Career Exploration and Future Skills



Introduction

What could your future look like? You do not need to choose one lifelong job in Grades 7–8. This is a good time to become a career explorer: notice what interests you, discover different kinds of work, practise useful skills, and learn how education can open pathways. Career exploration is not about finding one perfect answer. It is about asking better questions and gathering evidence.

A career can include many roles, projects, learning experiences, and changes over time. People may work in different organisations, change occupations, study again, start a business, care for others, volunteer, or combine several kinds of work. Your interests may also change as you gain new experiences. That is why a flexible plan is often more useful than a fixed prediction.

OECD research on teenage career readiness shows that students benefit from active career-development experiences and from thinking clearly about possible futures.[1] A 2025 OECD report also found that many teenagers remain uncertain about career expectations and that participation in career-development activities is associated with clearer plans and better later outcomes.[2]

In this aiMOOC, you will build self-knowledge, investigate career fields, compare education and training pathways, practise future skills, and create evidence of your learning. You will also learn to question stereotypes and to treat career information as something that should be checked rather than simply believed.


Start With Yourself


Interests, Strengths, Values, and Preferences

Career exploration begins with self-knowledge. Four useful questions are different from one another:

Question What it helps you notice Example
What interests me? Topics and activities that attract your attention. Designing, animals, sport, coding, languages, fixing things, helping people.
What strengths am I developing? Things you can already do or improve with practice. Explaining ideas, organising, drawing, measuring, listening, building.
What values matter to me? Principles that make work feel meaningful or fair. Creativity, security, service, independence, teamwork, sustainability.
What conditions help me work well? Environments and routines that support your best effort. Quiet focus, movement, teamwork, clear instructions, variety, outdoor work.

These four areas can guide exploration, but they do not decide your future. A quiz or interest test can suggest ideas, yet no test can measure your whole personality, your future growth, or every opportunity that may become available.

Try keeping a short evidence log for two weeks. When you enjoy an activity or solve a difficult problem, record what you did, what skill you used, and what made the activity interesting. Real examples are often more useful than vague labels such as "good at science" or "creative."


Strengths Can Grow

A strength is not only something that feels easy. It can also be a skill you have built through effort. If you become better at presenting because you practise, that growth is evidence. If you learn to organise a group project after making mistakes, that is evidence too.

Use the idea of a growth mindset carefully: effort matters, but effective strategies, feedback, practice, resources, health, and support also matter. You do not have to be excellent at everything. A strong skill profile usually combines areas you enjoy with areas you have deliberately developed.


Explore the World of Work


Career Fields and Career Pathways

A career field groups related kinds of work. Examples include health, engineering, construction, education, arts and media, business, public service, agriculture, hospitality, information technology, science, and skilled trades. A career pathway is a possible route through learning and experience toward roles in a field.

Do not judge a field by one famous job. Health includes far more than doctors. Technology includes far more than programmers. Construction includes planning, design, skilled trades, safety, logistics, and project management. Creative work appears in science and engineering, while mathematical thinking appears in music, business, design, and sport.

The video above offers one example of exploring an industry rather than focusing on a single job. When you research any field, ask about the variety of roles, daily tasks, working conditions, education routes, tools, people served, and skills used.


A Five-Step Exploration Cycle

Career exploration works well as a cycle rather than a one-time decision.

Stage What you do Useful question
Know yourself Gather evidence about interests, strengths, values, and preferences. What kinds of problems or activities keep my attention?
Discover Find unfamiliar jobs, fields, and pathways. What possibilities have I not considered yet?
Investigate Compare trustworthy information from several sources. What do people actually do, and how do they prepare?
Experience Try a safe mini-project, interview, visit, simulation, club, or job-shadowing activity. What does this work feel like in practice?
Reflect and plan Update your ideas and choose a next learning step. What did I learn, and what should I try next?

A career fair, workplace visit, interview with an adult, or classroom guest speaker can make career information more concrete. Before such an activity, prepare questions that cannot be answered by a simple web search. For example: "What part of your work is harder than people expect?" or "Which school skill do you use in a surprising way?"


Research Careers Like a Detective

Reliable career research compares multiple sources. A company page may explain one employer, but it may also be written to attract applicants. A social-media video may be engaging, but it may show only an unusual day. A government labour-market source can provide broader data, but averages may not describe your local area. An interview gives real experience, but one person's story is not everyone's story.

Use this checking routine:

For job requirements, wages, qualifications, and employment outlooks, use official or well-established sources for your country whenever possible. Treat exact predictions about distant future jobs with caution because technology, economics, policy, and society can change.


Future Skills


What Makes a Skill Transferable?

A transferable skill can be useful in many subjects, projects, jobs, and life situations. Communication, collaboration, problem-solving, planning, and adaptability are examples. A technical skill is more closely connected to particular tools or tasks, such as using a spreadsheet formula, operating workshop equipment, editing audio, or writing code.

Both types matter. They also overlap. A robotics project may require technical knowledge, but the team still needs to communicate, divide tasks, test ideas, solve problems, and learn from mistakes.

Transferable skills become stronger when you can show evidence of using them. Instead of saying "I am a good team member," describe what you did: "I summarised our ideas, noticed two tasks were missing, and helped the group agree on responsibilities."


