Mini-Beschreibung: Recognise a few common false friends between German and English. Choose words from the context, not from how similar they look.

Quick notice: Two words can look friendly but mean different things. Before you translate, ask: What does the whole sentence mean?

Try these without a dictionary.

1. Complete: “Ich bekomme a message.” → “I ______ a message.”

2. Choose: “My German Handy is new.” In English you need mobile phone or smartphone, not handy.

3. Think: Does English eventually mean eventuell?

Hint: Look at the situation, not only at the spelling.

Six false friends you need

Rule: Do not translate by shape. Translate by meaning in the sentence.

Media clue 1: gift or Gift?

English: “This is a gift for you.”

German idea: “Gift” needs the English word poison.

Try: Complete the message: “Do not touch it. It may be ______.”

Hint: The warning sign tells you the context.

Feedback: poison is correct.

Media clue 2: chef or Chef?

A chef cooks food. A German Chef at work is usually a boss or manager in English.

Try: “Ms Green is my ______ at the shop.” “Sam is the ______ in the restaurant kitchen.”

Feedback: boss / chef

Media clue 3: Handy or handy?

English: “This small bag is handy.” = It is useful or practical.

German Handy: “My mobile phone is in my bag.”

Mini-transfer: Say one thing in your school bag that is handy.

Media clue 4: eventually or eventuell?

eventually = after some time, in the end

Example: “We looked for the keys for ten minutes. Eventually, Mia found them.”

eventuell = maybe / possibly

Example: “Maybe we can meet after school.”

Hint: A time story often helps you understand eventually.

Read each mini-scene before choosing.

A. Leo opens his inbox. A teacher has sent him a file. → “Leo received a file.”

B. A school website was changed this morning. → “The information is current.”

C. Ella is not sure whether she can come. → “Maybe she can come.”

D. The class waits for the late bus. It arrives after twenty minutes. → “Eventually, the bus arrives.”

E. A restaurant worker prepares the food. → “The chef prepares the food.”

F. A small dictionary fits into your pocket and is useful. → “The dictionary is handy.”

Reading

Exchange Day – a short message

Hi Ben, I finally received the plan for our exchange day. The current version says we meet at 8:15 at school. Maybe our group will visit the market first. Later, we are going to a small restaurant. The chef will show us how the kitchen works. Our teacher says a pocket notebook is handy because we can write down new words. I also have a small gift for my exchange partner. We may have to wait for the bus, but it will eventually come! The actual problem is the weather: rain is possible. See you tomorrow, Lina

Check the context:

Why is current correct in “the current version”?
What does handy describe?
What happens before the bus eventually comes?
Is actual about time or about what is really the problem?

Quick feedback: current = up-to-date; handy = useful; eventually = after waiting; actual = real/tatsächlich.

Build useful chunks, not single words:

Mini-rule: Learn the word together with a situation or chunk. This makes the context easier to remember.

Pronunciation

Clarity first. You do not need a perfect accent.

Say these words slowly, then in a sentence:

become – stress the second syllable
actual – stress the first syllable
eventually – stress the middle part
chef – one clear syllable
gift – short and clear
handy – stress the first syllable

Try: Record yourself only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless your teacher has clearly asked for a safe school submission. Do not upload private recordings to public services.

Speaking

Pair task: “What do you mean?”

Student A says one sentence with a target word. Student B checks the meaning.

Example: A: “Eventually, we found the station.” B: “So you found it after some time?” A: “Yes, exactly.”

Use at least four: become, receive, current, actual, maybe, eventually, chef, boss, gift, handy.

Useful reactions:

“Do you mean ...?”
“I think ... fits better because ...”
“The context tells me ...”
“Can you explain that word?”

Challenge: Give one short reason for each correction.

Writing

Write a short email of 70–90 words.

Situation: You are organising a class activity. Include:

one piece of current information,
something that may happen,
something that happens eventually,
one person such as a chef or boss,
one handy object,
one sentence with receive or become.

Structure: Greeting → plan → details → possible change → closing.

Self-edit: Circle every target word and ask: “Does the context fit the English meaning?”

Mediation

Do not translate word for word. Pass on the meaning.

German message: „Eventuell bekomme ich heute die aktuelle Version. Mein Chef schickt sie mir.“

Your task: Tell an English-speaking classmate the message in one or two natural English sentences.

Hint: eventuell → maybe; bekommen → get/receive; aktuell → current; Chef → boss.

Possible solution: “Maybe I will receive the current version today. My boss will send it to me.”

Functional grammar

No new grammar rule is the main goal here. Use grammar you already know to make the meaning clear.

Useful patterns:

I want to become ...
I received ...
This is the current ...
The actual problem is ...
Maybe we can ...
We waited, and eventually ...

E-look only: If you later meet the past perfect, keep the same context rule for vocabulary. Do not use a new tense just to practise false friends.

Step-by-step help

Help 1 – English clue: Ask what happens in the sentence: time, person, object, uncertainty, real problem, or change?

Help 2 – English choice: Compare two likely words and test both in the whole sentence.

Help 3 – German support: Prüfe erst jetzt die deutsche Bedeutung. Übersetze nicht nur das ähnlich aussehende Wort.

Help 4 – Feedback: Correct the word, then say the sentence again in a new context.
