E10 M - Present a volunteer opportunity abroad

I can ...

  1. I can understand the main information in a volunteer offer.
  2. I can explain tasks, requirements, costs and support.
  3. I can analyse possible challenges without using cultural stereotypes.
  4. I can present a volunteer opportunity in clear B1 English.
  5. I can react to questions and negotiate ideas in a short discussion.
  6. I can write a suitable formal email and revise it after feedback.
  7. I can mediate important information for a specific person and purpose.

Vorwissen aktivieren

Look at the picture and video. Then answer in English:

  1. What kinds of volunteer work can you imagine abroad?
  2. Which three skills could be useful?
  3. What would you want to know before applying?

Do not translate every word. Use context, images and words you already know.

Listening and Viewing

Before viewing: Predict three words you expect to hear.

While viewing: Note only key words for purpose – people – place – support.

After viewing: Give a 30-second summary in your own words.

Source check: This European Commission video is older. Compare its general message with the current European Youth Portal before using details about registration or funding.

Viewing task: Which information still matches the current portal? Which details might have changed? Write two checked facts and one question.

Reading: YOU(TH) 4 FUTURE

Source basis: European Youth Portal, checked on 2 October 2026: YOU(TH) 4 FUTURE.

Read for meaning first.

YOU(TH) 4 FUTURE is an individual European Solidarity Corps project hosted by the Portuguese Red Cross in Sanguedo, Portugal. The project runs from March to July 2027. Volunteers support social, cultural, educational and environmental activities. They may work with children, older people, animals and the local community. Possible tasks include helping at a senior university, a kindergarten, an elderly day centre, a solidarity shop, animal organisations and environmental initiatives. Volunteers can also develop a personal project.

The project is for people aged 18 to 30. Applicants should be motivated, responsible, open to intercultural learning and ready to take initiative. No specific professional background is required.

Accommodation is provided in a shared house. Water, electricity and Wi-Fi are included. Volunteers receive €150 per month for food and €6 per day as pocket money. Travel costs are reimbursed according to the relevant distance band and programme rules. The project also offers mentoring, training and online language support for Portuguese.

Possible challenges are not listed as fixed facts. You need to analyse them. Shared living, a new language, different daily routines, responsibility in social settings and working with different age groups may require flexibility and good communication.

Reading check

Answer in English.

  1. Which tasks involve direct contact with people?
  2. What financial support is named?
  3. Which requirements are about attitude rather than qualifications?
  4. Which possible challenge is your own analysis and not a stated programme fact?
  5. Why should a class 10 learner treat this mainly as future planning?

  2. reQUIREment
  3. accommoDAtion
  4. alLOWance
  5. reimBURSEment
  6. comMUnity

Speaking

One-minute presentation

Present the opportunity without reading full sentences.

Use this order:

  1. What is it?
  2. Where and when?
  3. Main tasks
  4. Requirements
  5. Costs and support
  6. Possible challenges
  7. Your final comment

Useful phrases: The project offers ... / Volunteers are expected to ... / One possible challenge could be ... / According to the official listing ...

Spontaneous follow-up

A partner asks three questions. Answer without a prepared script.

Possible prompts:

  1. Why might this project suit a young adult?
  2. Which task could be difficult?
  3. Is the financial support enough for every personal expense?
  4. What would you ask the host organisation before applying?

Negotiate

In pairs, choose the three most important questions for a first online meeting with the host organisation. You have two minutes to agree.

Useful language: I would prioritise ... / I see your point, but ... / Could we agree on ...? / That matters because ...

Writing

Formal enquiry email

Write about 160 words to the host organisation. Use a fictional identity.

Include:

  1. a clear subject and polite opening
  2. why the project interests you
  3. two relevant fictional strengths or experiences
  4. two precise questions about tasks, support or daily life
  5. a suitable closing

Do not invent facts about the real organisation. Mark fictional personal details clearly in your draft.

Mini-CV transfer

Create a short fictional CV with:

  1. education
  2. language skills
  3. two relevant skills
  4. one fictional school or community activity
  5. availability in a future year when the person is at least 18

Do not publish real personal data.

Mediation

Your German-speaking parent asks: „Welche Kosten werden übernommen und welche Unterstützung gibt es?“

Explain the essential information in German in four or five sentences. Do not translate the reading text word for word. Select only information that matters for the parent.

Then reverse the direction: An English-speaking project mentor asks what worries the parent. Mediate the main concern in English.

Focus: purpose + audience + meaning.

Functional grammar

Use grammar to communicate, not as an isolated exercise.

Function Useful form Example
obligation have to / need to Volunteers have to act responsibly.
possibility might / could Shared living might be challenging.
polite question Could you tell me ...? Could you tell me more about the weekly schedule?
motivation would like to I would like to support community activities.
condition if + present, will / can If I join a project later, I will check the current rules first.

Feedback and revision

Give peer feedback on content before correcting every language detail.

  1. Two strengths: What is clear and useful?
  2. One next step: What information or language needs improvement?
  3. Source check: Is every factual claim supported by the official listing?
  4. Revision: Rewrite at least three sentences after feedback.

Priority: understandable message → suitable register → clear structure → language accuracy.

Error analysis

Correct the sentences and explain the problem briefly.

  1. I am interested on volunteering abroad.
  2. I want make a personal project.
  3. I can helping older people.
  4. The organisation give support.
  5. Hey guys, tell me what I get.

Possible correction areas: preposition, infinitive, modal verb, subject-verb agreement, register.

Source literacy and AI

When you use search engines or AI tools, keep your own thinking visible.

  1. Check important claims against the official project page.
  2. Distinguish listed facts from your analysis.
  3. Do not let a tool invent requirements, prices or benefits.
  4. Keep your own draft and revise it yourself.
  5. Do not send personal data, voice recordings or application files to external AI services without permission.
  6. Never upload another person's image, voice or personal information without consent.

Transfer

Find a second serious volunteer opportunity on an official or clearly identifiable organisation website. Compare it with YOU(TH) 4 FUTURE.

Your comparison must include:

  1. tasks
  2. requirements
  3. costs
  4. support
  5. possible challenges
  6. source date

Then decide which information is factual and which is your own interpretation.

Can-do check

Mark each statement: yes / partly / not yet.

  1. I can find the main facts in a longer volunteer offer.
  2. I can separate facts from possible challenges.
  3. I can present information with short notes.
  4. I can answer spontaneous questions.
  5. I can write a polite formal email.
  6. I can mediate information for a specific audience.
  7. I can check an AI-supported claim against a reliable source.
  8. I can revise my work after feedback.
