Population Distribution
Introduction
Population Distribution is the pattern of where people live across an area. People are not spread evenly across Earth. Some places contain large settlements and many people close together, while other places have very few permanent residents. In this aiMOOC, you will learn how geographers describe these patterns, calculate population density, explain why settlement patterns form, and use maps and data to make decisions.
This course is designed for Grades 7–8. By the end, you should be able to distinguish distribution from density, recognize clustered and dispersed settlement patterns, explain physical and human factors that affect where people live, interpret several types of population maps, and connect population patterns to planning questions such as transport, housing, schools, water, and environmental protection.

Look carefully at the world map. The strongest pattern is not that one continent is simply "crowded" and another is "empty." Population is concentrated in particular regions, river valleys, coasts, plains, transport corridors, and urban areas. A good geographer therefore asks: Where are people concentrated, where are they sparse, and why?
Core Ideas
Distribution and Density Are Different
Population distribution describes the spatial pattern of where people live. A distribution may be concentrated in a few places, spread across a region, or arranged along a feature such as a river, road, or coast.
Population density is a numerical measure. It compares the number of people with the size of an area:
Population density = population ÷ land area
Density is often expressed as people per square kilometre. For example, a fictional district with 60,000 people living on 120 square kilometres has a density of 500 people per square kilometre. This number is an average. It does not mean every square kilometre contains exactly 500 people.
A country can have a moderate average density while most of its people live in only a few cities or valleys. This is why geographers study both density and distribution.
Common Settlement Patterns
Geographers often describe simple population patterns with three useful words:
- Clustered: People or buildings are grouped closely together, often around jobs, services, transport links, or water.
- Dispersed: People or buildings are spread farther apart, which is common in some farming and remote rural areas.
- Linear: People or buildings form a line or narrow band, often following a road, river, valley, or coastline.
Real places can contain more than one pattern. A region may have a large city cluster, smaller linear settlements along roads, and dispersed farms between them.
Why Do People Live Where They Do?
Population distribution results from many factors working together. A single factor rarely explains an entire region.
Physical Factors
Water is essential for drinking, farming, industry, and transport. Rivers, lakes, groundwater, and reliable rainfall can make settlement easier.
Relief and terrain matter because broad plains and gentle slopes are often easier for building, farming, and transport than steep mountains.
Climate affects comfort, agriculture, water supply, and risks. Extremely cold, dry, or very high environments usually support fewer people than many temperate or well-watered areas.
Soils and vegetation can affect farming and access. Fertile soils may support dense rural populations, while thick forests or poor soils can make some forms of settlement more difficult.
Natural resources such as minerals, energy sources, forests, or good fishing grounds can attract workers and settlements. Resources can also lose importance when technologies and economies change.
Natural hazards influence settlement choices, but hazards do not automatically prevent dense settlement. People may remain in risky areas because of jobs, family ties, fertile land, transport access, or cultural importance.

The Nile Valley and Delta are a strong example of how water and fertile land can shape settlement in a much drier surrounding region. When you study an image like this, connect physical geography with human activities instead of assuming that nature alone determines where people live.
Human Factors
Jobs and economic opportunities attract people to industrial areas, business centres, ports, tourist regions, and service hubs.
Transport and connectivity matter because roads, railways, ports, airports, and digital networks link people with markets, schools, workplaces, and services.
Public services such as hospitals, schools, clean water, electricity, and reliable communications can make places more attractive and support larger populations.
History and culture influence where settlements began and why people stay. Historic trade routes, religious centres, capitals, family networks, and land-use traditions can shape modern patterns.
Government decisions and political conditions can influence settlement through borders, housing policy, planned cities, infrastructure investment, land rules, or safety and stability.
Technology can reduce some environmental limits. Irrigation, heating, cooling, engineering, and modern transport can support settlement in places that would otherwise be harder to inhabit.
Reading Global Population Patterns
At the global scale, high population concentrations are often found in major urban regions, fertile plains, river valleys, coastal zones, and long-established farming regions. Large concentrations occur in parts of South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and other major urbanized regions.
Sparsely populated areas are often found in extreme environments such as large deserts, high mountains, polar regions, and some remote forests. However, these are broad patterns rather than rules. Technology, resources, history, government policy, and transport can produce important exceptions.

