E8 G - Stress the important information
Mini-description: Use sentence stress to make the important information in a statement or opinion easy to hear. You will listen, notice, try, check and speak. The goal is clear communication — not a perfect accent.

Level: English, Klasse 8, G-Niveau, Baden-Württemberg.

BR
Einleitung
Media first. Watch only a short part first. Keep the captions off. Listen for one question:

Which word sounds strongest?

Try an answer before you read on.

Hint: A stressed word can sound a little stronger, longer or clearer. It can also have a noticeable pitch change.

German help if needed: Satzbetonung lenkt die Aufmerksamkeit auf wichtige Information. Du musst nicht jedes Wort gleich stark sprechen.

After this course, you can say:

# I can hear sentence stress in short, clear statements and opinions.
# I can stress an important word when I give information.
# I can give an opinion and a reason in connected sentences.
# I can listen twice and use a simple strategy.
# I can mark the focus word in a short script before I speak.
# I can check my own speaking and improve one point.

BR
Vorwissen
You already know many short opinion phrases:

I think ... because ...

In my view, ...

I agree because ...

I don't agree because ...

Now add one more skill: make the key information easy to hear.

Try this sentence:

I wanted the BLUE ticket.

What is important: the ticket, the colour, or the person?

Answer: The colour is in focus.

BR
Sentence stress: the key idea
In spoken English, not every word is equally strong. Speakers often make important information more noticeable. This is called sentence stress or focus stress.

Compare:

MIA bought the tickets. → Mia, not another person.

Mia bought the TICKETS. → tickets, not something else.

Mia BOUGHT the tickets. → she bought them; she did not only look at them.

The words stay almost the same. The focus changes.

500px|rahmenlos|center

The picture shows that speech can be visualised as a waveform and a spectrogram. You do not need to read such diagrams. Just remember: speech changes in strength, length and pitch.

BR
A simple G-level rule
Do not try to stress many words at once.

One clear focus word is often enough for practice.

Use this learning route:

English first → context → try → ask → hint → German help if needed

Example:

I REALLY liked the ending because it was surprising.

Try it once.

Ask yourself: What is my important message?

Hint: stress the word that carries your main point.

Listening and Viewing
BR
Viewing 1: Notice the focus
Watch the video at the top again for a short section.

First viewing: no captions.

Your task:

# Write down one sentence in which you hear a clearly strong word.
# Underline the word you think is stressed.
# Say what the speaker wants to highlight.

Second viewing: use captions if you need them.

Direct feedback: If you only copied the words but cannot name the focus, listen again and ask: Which word sounds stronger or longer?

BR
Viewing 2: Stress can change meaning
Watch a short section about sentence stress.

First try: Listen without captions.

Choose one idea:

A stressed word can show new or important information.

Every word should be equally strong.

Stress only matters in very long speeches.

Check: The first idea is the useful one.

Then replay the section. Captions may now help.

BR
Listening strategy
Use this three-step strategy:

# First listen: What is the situation?
# Second listen: Which word sounds strongest?
# Check: What does that word tell you about the speaker's focus?

Do not stop for every unknown word. Listen for the message first.

BR
Reading: Find the important information
Read this short fictional exchange.

Leah: I think the school café needs MORE vegetarian food because many students ask for it.

Noah: I agree about the FOOD, but I think the café also needs longer opening hours.

Leah: That's true. For me, the main problem is still the CHOICE.

The capital words show possible focus words.

Now answer:

# What is Leah's first main point?
# What does Noah agree with?
# What is Leah's main problem at the end?

Help: Look around the stressed word. The whole sentence gives the meaning.

BR
Context vocabulary
{| class="wikitable"

Try the English meaning first. Use the German support only if you still need it:

focus = Schwerpunkt, stress = betonen, reason = Grund, contrast = Gegensatz.

BR
Pronunciation
500px|rahmenlos|center

The stress mark in phonetics shows that stress is part of spoken language. You do not need to write IPA in this course.

Use a simple classroom mark instead:

I need the RED folder.

or

I need the __red__ folder.

When you practise, make the focus word slightly stronger and clearer. Do not shout.

BR
Rhythm practice
Say each line twice.

I wanted the BLUE one.

I WANTED the blue one.

I wanted the blue ONE.

After each line, ask:

What changed?

Possible answer:

# BLUE → the colour matters.
# WANTED → the action or wish matters.
# ONE → this item matters.

Feedback: If all three versions sound the same, slow down and make only the focus word a little longer.

BR
Speaking
BR
Speak in connected ideas
Use two connected sentences:

I think our class trip should be SHORTER because the journey is tiring. We need more time at the place.

Stress one key word in the first sentence.

Then try a second opinion:

In my view, the START time is too early because many students travel by bus.

You do not need many sentence starters. Choose one and continue with your own idea.

BR
Pair task
Student A chooses one sentence:

We need a NEW poster.

We need a new POSTER.

WE need a new poster.

Student B listens and says what the focus probably is.

Then change roles.

Important: Different accents are welcome. The goal is understandability, not accent-free English.

BR
Writing
Write a short opinion text of 60–80 words.

Topic:

Should students have more project days at school?

Use this structure:

Opinion → reason → example → short ending

Before you read your text aloud, mark two or three focus words.

Example plan:

I think project days are USEFUL because we can work on one topic for longer. For example, a science project can include research and experiments. I would like MORE project days, but they should be well planned.

Do not copy the example. Write your own text.

BR
Writing feedback
Check your text:

# Is my opinion clear?
# Do I give at least one reason?
# Are my sentences connected?
# Did I mark only a few important focus words?
# Can I read it so that the important information is easy to hear?

BR
Mediation
Your German-speaking classmate asks what your English partner said.

English message:

I like the idea, but the PRICE is a problem because some students cannot pay that much.

Give the main message in simple German. Do not translate every word.

Then say the key point again in English with clear stress.

Goal: transfer the important information, not every single word.

BR
Grammar in context
At G-level, the main goal here is communication.

You may meet forms such as:

The event was planned by the class. → passive, mainly for understanding here.

They had finished the poster before lunch. → past perfect, mainly for understanding here.

For reported speech, you can use a simple form without backshift:

Leah says the price is too high.

You do not need to produce difficult passive or past-perfect structures in this course. Focus on meaning and sentence stress.
A focus word can sound a little { stronger }.
Changing the stressed word can change the { focus }.
On the first listening try, you listen for the main { message }.
A short opinion should include a reason with { because }.
If all words sound strong, choose one clear { focus word }.
For G-level work, difficult passive forms are mainly used for { understanding }.
