English: Possibly a wrought iron socketed sickle fragment dating from the Earliest Iron Age, that is c. 800-600BC. It would have been part of the Early Iron Age Llyn Fawr metalwork assemblage and contemporary with early iron spearheads, wrought iron socketed axes, copper-alloy socketed axes of Sompting and related types and Hallstatt razors.The fragment is very worn and the surface on both obverse and reverse is pitted and flaky and in need of conservation. The edges of the blade are jagged and the original line is difficult to ascertain. The artefact has a strong midrib along its entire length (see image). If this fragment comes from an Early Iron Age socketed iron sickle it would be a very important find. Only one other iron socketed sickle has been recorded from Britain, that is the sickle that is part of the eponymous Llyn Fawr hoard (Rhigos, Glamorgan). It was found in a mountain lake with two large B1 cauldrons, six rib-and-pellet decorated socketed axes of transitional and Sompting Type (Variant Cardiff II), one socketed chisel, two cast copper-alloy socketed sickles, one wrought iron spearhead, a wrought iron sword of Type Mindelheim, a Hallstatt razor, a yoke mount, a belt hook, two harness cheek pieces and three socketed gauges. This is the most important Earliest Iron Age assemblage in Britain and only one of the three or four hoard that included both bronze and iron artefacts.
