Introduction

Your future career is not a single decision that you must get right at age 14, 15, or 16. It is a process of learning about yourself, exploring possibilities, building useful skills, testing ideas, and adjusting your plans when you gain new information. Career planning helps you make informed next steps without pretending that you can predict your whole working life.

For Grades 9–10, the most useful question is often not “What job will I have forever?” but “What can I learn about myself and the world of work, and what can I try next?” Good planning combines self-awareness, career exploration, decision-making, and lifelong learning.

  1. Self-awareness: identify interests, values, strengths, preferred working conditions, and areas you want to develop.
  2. Career exploration: investigate occupations, education and training routes, and changing labour-market needs.
  3. Transferable skills: recognize abilities such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork, creativity, and self-management that can be useful in many settings.
  4. Digital literacy: use digital tools and artificial intelligence thoughtfully, safely, and critically.
  5. Career decision-making: compare options using evidence instead of relying only on stereotypes, status, or salary.
  6. Goal setting: turn a broad career idea into small experiments and realistic next steps.

Career opportunities are influenced by technology, the green transition, demographic change, economic conditions, local opportunities, and social expectations. Because these factors change, a strong plan should be flexible. It should give you direction while leaving room to learn and change your mind.


Career Planning as a Learning Cycle

Career planning works best as a cycle rather than a straight line. You gather information, make a small decision, take action, reflect on what happened, and update your plan. This approach reduces the pressure to find one “perfect” career.

A plan becomes stronger when it is based on evidence. For example, liking science does not automatically mean that medicine is your best fit. You might also enjoy laboratory work, environmental technology, engineering, science communication, health technology, or technical training. Exploring several options can reveal paths you had not considered.


Interests, Values, Strengths, and Needs

Interests are topics or activities that attract your attention. Values are principles or conditions that matter to you, such as helping others, creativity, stability, independence, teamwork, environmental responsibility, or learning. Strengths are abilities you can use effectively now, while development areas are abilities you can improve. Needs and constraints include practical realities such as location, finances, accessibility, family responsibilities, qualifications, and available training.

These ideas overlap, but they are not the same. You can be good at something without enjoying it, and you can enjoy something before you are good at it. A career decision should therefore use several kinds of evidence.

A useful self-check is to collect examples. Instead of saying “I am a good communicator,” identify a situation: “During a group science project, I summarized our ideas, asked quieter classmates for their views, and presented our conclusion clearly.” Specific evidence helps you understand your real skills and later gives you material for applications and interviews.


Avoiding Career Stereotypes

Career choices can be narrowed by stereotypes about gender, social background, disability, income, prestige, or which subjects are “for” certain people. Treat stereotypes as claims to investigate, not as rules. Ask what qualifications are actually required, what the work is really like, which routes lead into the field, and whether the information comes from a reliable source.

  2. Qualifications: education, training, licences, or certifications that may be required.
  3. Working conditions: location, schedule, physical demands, teamwork, travel, and work environment.
  4. Skills: technical, communication, problem-solving, digital, and self-management skills.
  5. Career pathway: possible entry points, apprenticeships, vocational routes, college routes, and progression.
  6. Labour market: evidence about demand, change, and regional differences.
  7. Personal fit: what attracts you, what concerns you, and what you still need to find out.

Reliable sources can include public employment services, official occupational databases, education providers, professional associations, employers, unions, and carefully checked research reports. Social media can provide personal stories, but one person's experience is not proof that a whole occupation works the same way.

An informational interview is a conversation in which you ask someone about their work in order to learn, not to ask for a job. You might ask what a normal week looks like, which skills matter most, what training routes exist, what surprised them, and what advice they would give a student.

Workplace visits, career fairs, job-shadowing opportunities, volunteering, school projects, and short practical experiences can help you compare expectations with reality. Always follow school safeguarding rules, obtain any required permission, and protect personal information.

The OECD describes career development as a lifelong process and emphasizes that young people benefit when they explore, experience, and think about possible futures in work. Its 2025 report The State of Global Teenage Career Preparation also highlights widespread uncertainty among teenagers. This means that direct encounters with people and workplaces can add important evidence to classroom research.


Future Skills: Building a Flexible Skill Portfolio

Future skills are abilities that help you learn, work with others, use technology, solve unfamiliar problems, and adapt when tasks change. No list can predict every future job. A better strategy is to build a skill portfolio that combines human, digital, technical, and career-management abilities.

The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 employer survey reported strong demand for analytical thinking, resilience and flexibility, leadership and social influence, creative thinking, technological literacy, empathy and active listening, and curiosity and lifelong learning. It also projected rapid growth in the importance of AI and big data, networks and cybersecurity, and technological literacy through 2030. These are employer expectations, not guarantees. Different industries, countries, and individual jobs will need different combinations of skills.

A transferable skill can be useful in different subjects, projects, occupations, or life situations. Transferable skills matter because job titles can change while underlying abilities remain valuable.

Digital literacy is more than operating a device. It includes finding information, evaluating sources, creating digital content, protecting privacy, understanding basic cybersecurity, communicating appropriately online, and choosing the right tool for a task.

Artificial intelligence can support learning and work, but useful AI literacy includes knowing its limits. Generative AI can produce convincing errors, reflect bias in data, and create privacy or copyright concerns. When you use AI:

The transition toward more sustainable energy, transport, buildings, food systems, manufacturing, and services can change skill needs across many occupations. Environmental stewardship is not only relevant to environmental scientists. People in construction, finance, design, logistics, agriculture, engineering, tourism, public services, and many other fields can make decisions that affect resources and emissions.

Systems thinking means looking at how parts of a situation influence one another. For example, a new transport system affects cost, energy use, accessibility, land use, safety, and travel time. Practising systems thinking helps you avoid simple answers to complex problems.


English Skills for Career Development

Career planning is also an opportunity to practise English for real purposes. You may need to read complex information, compare sources, ask precise questions, describe your strengths, explain evidence, write formal messages, and speak confidently to unfamiliar people.


Reading and Vocabulary

When you read an occupation profile or job advertisement, underline action verbs such as analyse, design, coordinate, maintain, support, present, or evaluate. These verbs reveal what people actually do. Then notice skill words such as accurate, collaborative, independent, adaptable, or customer-focused.

Do not assume that two similar job titles have identical meanings. Compare the responsibilities and entry requirements. Build a vocabulary bank with the term, a clear definition, and one example sentence related to work or education.

Having alternatives is a strength. Plan A can be your current preferred route. Plan B can reach a similar goal through a different route. Plan C can be a useful option if your interests, circumstances, or opportunities change. The aim is not to expect failure; it is to stay flexible.

For example, someone interested in designing digital products might explore university study, vocational training, an apprenticeship, or a portfolio-based route depending on the country and field. Each route should be checked for real entry requirements and costs.


From Goals to Career Experiments

A broad goal becomes useful when it leads to action. Instead of “I want a creative career,” you might decide to complete a small design project, interview a designer, compare two training routes, and reflect on what you enjoyed.

A SMART goal is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. However, career learning also needs experiments. An experiment is a small, safe action that gives you evidence about an option.

Networking and Mentoring

Networking means building respectful relationships through which people exchange information, help, and opportunities. For students, networking can begin with teachers, family contacts, community groups, career events, coaches, alumni, or approved online professional spaces. It is not about collecting as many contacts as possible.

A mentor can offer perspective and feedback, but no mentor should make your decisions for you. Use school-approved channels, follow safeguarding rules, and involve a trusted adult when appropriate.

Review your career plan when you gain important new evidence: after a project, a conversation, a course, a work experience, a change in grades, or a change in your interests. A useful review asks:
