultural topics |
BF: Learn a manageable set of high-frequency chunks and reuse them accurately. LF: Extend the same network with register, connotation, near-synonyms and discipline-specific uses.
Dictionary before translation
When you meet an unfamiliar word:
- infer its meaning from context;
- check word class and word family;
- read an English definition;
- inspect one or two authentic example sentences;
- check collocations and register;
- use a bilingual dictionary only if the meaning is still unclear.
A dictionary entry is evidence, not a command. Choose what fits your sentence.
Listening and Viewing

Before listening, predict topic, speaker role and likely vocabulary. During the first listen, capture the gist. During a second listen, add evidence: attitude, contrast, examples, numbers, reasons or implications. Avoid translating in your head while the audio continues.
Micro-task: After a short authentic clip, write a 30-word gist in English, then list three phrases you heard as chunks rather than single words.
For Abitur 2027 LF, the official Facherlass describes an approximately 30-minute listening section with formats such as multiple choice, matching and short answers before the writing section.
Viewing for language and meaning
Do not analyse a video as moving wallpaper. Link visual choices and spoken language: framing, composition, perspective, captions, sound, pace and speaker stance can change meaning.
Use legally embedded public material. Do not upload film scenes, copyrighted extracts or recordings of other people without permission.
Reading

Read in three passes:
- Orientation: source, genre, audience, topic, structure.
- Meaning: claims, examples, relationships, shifts.
- Language: wording, register, tone, syntax and rhetorical choices that matter for the task.
Do not stop at every unknown word. Mark words as essential, guessable or non-essential. Look up only what is worth the interruption.
Analysis
For analysis, move from observation to effect and purpose.
Weak: The author uses a rhetorical question. Stronger: The rhetorical question directly involves the audience and frames the issue as a shared concern. Stronger still: Connect that effect to the author’s overall line of argument and support it with precise textual evidence.
For non-fiction, useful aspects include structure, line of argument, register, tone, lexical fields, syntactic patterns, forms of address, examples, statistics, references and perspective. For literary texts, focus can include narrative perspective, characterization, setting, plot and time structure, and use of language.
For Abitur 2027, the Facherlass explicitly notes that discontinuous material such as images, cartoons, posters, diagrams, tables and charts may be part of analysis.
Operator awareness
From examination year 2027, use the revised IQB operator set. Do not learn operators as German translations only. Learn the action.
- analyze / examine: describe and explain relevant features in detail, supported by evidence.
- assess / evaluate: make a well-founded judgment using criteria, evidence and examples.
- outline / summarize: select relevant information and condense it according to the task.
- compare: identify relevant similarities and differences in relation to a focus.
- comment / discuss: develop a reasoned position or balanced argument as required by the task.
Always read the whole instruction, not just the operator.
Speaking

Natural speaking is not perfect speaking. Keep the message moving.
Useful repair strategies:
- define the idea: It is a situation in which …
- give an example: For instance …
- contrast: What I mean is not X but Y.
- reformulate: Let me put that differently.
- qualify: To some extent …
- invite interaction: How do you see it?
BF: use clear structure, reliable chunks and explicit turn-taking. LF: sustain longer reasoning, react flexibly, connect materials and qualify positions with greater precision.
Recordings are voluntary and should remain private unless everyone involved has knowingly agreed to another use.
Writing

Write from a plan, not from a German draft.
Planning frame:
- purpose and target audience;
- central claim or intention;
- two or three main points;
- evidence or examples;
- logical links;
- appropriate register;
- final check for clarity, cohesion and idiomatic language.
A useful editing order is: meaning → structure → paragraph logic → sentence clarity → vocabulary → grammar → spelling. Do not begin by polishing individual words in a sentence whose logic is still unclear.
Paraphrasing without copying
Paraphrasing means changing both wording and structure while preserving the relevant meaning. Replacing a few words with synonyms is not enough. Read, close the source, state the idea in your own structure, compare with the source, and cite when required.
AI-generated text is not evidence of your own writing ability. If AI is permitted in a learning task, verify claims and sources, mark its use as required, and revise critically. Do not submit replacement essays generated by AI.
Mediation
Mediation is audience-focused meaning transfer, not full translation.
Example task logic: A German source explains a local initiative. Your English-speaking exchange partner only needs the points relevant to joining it. Select, reorganise and explain those points in natural English. Omit irrelevant detail and clarify culture-specific information where necessary.
Checklist:
- What does the target person need?
- Which information is relevant?
- Which terms need explanation rather than direct translation?
- What register fits?
- Can the result stand alone in English?
Feedback and error analysis
Use feedback in categories.
| Code | Question | Revision move |
|---|---|---|
| M | Is the meaning accurate? | Restate the intended message. |
| C | Is the connection between ideas clear? | Add or change linking logic. |
| I | Is the phrase idiomatic? | Check collocation and examples. |
| R | Is the register appropriate? | Adapt wording to audience and genre. |
| G | Is the grammar supporting the meaning? | Correct the specific structure. |
Create an error log with one example, one corrected version and one rule or pattern. Do not collect every mistake; collect mistakes that are likely to recur.
Safe and independent learning
Use fictional personal data in practice tasks. Recordings are voluntary and stay private unless everyone involved has clearly agreed to another use. Do not upload classmates' work, voices, images or personal information without permission. Do not send material to external AI services unless this is explicitly allowed and everyone affected understands what is being shared.
Your final speaking and writing should remain your own work. AI can support permitted checking or reflection, but its statements and sources must be verified; it must not replace reading, thinking, analysis or the production of an assessed response.
BF and LF differentiation
| Dimension | Basisfach | Leistungsfach |
|---|---|---|
| Material | shorter, more manageable, strongly focused | broader, denser, more complex, more independent linking |
| Support | more structure prompts, phrase banks, staged tasks | fewer prompts, more self-directed planning |
| Analysis | selected aspects with clear guidance | deeper integration of form, content, context and effect |
| Transfer | guided transfer to a comparable context | independent synthesis across materials and perspectives |
| AFB | emphasis on secure AFB I/II with selected AFB III | stronger weighting of AFB II/III and independent evaluation |
The aim is not artificial difficulty. Both routes should build precise, purposeful English at an appropriate challenge level.
Abi-Check
Current check for examination year 2027 in Baden-Württemberg:
- LF written examination: listening plus writing; the writing part includes reading comprehension, analysis and a choice between a personal response and a creative/functional writing task.
- LF aids named in the Facherlass include a monolingual English dictionary, a bilingual English-German/German-English dictionary and German spelling reference works.
- BF and LF share the same main topic and compulsory works in principle, with BF treated at an appropriate level and scope.
- BF coursework across the four half-years covers listening, reading, analysis, mediation and two different writing types.
- The revised IQB English operator set applies from Abitur 2027.
These points are year-specific. Before an actual examination, compare this course with the current Facherlass, school instructions and teacher guidance.
Transfer and follow-up course
Transfer the strategy to every topic: migration, identity, politics, media, science, literature or everyday communication. The method stays stable: understand meaning, build context vocabulary, read or listen strategically, analyse evidence, speak or write for a purpose, then revise.
Follow-up course: ABI - English analysis and writing under exam conditions.
