ABI LF - Schriftliche Englisch-Abiturprüfung 2027 verstehen
Mini description: Understand the structure and flow of the 2027 English Leistungskurs Abitur in Baden-Württemberg: listening, the 15-minute break, the writing section, task choice and the separate communication exam.

Media task: Watch the BBC Learning English clip as strategy training, not as an explanation of the Baden-Württemberg exam rules. Write down three listening habits that could help you in Part I.
I can ...
- Explain the exam flow: I can explain Part I, the break, Part II and the separate communication exam.
- Manage my time: I can build a realistic plan for about 255 minutes of written working time plus the additional 15-minute break.
- Choose strategically: I can compare the two Part-II options before committing to one.
- Analyse evidence: I can support an interpretation with precise textual evidence and explain its effect.
- Write independently: I can plan, draft and revise a coherent response without using AI as a replacement writer.
- Speak and interact: I can prepare a short monologue and contribute actively to a dialogue.
Vorwissen aktivieren
English first. Before reading the details, sketch the exam from memory: What comes first? When is the break? Which part contains a task choice? Which assessment is oral?
Quick check: Mark each statement as sure, unsure or new to me: listening first; two Part-II task sets; dictionaries as permitted aids; separate communication exam; evidence-based analysis; comment or creative writing.
Deutsch-Hilfe erst danach: Nutze die folgenden Abschnitte, um Unsicherheiten gezielt zu klären. Versuche Begriffe zunächst aus Kontext und Wortfamilie zu erschließen.

| READING COMPREHENSION | → | ANALYSIS | → | COMMENT OR CREATIVE WRITING |
Abi check: If your personal plan treats the 15-minute break as part of the 255 minutes, correct it. The official working time is about 255 minutes; the break comes on top.
Part I: Listening comprehension

English first: Part I checks whether you can understand an unfamiliar spoken English text and extract relevant information. Possible formats include multiple choice, matching and semi-open answers.
The audio source can come from formats such as interviews, reports, speeches, radio plays or literary readings. Train different accents, speaker roles, attitudes and information densities rather than memorising one format.
Three-pass strategy for practice:
- Before listening: Predict topic, speaker relationship and likely vocabulary from the task.
- During the first orientation: Listen for situation, purpose, stance and structure instead of translating every word.
- During detail work: Link each answer to an audible clue and distinguish evidence from inference.
- After practice: Label each mistake: vocabulary gap, distractor, missed detail, wrong inference or loss of concentration.
Viewing transfer: Although the written Part I is listening comprehension, audiovisual material is useful preparation for identifying stance, register and communicative intention. In the communication exam, impulses may also be audiovisual.
Part II: task choice
English first: You receive two complete task sets. One uses a literary source, the other a non-literary source. One task set is linked to the focus topic and mandatory works; the other is linked to one or both specified topic fields.
The source text is an unfamiliar English linear text. Additional material such as images, statistics or charts may be included.
Do not choose by topic alone. Compare:
- Operators: What exactly are you asked to do?
- Source fit: Which source can you analyse more precisely?
- Connections: Where can you link course knowledge without forcing it?
- Writing task: Which final task lets you develop a focused, convincing response?
60-second decision rehearsal: Practise scanning both task sets under time pressure, then justify your choice in one sentence: “I choose task set ... because the source and operators allow me to show ...”.
Part II.1: Reading comprehension

Core move: Produce an aspect-focused summary. Do not retell everything. Select information that answers the exact task.
English explanation: A summary is concise, neutral and task-focused. It shows that you can distinguish central information from supporting detail.
Support ladder: context → paragraph function → key idea → paraphrase → concise link to the task.
Common error: copying phrases instead of paraphrasing. Fix it by closing the source after reading a paragraph and restating the idea in your own words before checking accuracy.
Part II.2: Analysis
Core move: Explain how the text creates meaning and why the chosen technique matters for the communicative intention.
For literary texts, relevant aspects can include word choice, lexical fields, tone, stylistic devices, syntax, narrative situation, point of view, mode of presentation, characterisation, plot and time structure or setting.
For non-literary texts, relevant aspects can include structure, language, forms of address, statistics, references, quotations, examples, perspective and other communicative strategies.
If visual or discontinuous material is part of the task, connect design and meaning: composition, proportion, scale, symbolism, perspective, captions, headings or slogans.
Evidence pattern: claim → precise evidence → technique → effect → link to purpose.
Leistungsfach standard: Aim for breadth, depth and complexity. A strong response differentiates between possible effects, uses evidence precisely and links material independently. AFB II and III carry particular weight compared with simple reproduction.
Part II.3: Writing

English first: You choose between a personal comment and a creative writing task. Creative target text types can include an article, blog entry, email, letter, letter to the editor or speech manuscript.
Writing loop: task → audience → purpose → plan → evidence or ideas → coherent paragraphs → language check → task check.
Do not write a replacement essay in advance. Train adaptable structures and reasoning, not memorised full responses.
Feedback focus: In the official assessment of Part II, content and language are weighted 40 : 60. Use feedback accordingly: first check task fulfilment and argumentation, then systematically revise language, cohesion, register and accuracy.
Speaking: the communication exam

