E8 G - Respond to another opinion

Mini-Beschreibung: Reagiere höflich auf Zustimmung oder Widerspruch, greife eine Aussage Deiner Gesprächspartnerin oder Deines Gesprächspartners auf und nenne einen kurzen Grund. Du arbeitest mit vertrauten Themen, kurzen verbundenen Aussagen und klaren Hilfen auf Klasse-8-G-Niveau.

English first: context → try → ask → hint → German help if needed. Eine vollständige Übersetzung brauchst Du nicht.

Einleitung

Imagine this situation:

Maya: I think group work is useful because we can help each other.

How can you answer? A strong short response does three things: You react politely, you pick up Maya's idea, and you add your own reason.

Example: I agree. Helping each other is useful because difficult tasks become easier.

Or:

Example: I see your point, but I prefer working alone because I can concentrate better.

I-can-Ziele

  1. I can respond politely when someone gives an opinion.
  2. I can agree or disagree and give a short reason.
  3. I can pick up one point from another speaker.
  4. I can ask a short follow-up question to keep the conversation going.
  5. I can write a short connected response about a familiar topic.

Vorwissen aktivieren

Say one simple opinion in English about a familiar topic:

I think school trips are useful because ...

Now answer a partner with one of these short reactions:

I agree. That's a good point. I see your point, but ... I'm not sure about that because ...

If this is difficult, first use only one reaction. Then add a reason.

Medien-Einstieg: polite opinions

First viewing: Watch without reading a transcript. What is the main idea: being direct, being polite, or speaking very fast?

Second viewing: Listen for one phrase that makes an opinion sound less direct.

Only after your listening attempt: Use captions or a transcript if you need extra help.

Listening and Viewing

Listen for meaning first, not for every word.

Listening routine: Hear the short part once. Choose: agreement, disagreement or partly agreement. Hear it again. Note one useful phrase. Only then use captions if needed.

For G-level work, use a moderate pace and focus on one or two speakers. Repetition is useful.

Viewing task: Find one expression for agreement and one expression for disagreement. Do not copy the whole video. Choose only phrases that you can understand and use.

Reading: a short conversation

Fictional school context

Noah: I think our class should have more project work because we can create things together.

Leah: That's a good point. I like projects too because they can be practical.

Noah: Yes, and we can learn from each other.

Leah: I agree, but I think we still need some quiet individual work.

Check: Leah does not only say yes or no. She picks up Noah's idea and adds her own point.

Kontextwortschatz

English Simple meaning Use
opinion what you think give an opinion
agree have the same view I agree because ...
disagree have a different view I disagree because ...
point one idea in a conversation That's a good point.
reason why you think something My reason is ...
because gives a reason I agree because ...
but shows a contrast I see your point, but ...

Aussprache: verständlich sprechen

Aim for clear meaning, not a perfect accent.

Stress the important word:

I AGREE. That's a good POINT. I see your POINT, but ... I disagree beCAUSE ...

Speak in short chunks. A tiny pause before but can make your response easier to understand.

Speaking: the E8-G response pattern

Use this three-part pattern:

React → Pick up a point → Give a reason

Partner: I think homework should be shorter because students need free time.

You: That's a good point. Free time is important. I agree because students also need time to relax.

A short G-level exchange can stay at about four to six turns. One or two connected clauses per turn are enough.

Try familiar topics: homework, school lunch, sports, music, class trips, group work or free-time activities.

Ask a follow-up question

After your response, keep the conversation going with one short question:

What do you think? Why do you think that? What about group work? Do you agree?

You do not need a long interview. One useful follow-up question is enough.

Writing: a short opinion response

Write about 70–90 words.

Task: Your fictional classmate writes: “I think every class should do more outdoor learning because it is more interesting.”

Write a short reply. Use this structure:

Opening: Thanks for your message. Response: I agree / I see your point, but ... Connection: You said that outdoor learning is more interesting. Reason: I think ... because ... Ending: What do you think?

