Introduction
Colour, Light, and Composition are three powerful parts of visual communication. Whenever you make a photograph, poster, painting, comic panel, video shot, presentation, or web graphic, you make choices about what colours appear, how light reveals the subject, and where visual elements are placed. These choices affect what the viewer notices first, what mood the image creates, and how clearly the message is understood.

Colour
Colour begins with light
You see colour when light reaches your eyes and your visual system interprets the signals. A surface may absorb some wavelengths of visible light and reflect others. The reflected light that reaches your eyes contributes to the colour you perceive. Colour is therefore not only a property of an object: it depends on the light source, the surface, your eyes and brain, and the surrounding visual context.
Most people have three types of cone photoreceptors with overlapping sensitivity ranges. Your brain compares their signals to help create colour perception. This is why human colour vision can respond to many mixtures of light even though there are only three main cone types.
White light can contain a broad range of visible wavelengths. A prism can separate them because different wavelengths are refracted by different amounts. This process is called dispersion. The visible spectrum is continuous; familiar names such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet are useful labels for regions within it.


Additive and subtractive mixing
Additive colour mixing happens when coloured light is combined. Screens commonly use red, green, and blue light, often shortened to RGB. Adding different amounts of these lights can create a wide range of colours. When suitable red, green, and blue light are combined at high intensity, the result can appear white.

Subtractive colour mixing happens when materials such as inks, paints, or filters absorb parts of incoming light. Printing commonly uses cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, shortened to CMYK. In many art classrooms you may also meet the traditional red-yellow-blue colour wheel. That model is useful for organising artistic colour relationships, but it is not the same system used by digital screens or professional colour printing.

Hue, value, and saturation
Three useful words help you describe colour accurately. Hue means the colour family, such as red, green, or blue. Value describes how light or dark a colour appears. Saturation describes how intense or muted a colour appears. A highly saturated colour looks vivid, while a less saturated version appears more greyed or subdued.
Artists and designers use these properties to create contrast. Strong value contrast can make text easier to read or draw attention to a focal point. A bright saturated subject against a muted background can stand out strongly. A composition with similar values and low saturation may feel softer or quieter.

Colour relationships and meaning
A colour wheel helps you compare hues. Complementary colours sit opposite each other on a given colour wheel and can create strong hue contrast. Analogous colours sit near one another and often create a more connected colour family. A monochromatic scheme develops variations of one main hue by changing value and saturation.
Warm and cool colour descriptions can also help you discuss visual mood. Reds, oranges, and yellows are often described as warm, while blues and many blue-greens are often described as cool. These labels are relative and contextual rather than fixed emotional rules.
Colour meanings are not universal. The same colour can suggest celebration, danger, calm, mourning, nature, technology, or a brand identity depending on culture and context. When you analyse colour, avoid claiming that a hue always has one meaning. Instead, connect your interpretation to evidence from the image and its purpose.
Good visual communication also considers accessibility. Important information should not depend on colour alone, because viewers may have different forms of colour vision. Clear labels, shapes, patterns, and sufficient light-dark contrast can make designs easier to understand.
Light
Reflection, absorption, and transmission
Light can interact with materials in several ways. It may be reflected from a surface, absorbed by the material, or transmitted through it. Many real materials do more than one of these at the same time. A shiny surface can produce stronger directional reflections, while a rough surface tends to scatter reflected light in many directions.
Transparent materials transmit much visible light, translucent materials transmit light while scattering it, and opaque materials transmit very little visible light. These differences affect the appearance of windows, fabrics, paper, skin, glass, water, and many other subjects.
Direction, intensity, and quality
When you light a subject, ask three practical questions: Where is the light coming from? How bright is it? Are the shadows hard-edged or soft-edged?
Front light can make details easy to see but may reduce visible texture. Side light can emphasise texture and form through light and shadow. Backlight comes from behind the subject and can create glowing edges or silhouettes. Moving a light source changes the pattern of highlights and shadows, so lighting also changes composition.
A small or distant light source often produces harder, more clearly edged shadows. A larger or more diffused source usually produces softer shadow edges. Soft light is not automatically better; the useful choice depends on your intention.
Three-point lighting
Three-point lighting is a common starting system in photography, film, interviews, and stage work. The key light is the main source shaping the subject. The fill light reduces some shadows made by the key light. The backlight or rim light comes from behind and can help separate the subject from the background. This is a flexible method, not a rule that every image must follow.


