Your mission: You read a chapter. Then you pick the most important information and retell it in a short, clear way.

Important: Do not copy whole sentences from the book. Use your own words.

Read once for the big idea. Read again for details.

On Friday, Alex goes to the school library after lunch. Alex wants to show Sam a new sketchbook. But the sketchbook is not in the backpack. First, Alex checks the table. Next, Sam looks under two chairs. Then the librarian points to the reading corner. The sketchbook is there beside a blue book. Finally, Alex smiles and thanks Sam and the librarian.

Big question: What is this chapter mainly about?

Hint: Alex cannot find something.

Find the important information

Use these five story questions:

Rule: Keep only information that helps another person understand the chapter.

Put events in order

Useful sequence words:

First = event 1
Next = event 2
Then = event 3
Finally = last event

Example: First Alex checks the table. Next Sam looks under chairs. Then the librarian helps. Finally Alex finds the sketchbook.

Deutsch-Hilfe: first = zuerst, next = als Nächstes, then = dann, finally = schließlich.

Practise

Build a short retell

Use this simple plan:

Step	Sentence starter

Your example retell:

This chapter is about Alex and a missing sketchbook. First, Alex looks on the table. Next, Sam looks under the chairs. Then the librarian points to the reading corner. Finally, Alex finds the sketchbook and is happy.

Notice: The retell is shorter than the chapter. It uses own words and keeps the main events.

Grammar in use: simple past for finished events

You are telling what happened in the chapter. Use simple past forms you already know.

Use it: Alex went to the library. Sam looked under the chairs. Alex found the sketchbook.

Pronunciation and speaking

Say these words slowly, then in a sentence:

Speaking rhythm: Make the sequence words clear. Pause a little before the next event.

Example: First, Alex checks the table. / Next, Sam helps.

Goal: Be easy to understand. You do not need to sound like a native speaker.

Private practice: You can speak to a partner, whisper-read, or record yourself on your own device. Recording is voluntary. Do not upload it unless your teacher has clearly asked for a safe school upload.

Watch for the order words first – next – then – after that – at the end.

Hint: It begins with f... or you can say at the end.

Use

Your retell in five steps

Choose a chapter you have really read in class or at home.

Write five key words only.
Add one simple picture or symbol for the main idea.
Write four to six sentences in your own words.
Use at least two sequence words.
Read your retell aloud once.

Safe media rule: Use your own drawing or a reusable image your teacher has approved. Do not upload book pages or personal photos.

Can you remove one unimportant detail?
Can you improve one verb or sequence word?

Example before feedback: Alex looked everywhere. It was bad.

Example after feedback: Alex looked on the table and under the chairs, but the sketchbook was not there.

Change the audience: Retell the same chapter once for a classmate and once for a younger learner. Notice what you simplify.

Important or extra: Mark details from a chapter as important or extra and explain two of your decisions.
Retell without copying: Read a short section, close the book and retell it from five key words only.
Compare two retells: Compare two short retells of the same chapter. Explain which details both versions need to be understandable without ranking the writers.
Mini book report: Combine your retell with one short personal comment about the chapter and present it for about two minutes.

Lernkontrolle

Select and explain: You get ten details from a fictional chapter. Choose the five details you need for a clear retell and explain your choices.
Repair a retell: A retell has events in the wrong order. Put them in a useful order and add sequence words.
Make it shorter: Reduce an eight-sentence retell to five sentences without losing the main problem or ending.
Use your own words: Rewrite three copied sentences from a fictional chapter as a short retell in simpler language.
Speak from notes: Use five key words and one picture to give a short spoken retell. Afterwards, name one thing you would improve.