Separate from the written paper. The communication exam has its own preparation time and procedure.
| Format | Preparation | Examination | Typical structure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single exam | 15 minutes | At least 15 minutes | About 5 minutes monologue, about 10 minutes dialogue with a teacher |
| Tandem exam | 15 minutes | At least 20 minutes | About 5 minutes monologue per student, about 10 minutes dialogue |
During preparation, you work individually under supervision and may make notes. In the preparation room, speaking is not permitted. Permitted aids are a monolingual and a bilingual dictionary; no other aids are allowed.
The impulses can be visual, audio, audiovisual, quotations or theses. German-language material can also be used in the sense of mediation. The tasks follow a thematic line and move from prepared monologic speaking to interaction.
Assessment focuses on: task fulfilment and content; strategy, interaction and discourse ability; linguistic performance.
Overall weighting in the English Abitur result: Listening 20 %, Writing 55 %, Communication 25 %.
Speaking strategy: develop → support → connect → invite response → react. In a tandem, interaction matters: listen actively, refer to your partner’s point and move the discussion forward.
Mediation: know where it belongs
Mediation is important, but it is not a separate named Part III of the 2027 written paper. In the qualification phase, one written assessment or part of an assessment checks mediation as an isolated format of foreign-language text production. In the communication exam, a German-language impulse may also be used in the sense of mediation.
Training therefore remains useful: identify the recipient, select relevant information and transfer meaning appropriately rather than translating word for word.
Context vocabulary: English before German

Vocabulary rule: First use context, then word formation, then an English explanation, then a monolingual dictionary. Use German help only if needed.
| Term | English explanation | Word family / clue | Deutsche Nothilfe |
|---|---|---|---|
| listening comprehension | understanding spoken language for gist, detail and intention | listen – listener – listening | Hörverstehen |
| task choice | deciding which complete task set to answer | choose – choice | Aufgabenwahl |
| aspect-focused summary | a concise summary limited to the aspect named in the task | focus – focused | aspektbezogene Zusammenfassung |
| evidence | a precise textual detail that supports a claim | evident – evidence | Beleg |
| stance | the writer’s or speaker’s position or attitude | stand – stance | Haltung |
| register | language choices appropriate to situation, audience and purpose | formal – informal | Sprachregister |
| cohesion | links that make ideas and paragraphs connect clearly | cohere – cohesive – cohesion | Textzusammenhang |
| mediation | transferring relevant meaning appropriately between languages or contexts | mediate – mediation | Sprachmittlung |
| discourse | connected language used to develop and negotiate ideas | discourse marker | zusammenhängender Diskurs |
| communicative intention | what a text or speaker aims to achieve with an audience | communicate – communication | kommunikative Absicht |
Dictionary drill: Give yourself 90 seconds for one unknown word. Try context and morphology first. Only then consult a dictionary. Record whether the lookup actually improved understanding.
2027 content frame
The official focus topic for the 2027 English Leistungsfach includes On the Move: Migration and Cross-Cultural Encounters. The Facherlass also names mandatory works and the topic fields on the USA and the United Kingdom.
This course does not reproduce complete mandatory literary texts or protected film sequences. Work with legally provided classroom materials, short quotations within permitted limits, teacher-created extracts, public-domain or openly licensed texts and your own notes.
Transfer question: How can migration, belonging, identity, power or cultural encounter shape a narrator’s perspective, a speaker’s stance or a public argument? Use the topic knowledge as context, not as a memorised essay.
Help system
Level 1 – English hint: Restate the operator in your own words.
Level 2 – Structure hint: Use a frame such as claim → evidence → effect → purpose.
Level 3 – Language hint: Search for a word family, synonym or monolingual definition.
Level 4 – German support: Use a short German clarification only after the English routes have been tried.
Differentiation: Adjust language complexity, text length, pace, analytic depth and amount of support. In Leistungsfach tasks, gradually remove scaffolds so that material links, evidence selection and judgement become increasingly independent.
Feedback and error analysis
| Error type | Diagnostic question | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Task error | Did I answer the operator and every required aspect? | Rewrite the task in your own words before revising. |
| Evidence error | Is my claim actually supported by the cited detail? | Add or replace evidence and explain its relevance. |
| Analysis error | Did I name a device without explaining its effect? | Add effect and communicative purpose. |
| Structure error | Can the reader follow the logic between paragraphs? | Add clear topic sentences and transitions. |
| Language error | Is the wording precise, idiomatic and appropriate in register? | Revise recurring error patterns, not only isolated mistakes. |
| Time error | Did one subtask consume disproportionate time? | Set checkpoints in the next practice session. |
Feedback routine: one strength → one high-impact revision → one transferable rule for the next task.
AI, sources, privacy and independent work
Your work must remain your work. Use AI, where your school permits it, for explanation, questioning or feedback practice, not as a substitute for your own Abitur response.
Check AI-generated claims against reliable sources, especially official exam rules. Never assume that an AI system knows the current examination year correctly.
Use fictitious personal data in practice tasks. Recordings for speaking practice are voluntary and should remain private unless you explicitly decide otherwise. Do not upload classmates’ voices, texts or personal information without permission. This aiMOOC requires no automatic upload and no unrequested access to external AI services.
Abi-Check: one-page readiness test

- Timing: I can state the 30-minute listening phase, the additional 15-minute break and the 225-minute writing phase.
- Choice: I can compare both Part-II task sets before choosing.
- Reading: I can write an aspect-focused summary.
- Analysis: I can build claim-evidence-effect-purpose chains.
- Writing: I can adapt structure and register to purpose and audience.
- Speaking: I can sustain a monologue and interact in dialogue.
- Dictionary: I can use permitted dictionaries efficiently instead of looking up every unknown word.
- Independence: I can produce and revise my own work and verify external or AI-generated information.

Transfer and next course
Use this overview as a hub. Continue with focused practice in Hörverstehen Englisch, Textanalyse Englisch, Writing Englisch, Operatoren Englisch, Sprachmittlung Englisch and Kommunikationsprüfung Englisch.
Folgekurs idea: Build a personal “Abitur Evidence Lab”: one short listening task, one aspect-focused summary, one evidence-based analysis paragraph, one timed writing task and one speaking rehearsal per cycle. Track only two recurring errors at a time.

Offene Aufgaben
Leicht
