Jobs are more than job names

To understand a job, ask six simple questions:

  1. What is the job?
  2. Where does the person work?
  3. What does the person do?
  4. What tools does the person use?
  5. When does the person work?
  6. What skills does the person need?

Listening and Viewing

First viewing – no transcript:

Listen for job names only. Tick mentally when you hear a word you know.

Second viewing – focus:

Choose three jobs. For each job, note:

Job Workplace Task
__________ __________ __________
__________ __________ __________
__________ __________ __________

Response: Say two sentences: A … works in … . A … usually … .

Ask: Ask a partner: Where does a … work? What does a … do?

Hint: Use the table above.

Improve: Add one detail: A … also needs to be … .

Use again: Talk about a different job.

Listening challenge: English at Work

Watch only a short part first. You do not need to understand every word.

First try:

  1. Where are the people: office, hospital or kitchen?
  2. How many speakers can you notice?
  3. Which work words do you hear?

Second try:

  1. Who is new at work?
  2. What kind of workplace is shown?
  3. Find one useful phrase for communication at work.

Transcript help – open only after the first listening: The video introduces an office workplace with a new employee, a boss and colleagues. Focus on greetings, work roles and short workplace phrases. You do not need every sentence.

Listening strategy: First understand the situation. Then listen for key words. Only after that use subtitles or transcript support.

Audio and pronunciation

Listen – repeat – use. Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.

job

work

mechanic

worker

Fluency mini-drill:

  1. Listen once.
  2. Repeat once slowly.
  3. Say the word in a sentence.
  4. Say the sentence again without stopping.

Examples: I want a job with people. A mechanic works in a garage.

Reading: four fictional job cards

All people and workplaces below are fictional.

Profile: Maya works in a small café. She prepares simple food and keeps the kitchen clean. She often works with two other people. She needs to be careful and organised. She likes teamwork, but she does not like very late shifts.

Check: Name two tools Alex uses.

Reading strategy: key information

Do not translate every word.

Use this order:

  1. Find the job.
  2. Find the workplace.
  3. Underline tasks.
  4. Circle tools.
  5. Mark working hours.
  6. Find two skills.

Then answer in English with short sentences.

Context vocabulary

Word Simple meaning Example
task something you do at work My task is to check orders.
tool something you use to do a job A mechanic uses tools.
shift a fixed work period She works an early shift.
customer a person who buys something He helps customers.
colleague a person you work with I ask my colleague.
reliable people can depend on you A reliable worker is on time.
careful you pay attention Be careful with tools.
practical good at doing real tasks He is practical and likes repairs.
organised good at planning and order She keeps her work organised.
responsible you take duties seriously Nurses need to be responsible.

Word families: work → worker → workplace care → careful help → helpful

Tools at work

Look at the picture.

Say:

  1. I can see …
  2. A worker uses it to …
  3. It is useful for …

Do not worry if you do not know every tool name. Use simple descriptions: It is a tool for cutting. It is a tool for fixing things.

Working hours

Useful phrases:

I work from eight to four. I work Monday to Friday. I sometimes work weekends. I work shifts. I start early. I finish at five.

Ask: What time do you start? Do you work weekends? Do you work shifts?

Skills for work

A skill is something you can do well.

People skills: friendly, patient, clear communication, teamwork Practical skills: repair, cook, build, use tools Organisation skills: plan, check, be on time Thinking skills: solve problems, make decisions

Opinion pattern: I think teamwork is important because people often work together.

Reason pattern: A mechanic needs to be careful because tools can be dangerous.

Functional grammar

Only a few structures are important here.

Present simple for routines

A chef prepares food. A mechanic repairs vehicles. Office workers use computers.

Remember: with he / she / it, often add -s: She works. He checks.

can for skills

I can repair a bike. She can work in a team. Can you use a computer?

After can, use the basic verb: can work, not can works.

have to for duties

Workers have to follow safety rules. A chef has to keep the kitchen clean.

Use this structure when something is necessary.

because for reasons

I like this job because I enjoy practical work. Good communication is important because workers speak to customers.

One clear reason is enough.

Speaking: job talk

Round 1 – respond:

Choose one job card. Speak for 20–30 seconds.

My person is a … . They work in … . They … . They use … . They need to be … .

Round 2 – ask:

Partner questions:

  1. Where do you work?
  2. What do you do?
  3. What tools do you use?
  4. What time do you start?
  5. What skills do you need?
  6. What do you like about the job?

