Einleitung

Mini-Beschreibung: Connect simple ideas with because, although, when, while, so that and other familiar connectors. You learn to explain reasons, show contrast, talk about time and express purpose.

Level: English as a first foreign language, Year 7, M-level, Baden-Württemberg.

Look at the speech bubbles. Imagine two students planning a school activity. Which words can connect their ideas?

Try first: because – although – when – while – so that

German help if needed: Die Wörter verbinden Gedanken. Sie zeigen zum Beispiel Grund, Gegensatz, Zeit oder Zweck.

I can ...

Adverbial clauses: I can connect two ideas with a suitable connector.
Reason: I can explain why something happens with because.
Contrast: I can show an unexpected contrast with although.
Time: I can connect events with when and while.
Purpose: I can say why somebody does something with so that.
Speaking: I can react, ask a short follow-up question and give a reason.
Writing: I can write a short connected paragraph instead of many separate sentences.

Before you start

You already know simple sentences such as:

We stayed inside. It was raining.

Now connect them:

We stayed inside because it was raining.

Another example:

Although it was raining, we went outside.

Notice: The connector changes the relationship between the ideas.

Media warm-up: Connect the situation

Look at the photo for 20 seconds.

Say one thing that may happen because the students are working together.
Say one thing that may happen while they are speaking.
Say one purpose with so that.
Compare two ideas with although.

Model: They work in small groups so that everyone can speak.

Hint: Do not worry about perfect pronunciation. Make your meaning clear.

Input: Connecting ideas

Adverbial clauses add useful information to a main idea. At this level, focus on the meaning first.

Connector	Job	Example
because	reason	I took my jacket because it was cold.
although	contrast	Although I was tired, I finished the poster.
when	time	Call me when you arrive.
while	two actions or situations at the same time	I listened while Maya explained the idea.
so that	purpose	We wrote notes so that we could remember the details.
if	condition	We can work outside if the weather is good.
before	time	Check your text before you send it.
after	time	We talked after the lesson ended.

Key idea: Choose the connector because of the meaning, not because it “sounds good”.

Notice the clause pattern

A useful pattern is:

main idea + connector + extra information

We left early because the bus was full.

The adverbial clause can sometimes come first:

Although the task was difficult, we finished it.

With a clause first, a comma is usually useful in school writing:

When the bell rang, we packed our bags.

Do not build very long sentences yet. One clear connection is better than three unclear connections.

Connector traffic lights

Use the traffic light as a thinking tool.

Green – reason or purpose: because, so that

Yellow – time: when, while, before, after

Red – contrast or condition: although, if

This is only a memory aid. The real choice depends on meaning.

Functional grammar: What do you want to say?

I stayed at home because I felt ill.

What is surprising or different?

Although the café was busy, we found a table.

Time

When did it happen?

When the film ended, we walked home.

What happened at the same time?

While I was waiting, I read the message.

Purpose

What was the aim?

I spoke slowly so that everyone could understand me.

Common mistakes

Not: Because it was late. Better: We went home because it was late.

Not: Although it was raining, but we played football. Better: Although it was raining, we played football.

Not: I used headphones so that listen better. Better: I used headphones so that I could listen better.

Tip: Read the whole sentence aloud. Can another person understand the relationship between the ideas?

Listening and Viewing

The BBC Learning English video focuses on ways to express contrast. For this course, listen especially for although and while.

First viewing – gist

What is the main grammar idea?
Which connector do you hear more than once?
Does the speaker use contrast to show two similar ideas or two different ideas?

Second viewing – notice

Pause after an example with although. Say the two ideas separately. Then connect them again.

Challenge: Make your own example about school, hobbies or free time.

German hint if needed: Bei although stehen zwei Aussagen in einem unerwarteten Gegensatz.

A second listening focus

Listen for familiar connectors such as because, although and when.

Do not copy every sentence. Write only:

one connector you hear,
one example idea,
one question you still have.

Then compare with a partner.

