Introduction

Urbanisation is the process in which a growing share of people live in urban areas such as towns and cities. It changes where people live, how land is used, how people travel, and how services are organised. Urbanisation is a major topic in Human geography because it connects population, migration, jobs, housing, transport, inequality, and the environment.

In this aiMOOC, you will learn how and why cities grow, how urbanisation can create both opportunities and challenges, and how planners can make cities more sustainable and fair. You will also practise reading evidence, comparing places, explaining causes and effects, and designing solutions.

The chart above shows a long-term change in the number of people living in urban and rural areas. When you read a graph like this, check the dates, units, data source, and definition of urban. Different countries and organisations may use different definitions, so exact totals can vary.


What Is Urbanisation?

An urban area is a built-up settlement where many people live close together and where jobs and services are often concentrated. A rural area usually has a lower population density and more open land. The boundary between urban and rural is not identical in every country.

Urbanisation does not simply mean that a city becomes larger. It means that the share of a population living in urban areas increases. A country can urbanise because people move from rural areas to cities, because the urban population grows through births, or because settlements expand and are reclassified as urban.

A megacity is commonly defined as an urban area with at least ten million inhabitants. Megacities attract attention because of their scale, but most urban residents do not necessarily live in the world's very largest cities.

Why Do Cities Grow?

One cause is rural-to-urban migration. People may leave rural areas because of push factors, such as limited employment, poor access to services, drought, conflict, or lack of educational opportunities. They may be attracted by pull factors, such as jobs, universities, hospitals, transport connections, or the hope of a higher income.

Another cause is natural increase. If births in an urban population outnumber deaths, the city can grow even without migration. Cities can also expand outward and absorb nearby settlements, which can change how the area is counted in statistics.

Migration decisions are rarely caused by one factor alone. A family may move because several economic, social, environmental, and personal reasons combine.

Urban Patterns and Scale

Urbanisation is uneven. Some regions urbanised early during industrialisation, while many cities in Africa and Asia are now experiencing rapid change. The rate of growth also differs between large cities, smaller cities, towns, and suburbs.

Lagos in Nigeria is a useful example of a very large and rapidly changing urban area. Its skyline, residential districts, markets, ports, roads, workplaces, and waterfront communities show that one city can contain many different land uses and living conditions.

When comparing cities, use more than one measure. Population size tells you how many people live there, population density tells you how closely people are concentrated, and urban land area tells you how much space the settlement covers.


Opportunities Created by Urbanisation

Cities can bring people, businesses, services, and ideas close together. This can create large labour markets, specialised jobs, universities, hospitals, cultural institutions, and efficient public services. Dense settlement can also make mass transit and shared infrastructure more practical.

Urbanisation can support economic growth and innovation when people can reach jobs, education, markets, and services. However, these benefits are not shared equally. A city can contain great wealth and serious poverty at the same time.

A useful question is therefore not simply, "Is urbanisation good or bad?" A stronger geographical question is, "Who benefits, who faces costs, where, and why?"


Challenges of Rapid Urban Growth

If housing, roads, drainage, schools, water systems, electricity, waste collection, and public transport do not expand quickly enough, residents may face overcrowding or poor access to basic services. Traffic congestion and air pollution can reduce quality of life. Rapid building can also remove green space or increase flood risk.

Informal settlements develop when people build or occupy housing outside some formal planning, land, or building systems. Conditions vary greatly. Some informal communities have strong local businesses and social networks, while residents may also face insecure land tenure, overcrowding, flood exposure, or limited access to water and sanitation.

Makoko, a waterfront community in Lagos, can be studied to explore questions about housing, livelihoods, inequality, water, transport, and access to services. Avoid treating residents as a single group: urban communities are diverse, and people experience both opportunities and risks.

Another challenge is urban sprawl, the outward spread of low-density development over a large area. Sprawl can increase travel distances, car dependence, infrastructure costs, and the loss of open land.

Case Study: Lagos

Lagos is one of Africa's major economic centres and an important port city. Its growth is connected with jobs, trade, services, migration, and natural increase. Rapid expansion has also created pressure on housing, transport, drainage, waste management, and other infrastructure.

Transport is an important part of the city's response. Lagos has developed bus rapid transit, usually shortened to BRT, as part of efforts to move large numbers of passengers more efficiently. BRT systems generally use high-capacity buses together with priority routes, stations, and organised services.

For geographers, Lagos is valuable because it shows both sides of urbanisation: economic opportunity and cultural energy alongside congestion, inequality, housing pressure, and environmental risk.


Case Study: Curitiba

Curitiba in Brazil is widely studied for linking urban planning with public transport. From the later twentieth century onward, planners guided development along transport corridors and built a bus rapid transit network. The aim was to connect land use and mobility rather than allow growth to depend only on private cars.

Curitiba does not offer a perfect solution for every city. Its value as a case study is that it shows how planning choices can shape travel behaviour, development patterns, and access to the city. When transferring an idea from one place to another, planners must consider local population, income, government, geography, and existing infrastructure.


Building More Sustainable Cities

A sustainable city aims to meet people's needs while reducing environmental damage and preparing for future risks. Useful strategies include reliable public transport, safe walking and cycling routes, energy-efficient buildings, affordable housing, mixed land use, good waste systems, urban trees, parks, wetlands, and climate-resilient drainage.

Compact development can shorten some journeys, while public transport can move many people using less road space per passenger than private cars. Green spaces can provide shade, recreation, habitats, and places for rainwater to soak into the ground.

A green roof, such as the one shown above on Chicago City Hall, is one example of green infrastructure. Green roofs can help manage rainwater, add vegetation, and reduce heat around buildings.

The BBC Ideas video presents the 15-minute city concept, in which everyday needs are planned within a short walk or cycle for many residents. Treat it as one planning idea to evaluate rather than a single solution for every city.


Reading Urban Evidence Like a Geographer

Good geographical explanations use evidence and recognise uncertainty. Before accepting a claim about the "largest" or "fastest-growing" city, ask what boundary was used, what year the data describe, and whether the figure measures a municipality, a built-up area, or a wider metropolitan region.

Maps and photographs also need careful reading. A photograph shows one place at one moment; it cannot represent an entire city. A map may highlight some features while leaving others out. Combine maps, statistics, photographs, field observations, and residents' perspectives whenever possible.