Light, mood, and safety
Lighting influences atmosphere because it changes contrast, shadow, visibility, and colour appearance. Bright, even illumination can communicate clarity. Strong side light can feel dramatic because it increases light-dark differences. Backlighting can simplify a figure into a silhouette. Coloured light can change the apparent colour relationships in a scene.
For classroom experiments, use safe low-power sources such as ordinary LED torches or lamps. Never stare at the Sun, point lasers or powerful lights into anyone's eyes, or use damaged electrical equipment. Safe observation is part of good scientific and artistic practice.
Composition
Organising the frame
Composition is the arrangement of visual elements within an image or frame. It helps control attention, balance, movement, relationships, and storytelling. A strong composition does not simply follow a formula; it makes choices that support a purpose.
A focal point is an area intended to attract attention. Visual hierarchy describes the order in which elements attract attention. Positive space is occupied by subjects or shapes, while negative space is the space around and between them. Both can be active parts of a design.
Symmetrical balance can feel stable and formal. Asymmetrical balance uses unequal elements that still feel visually balanced. Repetition can create rhythm, while changes in scale can show importance or depth.
The rule of thirds
The rule of thirds is a widely used composition guideline. Imagine dividing the frame into nine equal areas with two horizontal and two vertical lines. A subject placed near one of the lines or intersections can create an off-centre composition with space for movement, context, or direction.

The rule of thirds is not a law. A centred composition may be more effective for symmetry, confrontation, calm, or a formal portrait. What matters is whether the placement supports your intention.
Leading lines, framing, and depth
Leading lines are visible or implied lines that guide the viewer's eye through an image. Roads, fences, shadows, building edges, arms, or repeated shapes can create a visual path. The strongest use of leading lines connects that path to a subject or meaningful destination.

Framing uses elements within the scene, such as doors, windows, branches, or arches, to surround or emphasise a subject. A sense of depth can be strengthened by including foreground, middle-ground, and background elements, by overlapping shapes, or by changing scale.
Viewpoint also matters. A high viewpoint, low viewpoint, close-up, wide shot, or unusual angle can change the relationships between objects and can change how powerful, distant, vulnerable, or important a subject appears.
Cropping, edges, and aspect ratio
The edges of an image are active choices. Cropping can remove distractions, increase emphasis, or change the relationship between a subject and its surroundings. Awkward cuts through hands, feet, signs, or important objects can look accidental, while deliberate close crops can create energy or intimacy.
The aspect ratio is the relationship between image width and height. A square frame, portrait frame, and wide landscape frame encourage different arrangements. When an image is resized for a poster, phone screen, video, or social platform, its composition may need to be redesigned rather than simply squeezed into a new shape.
How Colour, Light, and Composition Work Together
The three ideas are strongest when you combine them. Imagine a person in a red jacket standing in a cool, muted street scene. If side light makes the jacket bright and the face visible, while leading lines point toward the person and the subject is placed off-centre, colour contrast, lighting, and composition all support the same focal point.
Now imagine the same person centred in the frame, lit from behind as a silhouette, with little colour contrast. The meaning changes even though the subject is the same. Visual communication comes from relationships between choices, not from one isolated technique.
A useful design habit is to ask: What should the viewer notice first? What should they feel or understand? Which colour, lighting, and composition choices help create that result? If a choice does not support the intention, revise it.
Planning and Critiquing an Image
When you analyse your own work or someone else's, move from observation to explanation. First, describe what is visible without judging it. Next, name relevant techniques such as value contrast, side light, symmetry, negative space, or leading lines. Then explain how those choices guide attention or create an effect. Finally, evaluate whether that effect supports the purpose and suggest a specific revision.
In English lessons and media discussions, precise visual vocabulary strengthens your argument. Instead of writing "the picture looks good", you can write: The high value contrast makes the title the focal point, while the empty space around it keeps the layout easy to read. Useful connecting words include because, therefore, however, whereas, and while.
