Asia is the world's largest continent by land area. Because the border between Asia and Europe is partly based on history and convention, different maps and textbooks may count Asian countries in slightly different ways. This course uses the United Nations M49 regional grouping as its main classroom guide. For classroom use, this course turns the UN M49 Asia grouping into a 48-country list: 47 UN member states plus the State of Palestine, a UN non-member observer state. = Why Do Country Lists Differ? =

Geographers use agreed rules, but continent boundaries are not always as simple as coastlines. Europe and Asia form one large landmass called [[English:Eurasia|Eurasia]], so the boundary between them is partly conventional. Countries such as Türkiye and Kazakhstan have territory connected with both Europe and Asia.

The United Nations M49 statistical system places Russia in Europe and Egypt in Africa. This course follows that system for its main 48-country learning list. Other atlases may show Russia as partly Asian because a very large part of its land lies east of the Ural Mountains. Hong Kong and Macao are special administrative regions of China, not separate sovereign countries in this course. Taiwan is shown separately on many maps, but its political status is disputed and it is not listed as a separate country in the UN M49 system.

For Grades 5–6, the most important skill is not arguing about one "perfect" list. It is learning to read the legend, check what system a map uses, and explain why two reliable maps might organize places differently.
