Suppose a text explains why bees are important. Information about pollination and food production is probably important. The colour of one beekeeper's gloves is probably minor.

Use the following method whenever you summarise a text.

Read the whole text once without writing the summary. Look at the title, headings, pictures, captions, and repeated words. If a word is unfamiliar, use the surrounding sentence or a dictionary to work out its meaning.