A cartogram changes the size or shape of areas to represent a variable. In this population cartogram, places with more people appear larger than they would on a normal land-area map. Cartograms can make global population differences easier to notice, but they distort familiar geographic shapes.
A Useful Map-Reading Routine
When you read a population map, use this four-part routine:
- Read the key: Identify what colours, dots, symbols, or shapes mean.
- Check the scale: Decide whether you are studying a neighbourhood, country, continent, or the world.
- Describe the pattern: Identify clusters, sparse areas, lines, contrasts, and exceptions.
- Explain carefully: Use evidence and several physical or human factors instead of guessing from one cause.
Population Maps and Their Limits
Different maps answer different questions.
A choropleth map shades administrative areas according to a value such as average density. It is useful for comparison, but a single colour can hide large differences inside one region.
A dot distribution map uses dots to represent a number of people or settlements. It can show clusters more clearly, but the dots may represent totals rather than exact household locations.
A population grid divides land into equal cells and estimates how many people live in each cell. Grid maps can reveal patterns that administrative boundaries hide.
A cartogram changes the visual size of places according to population or another variable. It emphasizes quantities but distorts normal shapes and distances.

Good map interpretation includes checking the date, the data source, the area unit, and the definition. Population data change over time, and different countries or organizations may define urban and rural areas differently.
Urban and Rural Population
An urban area usually has a higher concentration of people, buildings, services, and infrastructure than surrounding rural areas. A rural area usually has lower density and more open land, although definitions vary between countries.
Urbanization is the increasing concentration of people in settlements with urban characteristics. It can happen through migration from rural areas, natural population change within cities, the physical expansion of settlements, or the reclassification of places as urban.

Cities can provide access to jobs, education, healthcare, public transport, and cultural life. Rapid growth can also create challenges if housing, water, sanitation, transport, green space, and other services do not expand quickly enough.
Cities as Population Clusters
Large cities and urban regions are major population clusters. They often grow where transport routes, markets, government functions, industry, services, or historic settlement have created strong connections.

A map of large urban areas is not the same as a population-density map. One shows the locations of large settlements; the other compares population with area. Using two map types together can reveal more than either one alone.
Migration and Changing Distribution
Migration changes population distribution when people move from one place to another. A person may move within a country or across an international border. Reasons can include work, education, family, safety, housing, environmental change, or personal goals.
Geographers often use the terms push factors and pull factors. A push factor makes leaving a place more likely, while a pull factor makes another place attractive. These ideas are useful, but real migration decisions are usually complex and may involve several reasons at once.
Population distribution also changes through births and deaths. A region can gain population without receiving migrants, and it can lose population even while some migrants arrive. To explain change well, you must consider more than one demographic process.
Population Distribution and Planning
Knowing where people live helps governments, communities, and businesses decide where facilities and services may be needed. Population information can guide decisions about schools, hospitals, public transport, housing, emergency planning, water systems, and internet access.
High density can support efficient public transport and nearby services, but it can also create pressure on housing or infrastructure if planning is weak. Low density can offer more space, but it may make roads, healthcare, public transport, or broadband more difficult and expensive to provide across long distances.
Population density by itself does not tell you whether a place is successful, healthy, wealthy, or sustainable. You need additional evidence about living conditions, resources, inequality, infrastructure, environmental effects, and access to services.
Working with Population Data
Suppose fictional Region A has 240,000 people and 600 square kilometres of land. Its average density is 400 people per square kilometre.
Suppose fictional Region B has 90,000 people and 150 square kilometres of land. Its average density is 600 people per square kilometre.
Region B has fewer people in total but a higher population density. This shows why total population and population density must not be confused.
When comparing real data, check whether the same units, dates, boundaries, and definitions are being used. A fair comparison requires compatible data.
Reliable Data Sources
For current population and urbanization data, geographers often use official census agencies and international statistical organizations. Useful starting points include the United Nations World Urbanization Prospects and the United Nations Statistics Division. Always record the data year because population patterns change.
