Academic Research Skills
Introduction
Academic Research Skills helps you turn curiosity into a focused question, find useful information, judge whether sources deserve your trust, take accurate notes, combine evidence, and give credit to the people whose work you use. This aiMOOC is designed for Grades 9–10 and is useful in English Language Arts, History, Science, Social studies, and other subjects that require evidence-based work.
Research is not simply "finding facts." Good research is a cycle of asking, searching, checking, reading, thinking, revising, and communicating. You may return to an earlier step when a new source changes your question or when your search produces weak evidence.

Learning Goals
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- Develop a research question: Turn a broad topic into a clear, focused, researchable question.
- Build a search strategy: Identify key concepts, choose keywords and synonyms, and use search tools efficiently.
- Evaluate sources: Judge relevance, authority, evidence, currency, purpose, and outside verification.
- Take research notes: Separate your own ideas from quotations, paraphrases, summaries, and source details.
- Synthesize evidence: Compare sources and combine ideas instead of writing one source summary after another.
- Cite sources: Give credit and make your evidence traceable.
- Work with academic integrity: Avoid plagiarism and use digital and AI tools responsibly.
The Research Process
Academic research is usually iterative: you improve your work as you learn. A useful sequence is to understand the assignment, choose a topic, ask a question, search, evaluate, read and take notes, synthesize, draft, cite, revise, and communicate your findings. The sequence is not a one-way staircase. A strong source might suggest a better keyword, and a surprising disagreement between sources might lead you to refine your question.


Start with the Assignment
Before searching, identify the task. Ask: What product must you create? How long should it be? Which types of sources are allowed or required? Which citation style does your teacher expect? What is the deadline? Are images, interviews, surveys, experiments, or AI tools allowed? Good researchers plan around these requirements instead of discovering them at the end.
Create a simple timeline with checkpoints for topic choice, searching, note-taking, drafting, citation checking, and revision. Leave time to change direction if your first approach does not work.
From a Broad Topic to a Research Question
A broad topic such as "social media," "renewable energy," or "school uniforms" is too large for a short school research project. A useful research question is clear, focused, researchable, and complex enough to require evidence. Questions beginning with "how," "why," or "to what extent" often invite analysis, but the best wording depends on your subject.
A weak question asks for a simple fact: "When was the first solar cell invented?" A stronger question asks for analysis: "How have falling solar-panel costs affected household adoption in one country since 2015?" The stronger question defines a topic, a relationship to investigate, and a manageable scope.
Use these checks:
- Clarity: Can another student understand exactly what you want to investigate?
- Focus: Can you answer it well within the time and length of the assignment?
- Researchability: Is there evidence you can realistically access?
- Complexity: Does the question require explanation, comparison, interpretation, or judgment rather than a one-word answer?
- Neutrality: Does the wording avoid assuming the conclusion before you research?
Finding Information Strategically
A search engine and a library database are not the same tool. Search engines cover a huge range of public web content. Library catalogs and academic databases organize books, articles, reports, and other materials selected for research and study. The best tool depends on your question.

Identify Concepts, Keywords, and Synonyms
Do not type your whole research question into every database. First, underline the main concepts. For the question "How does sleep duration affect attention in teenagers?" the main concepts are sleep, attention, and teenagers.
Build a keyword bank:
- Core concept: sleep
- Alternative terms: sleep duration, sleep time, sleep deprivation
- Related population terms: teenagers, adolescents, secondary students
- Related outcome terms: attention, concentration, focus
Different authors may use different terms for the same idea, so synonyms increase your chances of finding useful material.
Use Boolean Operators and Phrase Searching
Many databases use Boolean operators to combine concepts. AND usually narrows a search because every result must include both concepts. OR usually broadens a search because a result may contain either term. NOT can exclude a term, but use it carefully because you may remove useful results.
Quotation marks often search for an exact phrase, such as "sleep deprivation". Database rules vary, so check the help page when a search behaves unexpectedly.

Try a search such as:
("teenagers" OR adolescents) AND ("sleep duration" OR "sleep deprivation") AND attention

Improve a Search Instead of Starting Over
If you get too many results, add a specific concept, use a phrase search, filter by date or source type, or choose a more precise keyword. If you get too few results, remove a narrow concept, add synonyms with OR, try a broader term, or check spelling.
When you find one strong source, examine its title, abstract, subject terms, bibliography, and key vocabulary. Those clues can lead you to better searches and additional sources. This is sometimes called citation chasing when you follow references backward or look for later works that cite the source.
Understanding Source Types
The label "good source" depends on the research question. A source that is excellent for one purpose may be poor for another.
Primary sources provide original or first-hand evidence relevant to a question, such as a diary, speech, photograph, interview, survey response, dataset, experiment report, or original research article. What counts as primary depends on what you are studying.
Secondary sources analyze, interpret, compare, or explain primary sources and other evidence. Examples include many scholarly analyses, history books, review essays, and critical articles.
Tertiary or reference sources summarize established information and can help you learn vocabulary, dates, names, and background. Encyclopedias are useful starting points, but a final research paper usually needs stronger evidence that directly addresses the question.

Scholarly, Popular, and Professional Sources
A scholarly source is written for an academic audience and usually includes detailed references. A research article often explains its methods, evidence, and limitations. Some scholarly journal articles are peer reviewed, meaning experts evaluate the work before publication. Peer review is an important quality-control process, but it does not guarantee that every claim is correct.
A popular source is written for a broad audience. News reports, magazines, podcasts, and public websites can be valuable for current events, public reactions, or examples, but you should still evaluate their evidence and purpose.
A professional or government source can provide standards, statistics, reports, policies, and expert guidance. Its usefulness depends on the authority of the organization, the quality of the evidence, and the needs of your question.