Listening strategy

At natural speed, you do not need every word.

Listen for signals: because → reason, although → contrast, when/while → time.

Feedback check: If your answer does not fit the connector’s job, listen again to the sentence before and after it.

Reading

A school project

Read the short text first without translating every word.

Green Break Project

Mia, Ben and Noor want to make their school break more relaxing. They choose a quiet corner of the school yard because many students want a place to sit. Although the area is small, they think it can work well. Ben measures the space while Mia writes down ideas. They talk to classmates so that the plan includes different wishes. When they get feedback, they change two parts of the design. They also add a box for games because some students want to be active. Before they present the plan, they practise together. Noor speaks first, while Ben shows a simple drawing. The group is nervous, although they know their plan well. After the presentation, several students ask questions, and the group explains its choices clearly.

Reading task

Find two connectors for time.
Find two connectors for reason or purpose.
Find one example of contrast.
Explain in one English sentence why the group talks to classmates.

Mini-transfer: Change one detail in the project and add one new sentence with a connector.

Read with a purpose

Look at the picture and make a prediction before reading a new school text:

I think the students are ... because ...

After reading, check your prediction.

Feedback: A good prediction can be wrong. It is useful if you can explain it with evidence.

Vocabulary in context

Learn words together with useful sentence patterns.

Pronunciation

Your goal is clear meaning, not accent-free speech.

Say these sentences naturally:

I stayed inside because it was raining.

Although I was tired, I finished the task.

While I was waiting, I checked my notes.

I spoke clearly so that everyone could follow.

Notice: Connector words often help listeners understand the direction of the sentence. Do not rush over them.

Partner feedback: Could your partner hear the connector clearly? Could they understand the relationship?

Speaking

Ask, react, give a reason

Work with a partner.

Student A: I prefer working in pairs.

Student B: Why?

Student A: Because I can compare ideas.

Student B: I understand, although I sometimes work better alone.

Now change the topic:

homework,
school trips,
sport,
music,
group projects.

Useful reactions: Really? / I see. / Why? / That makes sense. / I agree because ... / I’m not sure because ...

Picture talk

Speak for about 30–45 seconds.

Use at least three connectors.

Start if needed: The two people are talking while ... They may use laptops because ... Although ..., they ...

From short sentences to a connected paragraph

Start with simple ideas:

Our class planned a game afternoon. We wanted everyone to join. The weather was bad. We stayed inside. We prepared different games. Students could choose.

Connect them:

Our class planned a game afternoon because we wanted everyone to join. Although the weather was bad, the plan still worked. We stayed inside and prepared different games so that students could choose.

Now write your own paragraph of 70–100 words about a school activity, hobby project or weekend plan.

Use:

at least one because,
at least one time connector,
at least one connector for contrast or purpose.

Self-feedback before you finish:

Read each connector. Ask: Does the meaning really fit?

Mediation

A German-speaking classmate asks what the English notice means:

Please arrive ten minutes early so that we can start on time. Although the activity is outdoors, bring a notebook. We will move inside if the weather changes.

Explain the important information in simple German. Do not translate every word.

Then tell an English-speaking partner this German message:

Kommt früher, weil wir die Gruppen vor Beginn einteilen.

A possible start is:

Please come early because ...

Controlled outlook

At M-level you may meet other tense forms while reading. Do not make them the focus here.

When we arrived, the group had already started.

The past perfect can show that one past action happened before another past action. For this course, notice it and understand the sequence. Your main task is still to connect ideas clearly with familiar connectors.

Passive voice and reported speech are not needed for this unit.

Safe and smart media use

Use fictional profiles and school-safe examples. Do not share private social-media data.

Audio or video recordings for speaking practice are optional and should stay private unless your teacher gives a clear, safe task and you agree to share them.

Do not upload classmates’ voices, faces or texts without permission.

If you use an AI tool, check whether its language matches your level. Use feedback to improve your own text; do not replace your own writing with an AI-generated version.