Round 3 – improve:

Add one reason with because.

I like the job because …

Short presentation

Prepare a 45–60 second talk about one job.

Use this frame:

The job is … . The person works in … . Typical tasks are … . The person uses … . Working hours are … . Important skills are … . I think this job is … because … .

You may use keywords. You do not need to memorise the text.

Writing

Task 1 – Short job profile

Write 70–90 words about a fictional worker.

Use: job – workplace – tasks – tools – hours – skills – opinion

Starter: Jordan works as a … . The workplace is … . Jordan usually … . For the job, Jordan uses … . Working hours are … . Important skills are … . I think … because … .

Task 2 – Structured email

Write a short email asking about a school work-experience placement.

Subject: Work experience question

Hello, I am a Year 9 student. I am interested in … . Could you tell me about the typical tasks? What working hours are usual? Which skills are important? Thank you for your help. Best wishes, [first name only / fictional name]

Privacy: Use fictional names and data in class practice. Do not publish private contact details.

Mediation – information weitergeben

A friend understands some German workplace information but needs the key points in English.

German note: „Die Praktikumsstelle ist in einer Fahrradwerkstatt. Arbeitszeit ist von 8:30 bis 15:30 Uhr. Du hilfst beim Prüfen und Reinigen von Fahrrädern. Du brauchst feste Schuhe.“

Your task: Pass on the important information in simple English. Do not translate every word.

Possible structure: The placement is at … . You work from … to … . You help with … . You need … .

Pronunciation and fluency

Focus on clear words, stress and useful chunks.

Useful chunks: works in a … works with … is responsible for … needs to be … has to … because …

Shadowing: Say one chunk directly after a model. Then use it with a new job.

Recording option: A short recording can help you practise, but recording is voluntary. Keep recordings private unless you actively choose to share them. No unasked uploads.

Help levels

Choose the help you need.

Help 1 – Words: use the vocabulary table.

Help 2 – Sentence starters: A … works in … The main task is … The person uses … The job needs …

Help 3 – Model: A mechanic works in a workshop. The mechanic repairs vehicles and uses tools. The job needs practical skills and careful work.

Help 4 – Question support: Where …? What …? When …? Which skills …? Why …?

Use less help when you can.

Feedback

Feedback should help you communicate better.

Two strengths + one next step:

  1. I understood …
  2. A useful phrase was …
  3. Next time, add / change …

Good feedback focuses on: meaning – clear structure – useful vocabulary – one or two accuracy goals.

Do not correct every small error.

Error analysis

Find the problem. Then improve the sentence.

First version Think Improved version
She work in a hospital. he/she/it? She works in a hospital.
He can repairs bikes. after can? He can repair bikes.
A chef work with food. subject + verb? A chef works with food.
I like this job. It is practical. add a reason? I like this job because it is practical.

Your turn: Choose one error from your own text. Keep your original sentence visible. Write the improved version next to it.

Safe and responsible media and AI use

  1. Use fictional job cards and fictional application data.
  2. Do not include private social-media data.
  3. Keep voice or video practice private unless you choose to share it.
  4. Do not upload other people's work, images or recordings without permission.
  5. If you use AI support, check facts, sources and feedback.
  6. Keep your own first version of a text. Compare it with changes instead of replacing it.
  7. Never assume that an AI answer is correct just because it sounds confident.

Media focus: real workplaces, no stereotypes

Jobs can look different in different places. Avoid ideas such as “this job is for men” or “that job is for women”. Focus on tasks, skills, training and working conditions.

Think: Which skills can be useful in many different jobs?

Transfer: Which job fits this situation?

Read the situations.

A: You like repairing things, solving practical problems and working with tools. B: You like helping people, staying calm and communicating clearly. C: You like organising information and using a computer. D: You like preparing food and working in a team.

Choose one situation and name a possible job. Give one reason.

I think … could fit because …

There can be more than one good answer.

Can-do check

Mark for yourself: yes – almost – not yet.

I can … yes almost not yet
name at least six jobs ☐ ☐ ☐
match jobs and workplaces ☐ ☐ ☐
understand a short job card ☐ ☐ ☐
describe tasks and tools ☐ ☐ ☐
ask three job questions ☐ ☐ ☐
give an opinion with because ☐ ☐ ☐
write a short job profile ☐ ☐ ☐

Next step: Choose one “almost” or “not yet” point. Repeat one activity from this course.
