Einleitung

Look at the picture. What can you see?

Try first:

  1. I can see ...
  2. They are playing ...
  3. I think the activity is ...

Mini-help: team = Team, court = Spielfeld, ball = Ball.

In this aiMOOC you learn to talk about sports and free-time activities in simple English. You say what you can do, what you like, how often you do it and what you did before.

I can ...

  1. I can name common sports and activities.
  2. I can say what I can and cannot do.
  3. I can say what I like or do not like doing.
  4. I can ask another person about free time.
  5. I can tell a short past experience.
  6. I can write a short text about an activity.

Vorwissen: What do you know?

Say or write three words you already know.

Word bank: football – basketball – swimming – cycling – hiking – tennis – skateboarding – gaming

Try: I know ... / I like ... / I don't like ...

Notice: Words in context

Do not learn a long list. Use short chunks.

Activity Useful chunk
basketball play basketball
tennis play tennis
swimming go swimming
cycling go cycling
hiking go hiking
skateboarding go skateboarding

Notice: We often use play with ball games and go + -ing with activities.

Audio: Listen and repeat

First listen. Then repeat once or twice.

Say: basketball

Say: swim

Pronunciation goal: Be clear. You do not need a perfect accent.

Understand: Listening and viewing

First watch: Watch from about 0:30 to 3:30. Do not read a transcript yet.

Try to catch:

  1. three free-time activities
  2. one phrase with like
  3. one phrase about how often somebody does an activity

Hint: Listen for familiar words first. You do not need every word.

German help if needed: Hör zuerst auf bekannte Sport- und Freizeitwörter. Stoppe nach kurzen Abschnitten.

After your first try: Rewatch with subtitles or the transcript if available.

Quick listening check

Which ideas fit the video section?

  1. People talk about free-time activities.
  2. They use phrases such as "I like ...".
  3. They add details about when or how often they do an activity.

Feedback: If you found the topic and one detail, that is a good first listening result.

Reading: Three short profiles

These profiles are fictional.

Mia, 13: I like swimming and cycling. I can swim well, but I can't do tricks on a skateboard. I usually go swimming on Saturday. Last summer I tried kayaking. It was fun.

Jay, 12: Basketball is my favourite sport. I play twice a week. I can pass and shoot, but I want to get better at dribbling. Yesterday I played with my cousin.

Noor, 13: I don't like team sports very much. I love hiking and taking photos. I sometimes go hiking with my family. Last weekend we walked for two hours.

Try:

  1. Who likes a team sport?
  2. Who tried a new activity last summer?
  3. Who likes an outdoor activity with photos?

Hint: Scan for basketball, last summer and photos.

Vocabulary: Build useful chunks

Use words in short phrases:

  1. ability: I can swim. / I can't skate.
  2. preference: I like cycling. / I love hiking. / I don't like running.
  3. frequency: I usually play on Friday. / I sometimes go swimming.
  4. experience: I tried kayaking. / It was fun.

Mini-transfer: Change one word in each chunk and make it true for you.

Grammar for communication

can / can't: ability

I can swim. I can't skateboard. Can you play tennis? – Yes, I can. / No, I can't.

Rule: after can and can't, use the basic verb: can swim, not "can swimming".

Try:

  1. I can ...
  2. I can't ...
  3. Can you ...?

like + -ing: preferences

I like playing basketball. I love going cycling. I don't like running.

Try: I like ... because it is fun / relaxing / exciting.

Help: fun = macht Spaß; relaxing = entspannend; exciting = spannend.

How often?

I always / usually / sometimes / never ...

Examples: I usually play football after school. I sometimes go swimming at the weekend.

Use only one frequency word first.

Past experience: simple past

Use a short past sentence for an experience:

Last weekend I played tennis. I tried climbing last year. It was difficult, but fun.

Keep it simple: time phrase + past activity + short opinion.

Speaking: Ask and answer

Use this model.

A: What do you do in your free time? B: I like cycling. A: Can you cycle fast? B: Yes, I can. A: How often do you go cycling? B: I usually go on Sunday. A: Did you go last weekend? B: Yes. I went with my brother.

Speaking frame:

  1. I like ...
  2. I can ...
  3. I usually ...
  4. Last ... I ...

Feedback check: Did you give four short connected answers? Then your message works.

Writing: My activity

Write 5–7 short sentences.

Writing frame:

My favourite activity is ... . I like it because ... . I can ... . I can't ... yet. I usually ... . Last ... I ... . I want to ... next.

Word bank: fun – relaxing – exciting – easy – difficult – with friends – after school – at the weekend

Check your text:

  1. Is every sentence easy to understand?
  2. Did you use can + basic verb?
  3. Did you use like + -ing?
  4. Did you add one past experience?

Mediation: Help a visitor

Situation: A new English-speaking student asks about a German school activity.

German note: "Am Freitag gibt es nach der Schule eine Sport-AG. Man kann Basketball oder Badminton spielen. Anfänger sind willkommen."

Say the key information in simple English. Do not translate every word.

Starter: On Friday, there is ... after school. You can ... . Beginners ...

Media smart and safe

Use media to practise, not to replace your own work.

  1. Record your voice only if you want to. Keep recordings private unless you choose to share them.
  2. Do not upload classmates' voices, photos or names without permission.
  3. If you use an AI tool, check its level and feedback. Keep your own wording and ideas.
  4. Clear speech is more important than sounding like a native speaker.

Self-check: Can do

Choose: Yes – almost – not yet.

  1. I can name at least five activities.
  2. I can say one thing I can do and one thing I cannot do.
  3. I can say what I like and how often I do it.
  4. I can ask two questions about free time.
  5. I can tell one short past experience.
  6. I can write 5–7 connected sentences.

If you choose not yet, go back to one model and try again.