Important Human Skills

The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, based on a large employer survey, identifies analytical thinking as a leading core skill and also emphasises resilience, flexibility, leadership, collaboration, creativity, and lifelong learning.[3] This does not mean every student needs the same skill profile. It means many changing workplaces value people who can think, learn, cooperate, and adapt.

Critical thinking means examining information and reasons before accepting a conclusion. In career exploration, critical thinking helps you question claims such as "this job will disappear," "that career is only for one type of person," or "you must study one specific subject to succeed." Ask what evidence supports the claim and what important details may be missing.

Problem-solving means defining a challenge, generating possible responses, testing ideas, and learning from the result. Real problems are not always neat. A useful solver can change approach when new information appears.

Creativity means producing useful or meaningful ideas, connections, designs, or expressions. It is not limited to art. Engineers, teachers, entrepreneurs, scientists, technicians, healthcare workers, and many others use creativity.

Adaptability means responding constructively when tools, tasks, teams, or circumstances change. Adaptability is not passive acceptance. It includes asking questions, learning new methods, and making thoughtful adjustments.


Communication and Collaboration

Communication includes listening, speaking, writing, presenting, asking questions, giving feedback, and choosing the right form for the audience. Good communication is not the same as talking a lot. Clear listening can be just as important as clear speaking.

Collaboration means working with other people toward a shared goal. Strong teams do not require everyone to think alike. They benefit when people explain disagreements respectfully, divide work fairly, keep promises, and combine different strengths.

A practical teamwork habit is to finish a meeting with three questions: What did we decide? Who will do each task? When will we check progress?


Digital, Data, and AI Literacy

Technology changes the tools people use and sometimes changes entire tasks. The 2025 World Economic Forum report identifies AI and big data, networks and cybersecurity, and technology literacy among rapidly growing skill areas.[4] UNESCO also highlights digital, entrepreneurial, and green skills as important for changing work and society.[5]

For Grades 7–8, digital readiness does not mean becoming an expert in every tool. Useful foundations include:

Data literacy Read tables and charts, question how data were collected, and explain what the data do and do not show.
AI literacy Understand that AI systems can produce useful outputs and also make errors, reflect bias, or invent information.
Cybersecurity awareness Use strong account practices, protect personal information, and recognise common scams.
Digital creation Make something useful with technology, such as a presentation, model, program, audio report, design, or data display.

When using generative AI for career exploration, never treat its answer as final evidence. Verify important facts with reliable sources. Do not share sensitive personal information. Ask the tool to explain uncertainty, and compare its suggestions with information from real people and trusted organisations.


Curiosity and Lifelong Learning

No course can prepare you once and forever for every future tool or job. Lifelong learning means continuing to build knowledge and skills throughout life. Curiosity supports this habit because curious people ask how systems work, why a problem exists, what they could improve, and what they still need to learn.

A useful question is not only "What job do I want?" but also "What kinds of problems do I want to become better at solving?"


Education and Training Pathways

Different careers can require different forms of preparation. Depending on your country, later pathways may include upper-secondary school, vocational education, apprenticeships, college, university, industry training, short courses, supervised practice, or combinations of these.

Vocational education can connect learning with practical and technical work. Academic routes can build subject knowledge and research skills. Apprenticeship-style learning can combine structured training with workplace experience. None of these labels automatically means "easy" or "hard." The best comparison is based on the requirements of a field, the quality of the programme, your learning needs, and the opportunities available in your location.

Do not assume that one career has only one route. When researching a role, find at least two possible education or training pathways if they exist. Then compare entry requirements, time, cost, learning style, qualifications, and future options.


Building a Skill Portfolio

A portfolio is a collection of evidence showing what you have learned or created. For a student, it can include project photos, writing samples, presentations, certificates, reflections, code, designs, experiment notes, feedback, or records of community activities.

Your portfolio does not need to look professional yet. Its purpose is to help you notice growth. For each item, add a short note answering three questions: What was the challenge? What did I contribute? What would I improve next time?

You can also build a skill map. Place a skill such as communication in the centre, then connect it to evidence from English, science, sport, music, clubs, home responsibilities, volunteering, or personal projects. This helps you see that skills can transfer between contexts.


Fair and Open Career Exploration

Career choices can be influenced by stereotypes about gender, culture, disability, family income, school marks, or social status. OECD research shows that teenage career expectations are strongly shaped by social background and are often concentrated in a limited range of occupations.[6]

Good career exploration expands possibilities rather than narrowing them too early. Ask whether you have seen diverse role models in a field. Investigate accessible pathways and support. Separate a current skill gap from a permanent judgement about ability. If a career interests you, find out what preparation is actually required before deciding it is "not for people like me."

Respect also matters when interviewing workers. Ask permission before recording. Do not pressure anyone to share salary, health, family, or other private information. Thank people for their time and represent their answers accurately.


Make a Flexible Career Action Plan

A strong plan for Grades 7–8 should focus on the next useful steps, not on predicting your entire life. Choose one or two career fields to investigate, one skill to practise, one person or source to learn from, and one experience to try.

A flexible action plan can use this structure:

Changing your plan after learning something new is not failure. It is evidence that exploration is working.
