Introduction

Welcome to Grasslands and Savannas. This aiMOOC is designed for learners in Grades 5–6. You will explore wide open landscapes where grasses are the main plants, compare temperate grasslands with tropical savannas, discover how plants and animals survive, build simple food webs, and think about how people can protect these important ecosystems.

A grassland is an ecosystem in which grasses and other low plants are more common than trees. A savanna is a warm grassland or open woodland with a continuous grassy layer and scattered trees or shrubs. Grasslands and savannas are shaped by climate, soil, grazing animals, and fire. They can look simple from far away, but they contain many connected living things.

As you work through the course, ask yourself: Why do grasses grow so well here? How do animals find food and water? What happens when one part of the ecosystem changes?

By the end of this course, you should be able to explain the difference between a grassland and a savanna, identify important climate patterns, describe plant and animal adaptations, build a simple food web, explain the roles of grazing and fire, compare grasslands from different continents, and suggest ways to protect grassland biodiversity.


What Is a Grassland?

Grasslands are large areas where grasses are the dominant plants. Some grasslands have almost no trees. Others have a few shrubs or trees, especially near rivers. Trees may be limited because there is not enough rainfall for a dense forest, because fires remove young woody plants, or because grazing animals eat new shoots.

Grasslands can be found in many parts of the world. Temperate grasslands usually have warm or hot summers and cold winters. Different regions use different names for them. The prairie is associated with North America, the Pampas with South America, the steppe with much of Eurasia, and the veld with parts of southern Africa.

Not every grassland looks the same. A tallgrass prairie may have grasses higher than your knees, while a drier shortgrass area may have much shorter plants. Soil, rainfall, temperature, grazing, and fire all influence which plants can grow.


Temperate Grasslands

Temperate grasslands are found in regions with strong seasonal changes in temperature. Summers can be warm or hot, while winters can be cold. Rainfall is usually too limited or too seasonal for a thick forest to cover the whole landscape.

Many temperate grasslands have deep, fertile soils. Grasses add organic matter to the soil when roots and leaves die and decompose. This is one reason many former grasslands have been changed into farmland. Farming can provide food for people, but converting natural grassland can also reduce habitat for wild species.

Animals of temperate grasslands include grazers such as bison and antelope, burrowing animals such as prairie dogs, predators such as foxes and coyotes, and many insects and birds. Each species has a role in the ecosystem.


What Is a Savanna?

A savanna is a type of grass-dominated ecosystem in a warm region. It has an open tree layer, so sunlight can reach the grasses below. Savannas occur in Africa, South America, Australia, India, and other tropical or subtropical regions.

Savannas often have a clear wet season and dry season. During the wet season, plants grow quickly and water may be easy to find. During the dry season, water becomes scarce, grasses may turn brown, and animals may move to find food and water.

Trees in savannas are usually spaced far enough apart that they do not form a closed forest canopy. Some trees have small leaves, thick bark, deep roots, or other features that help them survive heat, drought, grazing, or fire.


Savanna Animals

The African savanna is famous for large animals such as zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, elephants, lions, hyenas, and many antelope species. However, savannas are also home to insects, birds, reptiles, small mammals, fungi, and tiny soil organisms.

Large herbivores often feed on different parts of plants. Zebras may graze on grasses, giraffes browse leaves higher in trees, and elephants can eat grasses, leaves, bark, and branches. These different feeding styles can reduce direct competition for the same food.

Predators depend on herbivores for food. Scavengers feed on dead animals, and decomposers break down dead matter and return nutrients to the soil. This shows why an ecosystem is a network rather than a simple list of species.


Climate, Rainfall, and Seasons

Climate describes the usual weather conditions of a place over a long time. Grasslands are often found where rainfall supports grasses but does not support a continuous dense forest. Savannas are warm and commonly have strongly seasonal rainfall.

The wet season can bring rapid plant growth, new leaves, insects, and temporary pools. The dry season can bring food shortages, dry grasses, and long journeys to water. Some animals time births or migrations so that young animals have better access to food.

The exact amount of rainfall differs greatly among grasslands. Instead of memorizing one number, focus on the pattern: grasslands receive enough water for grasses, but conditions often make continuous forest growth difficult.


