E7 G - Describe a picture clearly
E7 G - Describe a picture clearly
Mini-description: Describe a picture in a clear order: place → people → actions → details.
Look first. No dictionary yet.
What can you see? Say three easy things in English.
Try:
- I can see ...
- There is / There are ...
- A person is ...
I can ...
After this aiMOOC, you can say:
- I can name the place.
- I can say who I can see.
- I can say what people are doing.
- I can add two useful details.
- I can speak for about 30–45 seconds.
- I can write 5–7 connected sentences.
Your goal is clear English. Your accent does not have to be perfect.
What you already know
You already know many useful words: boy, girl, man, woman, park, street, school, sit, stand, walk, read, play.
Quick try: Look at the picture again. Make one sentence with There is or There are.
Hint: One thing → There is ... More than one → There are ...
Deutsch nur wenn nötig: there is = da ist / es gibt; there are = da sind / es gibt.
Notice: A clear order
A good picture description is easier when you use the same four steps every time.
| Step | Question | Useful chunk |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Place | Where is the scene? | The picture shows ... |
| 2 People | Who can you see? | I can see ... |
| 3 Actions | What are they doing? | A boy is ... / Two people are ... |
| 4 Details | What else is important? | In the background ... / I can also see ... |
Remember: place → people → actions → details.
Media start: Look and speak

10-second challenge: Look at the picture for ten seconds. Then look away.
Say:
- one place
- two people
- one action
- one detail
Do not try to say everything.
Listening and viewing
Watch only the short part from about 0:22 to 1:58 first. Listen for ideas you already know.
First viewing — no transcript, no notes:
Which ideas do you notice?
- actions
- positions in the picture
- people
- useful sentence patterns
Second viewing: Pause after one useful sentence idea. Say your own sentence about the park picture.
Hint: You do not need every word. Listen for key words.
German help if needed: Achte auf bekannte Wörter und die Reihenfolge einer Bildbeschreibung. Du musst nicht alles verstehen.
Mini listening
Ask a partner or your teacher to read this text slowly once. Do not open the transcript first.
Task: Remember the place, one person, one action and one detail.
Transcript — open only after your first listening try:
The picture shows a park. I can see several people. A child is drinking water. Other people are standing nearby. In the background, there are rocks and trees. The scene looks warm and sunny.
Check: Did you catch at least three key ideas? If yes, that is enough.
Read a model

Model:
The picture shows a classroom. I can see several students. Some students are sitting at tables. They are studying. In the background, I can see more students. The room looks bright.
Notice: The model has only six sentences. It is clear because it follows the four steps.
Try: Find one sentence for place, one for people, one for actions and one for details.
Vocabulary in context
Learn words inside useful chunks.
| Job | Useful English |
|---|---|
| place | in a park, in a classroom, at a market, in the street |
| people | a boy, a girl, a man, a woman, two people, a group |
| actions | is sitting, is standing, is walking, is talking, is reading, is drinking |
| details | in the foreground, in the background, next to, behind, on the left, on the right |
Mini-rule: Use only words you need for the picture.
Place words
Watch the part you need. Stop when you have enough.
Now use the words in a real scene.

Try three chunks:
- On the left, ...
- On the right, ...
- In the background, ...
Hint: A short correct sentence is better than a long confusing sentence.
Functional grammar
There is / There are
Use these forms to say what is in the picture.
There is + one person or thing.
Example: There is a table.
There are + more than one.
Example: There are several people.
Present continuous
Use am / is / are + verb-ing for actions happening in the picture.
A girl is walking.
Two people are talking.
They are sitting.
Try: Make two action sentences about one of the pictures.
One optional E-lookahead
This is not your G-level learning goal.
Past perfect example: The picnic had started before the photo was taken.
You only need to notice this form. Do not use it in your picture description yet.
Pronunciation
Speak in short chunks.
The picture shows / a park.
In the background / I can see / two people.
A boy is / drinking water.
Do not rush. Make a small pause after each chunk.
For -ing, keep the ending short and clear: walk-ing, read-ing, drink-ing.
Partner check: Could your partner understand the sentence the first time? That is more important than sounding like a native speaker.
Speaking: 30–45 seconds
Choose one picture from this page.
Use this speaking frame:
The picture shows ...
I can see ...
There is / There are ...
A ... is ...
In the background ...
I can also see ...
Speak for 30–45 seconds. Aim for 4–6 connected sentences.
Level 1 help: Read the sentence starters.
Level 2 help: Use only the four words place – people – actions – details.
Level 3: Speak without notes.
Recording is optional. Keep recordings private unless you choose to share them. Do not upload personal recordings or photos to external services without permission.
Picture challenge
Round 1 — notice: Look for 15 seconds.
Round 2 — understand: Name the four steps.
Round 3 — try: Say four sentences.
Round 4 — feedback: A partner says one thing that was clear and asks one simple question.
Round 5 — improve: Add one missing detail.
Round 6 — use again: Give the description again in 30–45 seconds.
Writing
Write 5–7 sentences about the market picture.

Writing frame:
The picture shows ...
I can see ...
There is / There are ...
A person is ...
On the left / right, ...
In the background, ...
I can also see ...
Word bank: market, people, street, shop, stand, walk, talk, left, right, background.
Check before you finish:
- Did I name the place?
- Did I name people?
- Did I use at least one -ing action?
- Did I add one position word?
- Are my sentences easy to understand?
Mediation mini-task
A German-speaking classmate asks: „Was passiert auf dem Bild?“
Give only the most important information in English.
You do not need a word-for-word translation.
Try: The picture shows ... There are ... They are ...
German help if needed: Übertrage die Kernaussage, nicht jeden einzelnen Satz.
Feedback that helps
Use this short feedback pattern:
Clear: I understood ...
Next step: Add ...
Question: Where is ...? / What is ... doing?
Then speak or write your description one more time.
Mini-transfer

Imagine this picture is part of a school exchange presentation.
Give a 30-second description for a partner who cannot see the picture.
Start with the most useful information. Do not describe every object.
Safe and smart media use
Use school pictures, freely licensed pictures or fictional scenes.
Do not post private profiles, names, locations or personal social-media data.
If you use AI for feedback, first check whether the language fits Klasse 7, G-Niveau. Keep your own ideas and your own text. AI feedback can help you improve; it should not replace your work.
Do not send personal photos, recordings or texts to an external AI service unless this is allowed and you have chosen to do so.
Self-check
Tick what you can do now.
- I can start with The picture shows ...
- I can name people with simple words.
- I can describe an action with is / are + -ing.
- I can use a place phrase such as on the left or in the background.
- I can speak for about 30–45 seconds.
- I can improve my description after feedback.
If you tick 4–6 points: Try the final picture without the writing frame.
If you tick 0–3 points: Use the four-step plan one more time: place → people → actions → details.
