E7 G - Understand a short blog post

Mini-Beschreibung: Read a short, age-appropriate blog post. Find the topic, the most important information and one simple opinion.

Zielgruppe: Englisch als erste Fremdsprache, Klasse 7, Baden-Württemberg, G-Niveau.

Sprachmodus: English first → try → context/media → hint → German help if needed. Du arbeitest mit kurzen Textteilen, wenigen neuen Wörtern, wiederkehrenden Chunks und klaren Satzmustern.

Einleitung

In this aiMOOC, you learn to understand a short blog post. You do not need to understand every word.

Your reading steps are:

  1. Notice: What can you see?
  2. Understand: What is the topic?
  3. Try: Find key information.
  4. Use: Say what the writer thinks.
  5. Communicate: Give a short answer.
  6. Feedback: Check and improve.
  7. Use again: Read a new mini-text.

Important: The blog profile in this course is fictional. It has no real username, school, address or private social-media data.

I can ...

At the end, you can say:

  1. I can find the topic of a short blog post.
  2. I can find key information such as who, when, where and what.
  3. I can find a simple opinion such as It was fun.
  4. I can use short evidence from the text.
  5. I can give a short spoken or written response.

Before you read: Look and guess

Try first – in English:

What might the blog be about?

  1. a skatepark
  2. a school day
  3. a shopping trip

Sentence starter: I think the blog is about ...

Hint: Look at the place in the picture.

Deutsch, falls nötig: Du musst noch nichts genau wissen. Vermute nur das Thema.

What is a blog post?

A short blog post can tell readers about an experience, an activity or an opinion.

For this course, look for only three things:

  1. Topic: What is the text mainly about?
  2. Key information: Who? When? Where? What happened?
  3. Opinion: What does the writer think or feel?

Listening and Viewing

First listening: Do not read yet

Ask a teacher or partner to read the blog text below slowly once. Keep the transcript closed.

Listen for only three things:

  1. Who is speaking?
  2. Where did the person go?
  3. Was the experience positive or negative?

Listening rule: First listen → then check the transcript.

Transcript – open only after your first listening.

Mia's Saturday

Hi! I'm Mia. On Saturday, I went to the new skatepark with my friend Sam. We took the bus at 11. The park was busy, but friendly. First, I watched Sam. Then I tried a small ramp. I was nervous, but it was fun. We ate sandwiches and drank water. My favourite part was learning one new move. I want to go again next weekend!

Quick check: Mia went to a skatepark. Her experience was mostly positive.

Viewing: A reading strategy

Watch only the beginning first. You do not need every word.

Viewing task: Listen for the idea that we can read in different ways for different purposes.

Easy takeaway: Sometimes read quickly for the main idea. Sometimes read slowly for details.

Deutsch, falls nötig: Erst grob lesen, dann gezielt nach Einzelinformationen suchen.

Reading

Step 1: Find the topic

Read the blog once.

Do not stop at every new word.

Question: What is the blog mainly about?

Answer frame: It is about Mia's visit to ...

Feedback: It is about Mia's visit to a skatepark.

Step 2: Find key information

Scan the text. Look for names, time words and actions.

Question Your short answer
Who? Mia and Sam
When? Saturday
Where? the new skatepark
How did they get there? by bus
What did Mia try? a small ramp

Reading chunk: First ... Then ... helps you see the order of events.

Step 3: Find the opinion

Look for feeling words.

Text clues:

I was nervous, but it was fun.

My favourite part was learning one new move.

I want to go again next weekend!

Question: Does Mia like the experience?

Answer frame: Yes. She thinks it is ...

Feedback: Yes. She thinks it is fun and wants to go again.

Reading strategy: Topic – detail – opinion

Remember this short routine:

  1. Topic: What is it about?
  2. Detail: Find two important facts.
  3. Opinion: Find one feeling or judgement.

You do not need a full translation.

Vocabulary in context

Keep the word list small.

Word or chunk Easy meaning Text clue
busy many people are there The park was busy.
friendly nice and welcoming busy, but friendly
nervous worried or unsure before trying the ramp
favourite part the part you like best learning one new move
go again return another time next weekend

Try first: Guess from the sentence.

German help if needed: busy = belebt, nervous = nervös, favourite = Lieblings-, go again = noch einmal hingehen.

Pronunciation

Say the chunks slowly, then at normal speed:

  1. On Saturday ...
  2. I went to the skatepark.
  3. It was fun.
  4. My favourite part was ...
  5. I want to go again.

Focus: Verständlichkeit ist wichtiger als Akzentfreiheit.

Clap the strong part:

SAT-ur-day

SKATE-park

FAV-our-ite

Speaking

Use short connected sentences.

Model:

The blog is about Mia's Saturday. She went to a skatepark with Sam. She tried a small ramp. She was nervous, but it was fun.

Your turn:

The blog is about ...

Mia went with ...

She tried ...

She thinks ...

Optional recording: You may record yourself privately on your own device. Recording is voluntary. Do not upload it unless your teacher has clearly asked for it and you have permission.

Writing

Write 3 to 4 short sentences about the blog.

Writing frame:

The blog is about ...

Mia went to ... with ...

She ...

She thinks ...

Word bank: Saturday – skatepark – Sam – bus – ramp – nervous – fun – favourite

Model answer: The blog is about Mia's Saturday. She went to a skatepark with Sam. She tried a small ramp. She thinks the visit was fun.

Mediation

Tell a German-speaking classmate the most important information in two short German sentences.

Do not translate every sentence.

Goal: Thema + wichtigste Information + Meinung.

Possible answer: Mia war am Samstag mit Sam in einem Skatepark. Sie war zuerst nervös, fand es aber schön und möchte wieder hingehen.

Functional grammar

We use the simple past for finished actions in the blog:

I went ...

We took ...

I watched ...

I tried ...

We ate ...

Use but for a contrast:

I was nervous, but it was fun.

Use because to give a reason:

I liked the visit because it was fun.

Mini-try: Complete: Mia wants to go again because ...

E-Ausblick: Past perfect – only notice it

This is not a G-level target here.

You may see a sentence like:

Before Mia went home, she had tried a new move.

Notice only: had tried happened before another past event.

No passive voice or reported speech is needed in this course.

Media strategy

When you read online:

  1. Look at the title and picture first.
  2. Read for the main idea.
  3. Find only the details you need.
  4. Check whether a profile is real or fictional before sharing information.
  5. Never copy private names, photos, locations or contact details into a school task without permission.

AI note: AI help is optional. Check whether the language level is right. Do not let AI replace your own text. Never send private recordings, names or images to an external AI tool without clear permission.

Mini-Transfer

Look at this second skatepark image.

Imagine a new mini-blog.

Choose one:

  1. I went to the skatepark after school.
  2. I went to the library on Saturday.
  3. I went to a sports club with a friend.

Say or write:

I went to ...

I was ...

My favourite part was ...

I want to ... again.

More viewing – optional challenge

This video is longer and more difficult. Use it only as an extra challenge.

Task: Watch a short part. Find one idea about reading from books or screens. Do not try to understand every word.