Use your own ideas. A model or KI suggestion should never replace your own text.

Mediation: short and selective

A German-speaking classmate says:

„Ich finde Gruppenarbeit gut, weil man sich gegenseitig helfen kann. Manchmal ist sie aber zu laut.“

Tell an English-speaking partner the main idea in two or three simple sentences. Do not translate every word.

Possible start: She thinks group work is useful because ...

Functional grammar

For your own speaking and writing, focus on useful links:

because gives a reason. but adds a different point. so shows a result.

Reported speech without backshift: At G-level you can report a present idea simply:

Maya says that group work is useful.

You do not need to change the tense here.

Receptive grammar only:

The idea was suggested by Noah. → Understand who suggested the idea.

Leah had already finished her task before the discussion started. → Understand which past action happened first.

You only need to understand these passive and past-perfect forms in this course. You do not have to produce them.

Gestufte Hilfen

Hint 1 – English first: Choose one frame: I agree because ... / I see your point, but ...

Hint 2 – Add one idea: useful, fair, difficult, interesting, relaxing, noisy, practical.

Hint 3 – Ask: What exactly did your partner say? Pick up one word or idea.

Deutsch nur wenn nötig: Greife einen Punkt auf, reagiere höflich und nenne einen Grund. Eine Wort-für-Wort-Übersetzung ist nicht nötig.

Direktes Feedback

Check your response:

  1. Did I react to the other opinion?
  2. Did I use one idea from the other speaker?
  3. Did I give a reason?
  4. Was my language polite and easy to understand?

Good communication is more important than accent-free speech.

Fehleranalyse

Not yet: I am agree. Better: I agree.

Not yet: I disagree you. Better: I disagree with you.

Not yet: That's wrong. Better: I see your point, but I think differently.

Not yet: Because it is useful. Better: I agree because it is useful.

The goal is not to remove every small error. Fix errors that make your meaning unclear or your response less polite.

Sicher mit Medien und KI arbeiten

Recordings are optional. Keep practice recordings private unless you actively choose to share them in a teacher-approved setting.

Do not upload private conversations, names, account data or social-media screenshots.

Do not send your work to an external KI service unless your school or teacher has approved that tool and the task requires it. Check KI language level, facts and feedback. Keep your own ideas and wording.

Transfer: a mini conversation

Situation: Two fictional classmates discuss a class activity.

A: I think a class game is better than a worksheet because everyone can join in.

B: That's a good point. I agree because games can be motivating.

A: Yes, but a worksheet can help us practise quietly.

B: I see your point. Maybe we can use both.

Now change the topic and create a similar four-turn conversation.

  2. Pick up a point: Lies drei Aussagen einer fiktiven Person.

Lernkontrolle

  1. Response choice: Du hörst die Meinung „Group work is useful because we can help each other.“ Formuliere zwei unterschiedliche passende Antworten: einmal Zustimmung, einmal höflichen Widerspruch.
  2. Conversation repair: Verbessere die Antwort „No, you're wrong.“ so, dass sie höflich ist, einen Punkt der anderen Person aufgreift und einen Grund nennt.
  3. Listening transfer: Höre einen kurzen Dialog zweimal. Erkläre anschließend, welche Aussage der zweite Sprecher aufgegriffen hat und woran Du das erkennst.
  4. Writing transfer: Schreibe eine kurze Antwort auf eine neue fiktive Meinung. Nutze einen Zusammenhang mit because, but oder so, ohne das Muster nur zu kopieren.
  5. Grammar in context: Erkläre bei zwei Sätzen mit passive oder past perfect nur die Bedeutung im Kontext. Du musst die Form nicht selbst produzieren.
  6. Communication reflection: Vergleiche zwei Antworten mit gleichem Inhalt, aber unterschiedlichem Ton. Begründe, welche Formulierungen respektvoller und verständlicher wirken.