Evaluating Sources
Do not judge a source only by how polished it looks, where it appears in search results, or whether it agrees with you. Information literacy requires you to investigate the source and its context.
Use these questions:
- Relevance: Does this source actually help answer your research question?
- Authority: Who created or published it, and what relevant expertise or responsibility do they have?
- Evidence: Are claims supported by data, references, methods, quotations, or other checkable evidence?
- Currency: Is the date appropriate for your topic? A recent source may matter in fast-changing fields, while an older primary source may be essential for history.
- Purpose and perspective: Is the source mainly trying to inform, persuade, sell, entertain, advocate, or document? What viewpoints or interests may shape it?
- Verification: What do other reliable sources say about the same claim?
Read Laterally
When a website makes an important claim, do not stay on that page and simply read more of it. Lateral reading means opening other reliable sources to investigate the author, organization, claim, or original evidence. Search for independent coverage. Trace a quotation, image, statistic, or dramatic claim back to its original context when possible.
Be especially careful with screenshots, short clips, reposts, AI-generated summaries, and statistics without links to the original source. A piece of content can be real but still misleading if context has been removed.

Compare Before You Trust
For an important claim, compare more than one source. Agreement between independent, well-supported sources can increase confidence. Disagreement is not automatically a problem; it can show that the issue is complex, the evidence is incomplete, the sources use different methods, or the field is changing.
Create a source-check note with the author, publisher, date, main claim, evidence used, possible limitations, and what another reliable source says. This turns evaluation into a visible research habit.
Reading and Taking Notes
Research notes should help you think, not just store copied sentences. Record enough source information at the moment you take a note so that you can identify and cite it later.

A simple research-notes table can include the source, page or section, key idea, evidence, your paraphrase, a short exact quotation if needed, and your own response. Clearly mark exact quotations with quotation marks in your notes. This reduces the risk of accidentally treating copied wording as your own later.
Quote, Paraphrase, or Summarize?
A quotation reproduces the source's exact words. Use it when the wording itself matters, and mark it clearly with quotation marks or the formatting required by your citation style.
A paraphrase restates a specific idea in your own wording and sentence structure. Changing only a few words is not enough. A paraphrase still needs a citation because the idea came from the source.
A summary compresses the main point of a longer passage, article, chapter, speech, or set of findings. It also needs a citation when the ideas are not your own.
After reading a passage, try closing the source and explaining the idea from memory in plain language. Then reopen the source to check that your version is accurate and has not copied distinctive wording.
From Notes to Synthesis
Synthesis means combining evidence from multiple sources to answer your question. It is more than writing "Source A says..." and then "Source B says...."
Group notes by idea, theme, cause, effect, method, agreement, disagreement, or evidence type. Then ask:
- Where do sources agree?
- Where do they disagree?
- Do they use different kinds of evidence?
- Which source gives stronger support for a particular claim, and why?
- What pattern appears only when you compare several sources?
- What conclusion can you defend without claiming more than the evidence supports?
A useful paragraph often combines your own claim, evidence from more than one source, analysis of how that evidence relates to the claim, and a transition to the next idea.
Citation and Academic Integrity
Citations do several jobs at once: they give credit, show where evidence came from, help readers verify claims, and make the connections between your work and earlier work visible. Citation styles such as MLA, APA, and Chicago organize this information differently. Follow the style your teacher or subject requires.

Avoiding Plagiarism
Plagiarism means presenting another person's words or ideas as if they were your own instead of giving proper credit. It may happen through direct copying, close paraphrasing, missing citations, or careless note-taking. Your school may define additional forms of academic misconduct, so follow its rules.

Build good habits:
- Record source details while researching, not at the end.
- Mark exact quotations clearly in your notes.
- Cite paraphrases and summaries as well as direct quotations.
- Match every in-text citation to the correct entry in your Works Cited or reference list.
- Check the final draft for accidental copied wording and missing attribution.
- Ask your teacher or librarian when you are unsure whether something needs citation.
Using Generative AI Responsibly
Generative AI tools can produce fluent text that contains errors, invented details, or inaccurate citations. If your school permits AI tools, treat their output as something to check, not as automatic evidence. Never invent a source because a tool suggests one. Open the original source and verify its author, title, date, publication, and claim before using it.
Use AI only within your teacher's rules. It may be useful for brainstorming keywords, generating questions to investigate, or testing whether your explanation is clear, but your research decisions, source evaluation, evidence, and final reasoning should remain visible. Protect private information and do not upload material you are not allowed to share.
Managing a Research Project
Strong research is easier when you can see your progress. Keep a research log that records searches tried, useful keywords, databases or websites used, promising sources, dead ends, decisions, and next steps. Save stable links or identifiers such as a DOI when available.
Use file names that make versions easy to identify. Back up important work. Keep your notes, source list, and draft connected so that evidence is not separated from its origin.
Before submitting, use this final check:
- Does the paper answer the research question rather than merely describe the topic?
- Does each important claim have appropriate evidence?
- Have you represented sources accurately and fairly?
- Have you compared sources instead of relying on only one perspective?
- Are quotations, paraphrases, summaries, images, data, and ideas credited correctly?
- Do in-text citations and the final source list match?
- Have you followed the assignment rules for format, length, media, collaboration, and AI use?