Fire and Grazing

Fire can be dangerous, but in many natural grasslands and savannas it is also part of the ecosystem. Lightning can start wildfires, and people may use carefully managed prescribed fires in some areas. Many grasses can regrow because important growth tissue and roots remain at or below the soil surface.

Fire can remove dead plant material and slow the spread of woody plants. Grazing animals also shape grasslands by eating plants, trampling vegetation, moving seeds, and adding nutrients through waste. If grazing is too intense, however, plants and soil can be damaged.

A healthy grassland is not simply a place with "lots of grass." It is a changing system in which plants, animals, weather, soil, water, and disturbance interact.


Adaptations for Grassland Life

An adaptation is a feature or behavior that helps an organism survive and reproduce in its environment.

Plant adaptations can include deep or spreading roots, narrow leaves that reduce water loss, growth points near the ground, and the ability to regrow after grazing or fire. Some savanna trees have thick bark or roots that reach deep water.

Animal adaptations can include speed for moving across open ground, camouflage, herd behavior, burrowing, seasonal migration, and feeding structures suited to grasses or leaves. A zebra's strong teeth help it graze, while a giraffe's long neck helps it reach leaves above many other herbivores.

Adaptations do not make organisms "perfect." They are traits that work well enough in particular conditions. If conditions change quickly, a helpful adaptation may become less useful.


Food Chains and Food Webs

Every ecosystem needs a flow of energy. Most food chains begin with the Sun. Green plants use sunlight to make food through photosynthesis. Because plants make their own food, they are called producers.

A grassland food chain might be: grass → grasshopper → bird → hawk. A savanna food chain might be: grass → zebra → lion. Real ecosystems are more complicated because most organisms eat or are eaten by more than one species. Many connected food chains form a food web.

Herbivores eat plants. Carnivores eat other animals. Omnivores eat both plant and animal material. Decomposers such as many fungi and bacteria break down dead material and recycle nutrients.

If one species becomes rare, other parts of the food web may change. For example, fewer herbivores can mean more plant growth in some places, while fewer predators can allow some herbivore populations to increase.


Movement and Migration

Many grassland animals move because food and water change with the seasons. Migration is regular movement from one region to another, often followed by a return journey.

In East Africa, huge numbers of wildebeest move across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem while following seasonal resources. Zebras and other animals may move as well. Migration is not random wandering: it is connected to rainfall, fresh grass, water, breeding, and survival.

Movement can also happen on a smaller scale. Bison may move to new grazing areas, birds may travel between seasonal habitats, and burrowing animals may spend the hottest or coldest parts of the day underground.


Grasslands Around the World

Grasslands occur on several continents, but they do not all contain the same species.

The names in this table describe broad regions, not identical ecosystems. Local grasslands can differ greatly in rainfall, soil, elevation, fire patterns, and species.


People and Grasslands

People have lived in grassland and savanna regions for thousands of years. Grasslands support farming, livestock grazing, tourism, cultural traditions, and many local livelihoods. They also provide ecosystem services such as storing carbon in soils, supporting pollinators, reducing erosion when vegetation is healthy, and providing habitat for wildlife.

Human activities can also create problems. Natural grasslands may be plowed for crops, divided by roads and fences, overgrazed, or changed by invasive species. Climate change can alter temperature and rainfall patterns, creating new challenges for plants, animals, and people.

The goal is not to keep people completely separate from grasslands. The challenge is to use land in ways that allow both human communities and ecosystems to remain healthy.


Conservation and Restoration

Conservation means protecting nature and using resources responsibly. Ecological restoration means helping a damaged ecosystem recover.

Grassland conservation can include protecting large habitat areas, keeping wildlife migration routes open, controlling invasive species, using grazing carefully, restoring native plants, and using prescribed fire only when trained experts decide it is appropriate.

You can help by learning which grassland species live in your region, supporting native plants, avoiding the spread of invasive species, reducing litter, respecting protected areas, and sharing accurate information about why grasslands matter.


Think Like an Ecologist

An ecologist studies relationships among living things and their environment. Instead of asking only "What animal is this?", an ecologist also asks: What does it eat? What eats it? Where does it find water? How does it affect plants? What happens if rainfall changes?

Try this example: imagine a grassland where the number of grazing animals suddenly drops. There may be more tall grass at first. That could change fire behavior, shelter for small animals, and food for predators. One change can lead to several connected effects.
